Yes but also no.
In my life, I (deliberately) lost in two rounds.
The first 7.5 kg I lost for good (about 11 years ago).
Then, some years after, I decided to lose other 7 kg, but these I regained.
But I understood the difference between these two losings: the first 7.5 I lost very slowly (in a year), and introducing only one little change, that since then I kept in my life without problems (I only made an habit of walking daily, that was a thing I already did and love, but was no consistent in).
The 7 kg more, instead, that is the lost but regained, I lost in the wrong way: I lost them by eating less and working out (both things I hate with all my heart). So, obviously I lost quickly (7 kg in 5 months instead of one year), but super obviously I couldn't stick for life (nor I would want! It was an horrible life!).
Now it's my third round, but it's different.
I started for health reasons: I've always eaten very healthy, but for too many sweet things. So, in the last 5 years my glucose was becoming too high.
So, I added even more vegetables (I already ate a lot), and this resulted in less hunger/craves, so I reduced sweets in a natural way, without effort (note: only reduced, absolutely not eliminated). And, also to reduce glucose in blood, I added more daily steps.
And, as obvious, these three things (more vegetables, less sugar, more walking) resulted not only in reduced glucose, but also in losing weight (about 10-11 kg), at a very slow and natural pace.
Now, since I know that I love walking, I love vegetables and I still have a lot of my adored sweet things (I still have my daily croissant for breakfast, my daily dark chocolate in the afternoon and 2/3 biscuits in the evening, and also my tiramisù on Saturday), I know that those are habits I'll stick forever. So, I hope these new 10-11 kg will stay away for good, as the first 7.5.8 -
I lost 60 pounds about 20 years ago. My dietician quit. I immediately gained 20 back before I said "Hey, wait a minute. I don't need her. She taught me what to do. I can do it for myself." I stopped the gain but didn't lose more until this year. Lost that 20, 25 more. 5 to 15 more to go?9

I have been up and down many times since I started using MFP in 2012. Currently I am down 35lbs since Oct and over 100lbs for the last 10 yrs. Stick to it or come back to it is the only advice I can give. The method works you just have to work it.10

When I was 49 years old I lost 60 lbs. in about 3 months. Was drinking a bunch of water daily, cut out breads, and was eating veggies from A-Z literally. Never hungry and once my metabolism got going I would lose 2-3 lbs. a week. Could even "cheat," but as long as it was just one cheat, and it could be a really big cheat, I would go back to healthy eating and still lose a couple of pounds that week. But at about 230 lbs. I plateaued, and after about a week started to gain what I had lost, but started back up at about half the rate that I had been losing. About 9 years later, I was labelled as Type 2 Diabetic and I started to lose again. But this time was more difficult as far as what I was eating. A bunch of veggies I wasn't supposed to eat any longer. Still lost 60 lbs. in about 3 months. But once again at about 230 lbs. I plateaued and started to gain again, gaining at about half the rate as I had been losing.
So have started to lose again, but this time am more attentive to how the food will affect my Blood Glucose Level. But, trying to lose weight, to lower Bgl & to lose weight. Down about 10 lbs. over about a month and a half, but I think I see that my Bgl resting stats are dropping in a positive direction. My Fitness Pal site helps me keep track, and plan my meals several days in advance. And I can choose when I want to eliminate a food from a meal, or switch something out to keep under or nearer my daily numbers.8 -
Sure. Who hasn't? My simple theory is that we lose to feel/look better. When we accomplish that we think it's ok to eat more or exercise less because that is what we prefer.5
-
Oh yes, definitely many times. Now that I am older I am hoping I can keep it off this time after I get to the point where I want to be. There's always hope, ha.8

Yes when I was 30 I lost105 lbs in a little over a yr. I kept it off for about 3 yrs then gained it all plus more over about 8 yrs. I then decided enough was enough when I was about 46, , I joined MFP and lost 135 lbs in 3 yrs, I have kept it off about 12 yrs but started Stress eating this last yr and am now up 12 lbs time to get back to it before it gets out of hand. We can do this. I am now 60.17

About ten years ago I was at 350. I got down to 275 by giving up sugary soda and joining a gym. Two years later I quit going to the gym. And slowly gained back to 335. Then I joined a different gym, and cut out starchy foods. I got back to 275 for a year. Then covid hit and all the gyms closed. I quickly went back to 335. a year and a half ago. I tightened my diet and did some crazy 3- 5 day fasting. Got back to 275 in 3 and a half months. I lived on about 900 calories a day for 9 more months and only managed to drop another 5 lbs. Then I found MFP. I doubled my daily intake and started walking an hour on weekdays. And dropped to 246. I've been a little lax lately and have gained 11 back. But I'm classifiying it as a refeed. To boost my metabolism. I'm confident the pounds will start flying off again as soon as I commit.5

