struggles with going to the gym

So here I sit with a gym membership at Anytime fitness that I NEVER use... I am not sure what it is but I just HATE going to the gym!! I will do work out videos, c25k running, walking, all that before I will go get my money's worth at the gym.
Anybody know of anything that got you started at using your gym? Any motivation techniques?
Also, what is your opinion on getting a personal trainer? Do they work? Do you feel you can push yourself just as hard as someone else? Worth the money? --Now I know Planet Fitness has "free" trainers with your monthly fee (are they worth it?) and also the trainers you pay an arm and a leg for an hour or so, are they worth it?
Thanks in advance

i go to planet fitness and have used the personal trainer, who is free with your membership. he is definitely worth it! i find that my motivation comes from within me... i have tried everything else, but if i don't force myself off the couch and out the door, i won't go. so... every other day, i have to force myself off the couch to go lift weights. the other days i do cardio in my living room
the gym has become my second home, but i have a slight issue... i want to use the free weights, but there are all these amazing looking men using them, so i just use the machines. i can't be up there huffing and puffing in front of those amazing looking men hehehe. i'm thinking of buying some free weights for home (for upper body) and only going to the gym to work my legs. we'll see.... but either way, it's important to go, and i have found planet fitness the best bargain for your money. their mantra is fantastic, the staff is all very polite and helpful, and the personal trainer is really worth it! good luck

Do you have a friend or partner that would be interested to go with you? I go with my bf and really don't think I'd go half as much if it weren't for him, I love the gym and would want to go but I hate being there on my own.
I've never tried a PT but I think it would be a good idea, especially if they're free. Personally I wouldn't pay loads for one but if it's included in your membership then why not give it a try and see if it helps0 -
Motivation is definitely intrinsic. Either you feel the drive to do it, or you don't. Personally, my internal self said, "there is no way in HELL you are wasting 3xx.xx dollars on a membership you don't use." (I prepaid up front for a year). That got me started. Then my hatred of working out melted away, and I *LOVE* to hit the gym. When I don't go, I lament over how I miss it.
You just have to have that drive from within. Otherwise, stop wasting the money. There are better things to do with the dollars you're wasting.0 -
I go to the gym because they have things I don't have at home. Sure, going to the gym is not necessary at all. I lost my first 100 pounds without ever stepping foot in the gym. I did only Workout DVDs. But now I have learned that my insurance company pays for the gym, so I only have to go 8 times a month.
Seeing as how you have the membership, you HAVE to use it. Go there and let the other people around you be your motivators. For instance, if you are on a treadmill and there is a person next to you, try to go faster or work harder than them. Once you get there and start moving, you will be glad you went. Why would you want to waste your money? Next time, do not renew and just stick to your own thing.0 -
I do better working out at home with m beach body DVD's driving to the gym is not at all motivating for me anymore, I used to have a really good trainer years ago that was helpful and she was worth the money 2x a week It depends on finding a good trainer0

I don't like going generally. They tend to be full of macho tossers posturing. I'm no weed, but I can't bear posers.0

My gym has fitness classes - and I am addicted to them. I am still not really comfortable in there with all the machines, because I hate the big mirror wall across from me
but I love love love my fitness classes

I think a trainer is worth it to initially learn how to strength train and use all the machines in the gym. It gets you more comfortable with being in the gym and performing different workouts. I personally dont find that a trainer will give you motivation...once the trianing is done, its up to you to maintain it. Motivation will always be something you have to find yourself.0
