I am struggling with getting so tired after I eat in the afternoon. I walk around and drink plenty of water....any advice?

This post is over a decade old. 😬

My afternoon slump comes when I’ve worked out really hard and undereaten. When I get The Naps for a couple of days in a row, I bump my calories up.

It’s my experience that my body is signaling severe under-fueling.

    Love a zombie thread.

For me it's if I have a sandwich or anything carb heavy. Have to save those for the evenings - otherwise I'm nodding at my desk half an hour later.

A lot of it is blood sugar issues if the tiredness is after eating. Normally associated with insulin resistance and diabetes, and most people have no idea they're progressing towards IR and this can be a telling sign. There's also the body's natural ability to produce serotonin from tryptophan found in protein and then the carbs that are eaten in that meal synthesizes the tryptophan in protein to serotonin which is a precursor to melatonin which regulated our sleep-awake cycle, anyway, it's basically hormonal, either way for the most part. Of course it could be fatigue from undereating and a few other situations as well.

Yep, this used to happen to me when I had sandwiches with regular bread and/or didn't get enough protein in relationships to carbs. If I up the protein and use sprouted bread (Dave's, Food for Life and Alvarado St. Bakery are some brands that make this) and get exercise at lunchtime, I don't get sleepy in the afternoon.

Overeating can also cause this - when we used to have Mandatory Saturdays at work, lunch was on the company. We'd all be in a food coma in the afternoon. Between figuring out what to eat, eating, and the food comas, it was a waste of time to bring us in

Lack of regular sleep also contributes to wanting to nap in the afternoon.