For sure... i lost all my weight five years ago.. and kept it off until this year. In fact.. it was easy to keep it off.. i was simply smaller.. and it was glorious. It ins't a mystery as to how i gained it back. I ate it all back and stopped exercising.. covid didn't help much.. but really most of the gain has been this last year.
I feel pretty resolved to never regain to this point after i lose it this time. I also have noticed most of us have a regain amount limit. I've never gone over 30 pounds overweight.. i always stop and lose the weight at that point.4 -
Yes
Been between 300 and 191 over he last 11 years. My weight gain is always due to a lack of consistency and discipline. This is the story for most of us though I think. Trying to be better though and hold myself accountable for the choices I make. MyFitnessPal is usually a big part of that, because it has no bias. Numbers are numbers, if we put everything we do into it, then it will tell us the truth.
Hope everyone is doing what makes them happy and allows them to meet their goals.5 -
On and off, at my heaviest I was 320. (That was several years ago).
Now i'm 247 and going down.
I think it's quite normal to start and stop several times.2 -
Yep i'm 75 years young. And I must have played with the same weight for at least 1,000 lbs off and on off and on. Oh well it's been like that for 50 years but I do weight 30 lbs less than I did 20 years ago. So i'm back at it today marking 4 good days lol. As long as when we fall we pick ourselves back up.6

3 times in the last 10 yrs I’ve lost 20+ lbs and gained them back plus interest each time. This time I’m determined to lose 45 and learn to maintain!3

Yes, and that's why I'm back (again). I quit smoking at 40 and promptly gained lbs. I am now 69 and I have lost and gained it back more than 6 times over the last 29 years. You would think I would learn, but after I lose, I just go back to the way I was eating. Every time I tell myself that I won't gain it back, and I do. I am frustrated with myself for having to do this yet again. You would think I would have learned by now.5
-
It is certainly a learning process every time we lose and gain lose and gain. We learn something. Just don't fall and stay down keep doing like that baby who falls all the time what does he do he picks himself up and try again and again until he walks in a perfect line. We can do this. We will do this.

Yes, I've reached my goal weight 3 times. (12 years ago, 8 years ago, 3 months ago.)
Never had to lose as much as this time before, though. You can do it again!5 -
Yes, this is the third time I've reached goal weight. I'm now trying to live by the mantra that people regain when they stop doing what works, so don't stop. But also, if I do regain it again I have confidence now that I can lose it again.1

Yes. I lost weight and got down to my goal weight in 2014. Then- had a baby. With that came severe post partum depression. And with my depression I ate everything in sight. It was one of my only comforts I had. Then I got pregnant with my second baby. I actually lost weight during that pregnancy. But once again- motherhood, full time working mom, and life lead to more weight gain. I was finally up to my ‘highest weight ever.’ I lost 40# over the past year. I have at least that much more to lose again. Just trying to stay focused and keep my eye on the goal. I want to be healthy and active for my 2 kids.4

I was 225 in 2021. I eventually dropped down to 202 by the end of 2022 but went up to 215 by the summer of 2023.
I'm currently losing weight again. I was eating the same thing for all three meals during the first half of 2023. Not because of an eating disorder or anything, but because I am just a bit insane and became an EXTREMELY picky eater during that time. I also stopped working out since I felt discouraged that I wasn't losing weight that fast enough.
I'm working out again and trying to eat normally, so no more being insane haha.3 -
Yes. For me it's a mental issue. I cannot see myself any other way than fat. And, I think after I've lost the weight, I can miraculously go back to eating the way I was before and not gain anything. I'm a very all or nothing thinker and that doesn't help either. This time, I'm going to be gentle with myself and just keep shooting for eating on plan 85-90% so I don't give up or feel like a failure. Good luck to you - you can do it!2
-
Of course. Story of my life. I have lost over 100 pounds got down to 150. Got up to 292 had gastric bypass got down to 220. Went back to my highest weight ever over the years to 314 pounds. Lost the weight back down to 220. Recently two years ago got up to 270 dieted back down to 225. Now I am around 250 and hopefully trending downward again. What I noticed though I am catching myself quicker before there is too much weight gain. I only gained 25 pounds this time instead of 50 or 70. Eventually I hope to catch myself if I gain 5 pounds1
-
Yes. Deliberately lost weight once and kept it off, (+5lbs but that's just maintenance to me). Lost it again after 2 pregnancies. I have since kept it off mostly because I really changed the way that I eat and I became active (I was mostly sedentary the first time around). Now, I'll go in a calorie deficit every now and then just to lose a little for aesthetic reasons.2

I'm 5'6 and my weight has yo-yo'd most of my adult life with major episodes of loss usually tied to something happening in my life like divorce / deaths / illness. I'm going through menopause and have been stuck on my weight for a couple of years now and it doesn't want to budge.2
-
Yeah...I lost around 35-40 Lbs from fall 2012 through the late spring of 2013...pretty much maintained that up until 2020 save for seasonal fluctuations. 2020-2022 I put on about 20 Lbs (most of it during lockdowns) and have maintained that for 2023 and now actively working to cut it.1
-
I'm on about respawn number 4 now. Each time I gain a bit more weight and it gets a bit harder to lose the fat and harder to rebuild the muscle I gained.
For my first attempt and on my third I worked with a trainer, so I should know what I'm doing by now, but this time around the scale isn't budging and I feel I no longer have the right to ask for help.0 -
by 2021, I was down to 180 for the 3rd time in 2 decades. Each of the first 2 times, my rebound weight went higher each time. So the 3rd time, I had to lose 65 to get to 180--and caught myself just before hitting 30 lbs regained.
So, yeah, this is "normal." It takes time to find out what works, what interferes, what one likes enough to return to as a staple of the new lifestyle, etc. I had a decades long bad habit of refusing to exercise if it couldn't be a 3 mile or more jog. So stupid. Even short walks are good for me! And they really help with the idea of sustainability.0
