Hey folks, looking for some ideas here on how to find a pool to train at. I'm planning to do a Triathalon next year and really need to improve my swimming before then. With the cold Wisconsin winter approaching, I need to find a pool that I can use for this purpose. Of course i could join the YMCA or a local health club (if any have a pool) but that's awful expensive just to use a pool. I have a workout facility at work so have no other need for a gym membership. So I'm just curious if you have any other creative thoughts on how I might be able to find a pool for this purpose that wouldn't come with a $40-60 a month price tag. If you've got any ideas, let me know.

Sometimes a local university will allow you to buy a membership just for the pool (and some high schools). I know there are restrictions on hours you can use it but that also restricts how much they will charge because they are happy to get what they can during non-practive hours. I know University of Delaware and some other colleges allow it so that's something to look into.

Do your local high schools have indoor pools?

I belong to Swim Masters, you could check into that but there is a membership fee and monthly dues. We have many triathletes in our group.

    Good luck!

Try local high schools or community colleges. Some of them have their pool open to community as well. The price usually much better than a gym. Good luck.

My daughter took lessons at a scuba shop. They have an indoor saltwater pool and they allowed people to come in at odd hours and use the pool for practice for a small fee. If you can find a place like that, maybe they will work something out with you. I live in a somewhat small town, but we have 2 of them. It would be worth a try.

Many hotels offer the use of their swimming pools (for a price).

As said previously, check with local high schools/colleges. I work for rec department at a college and we offer different levels of membership depending on what you want access to.

Also, check with local fitness clubs to see if they do the same type of thing... different memberships based on different levels of access.
  • Depending on how large your city is, you may find the municipal pool offers the best deal, since they are offering the pools for the benefit of their citizens, versus a for profit health club. I live in a suburb of Denver, and an annual membership runs $385 (32.08/month) for the city. We have access to various pools around the city; two indoor pools (long and short course) and three outdoor pools during the summer.

If you're training for a triathalon, you'll have access to like-minded athletes who can help with technique and training ideas if necessary, or just finding some training partners. This being Colorado, there are weekend warriors and some actual professional athletes you can share the water with.

Paying per visit runs $5.00 per workout, so it'll add up pretty quickly since you'll be in the water quite a bit ahead of your triathalon. Good luck!

Thanks for all the ideas guys, I will check into the. So far I did find out that the local high school has open swim 2 days a week for $2 each day. I have to find out if they have lanes or if it's just an open pool during that time but that would be an option. Unfortunately, the only municipal pools in the area are outdoor so that won't help me over the winter. But thanks again, I appreciate it.
