So, my son is allergic to gluten. He just turned 2 this past weekend, so I made him a gluten free cake for his party. It was DELICIOUS. I figured out there are about 25 portions in the cake and we ate 10 at the party. Now I have choices as to what to do with this cake that is totally haunting me, but I've been resisting:

1) Keep it, but put it in the deep freeze, when he gets invited to parties he can't have their cake and it can be cut and taken along.
2) Keep it, put it in the deep freeze, you never know when you need cake period
3) Keep it, leave it in the freezer drawer and slowly but surely eat it as the calories are available
4) Take it to work and share it
5) Trash (it's really too good for this option, but I'll throw it out there anyway)

I would freeze a little bit for your son on special occasions, but bring the rest into work!

WORK! You can always make another fresh cake for the other reasons. I say get it out of the house.

#1 - if you know its for your son, will you eat it?!? Think about him being at a party and NOT being able to have cake!! Cut the cake into little pieces just for his and freeze them individually in Ziplock bags ... they are KId size.. so if you happen to take one it won't be that bad.. and if you resist they are there for him!

My nephew needs a special menu and missing out on cake is always a killer for him. Save some for your son and share the rest

I take all my "extra" sweets to church or to my SIL. (she has four teenage boys)

Don't trash it!! When my hubby turned 40, I bought a cake for him to have at work. He brought home the leftovers and I put them in the freezer. Every now and then, I cut off a little piece here & there..... as you noted, when the space is available in the diary. (and to be quite honest, some days when it isn't available.... )

Still have a little chunk left, and he'll be 41 in 5 weeks.

I say toss it! I always feel good knowing I just chunked something that was tempting me.... Plus, it's just cake and you can make another one.

    I like the first option.

If I know its specifically for my kids, I won't touch it. I spend the extra money on pre-packaged treats for my kids lunches or what-have-you. Right now I have 2 kids in school so if I was to eat one, it would screw up the dividing between them so I never touch them. If the packages come in 6, the older two girls get three each, or all three girls can have two each. I don't like to throw a wrench in that.

Knowing that cake is there for the sole purpose so your son can enjoy cake like all the other kids would definitely keep me from digging at it. I'd feel like I was taking that away from him. Picture him having to sit out of the group while all the other kids are having a treat. I've seen that before at a kids party and its sad.

I would portion it out and freeze it. I bake a lot and always end up with left overs. I have actually never thought about freezing them. I probably should because my son is lactose intolerant and can't have regular icing made with butter. I usually end up doing all the baking for family and friend events so I know he can have it... It would be a lot easier to freeze the left overs and bring that along. I usually just end up staring at it until it gets stale and then throwing it in the trash.
  • personally i'd save one piece for with tomorrow's coffee, one piece for your son, and find a way to give the rest away. you can always bake fresh next time an event comes up.

I've been known to take a serrated knife to frozen-solid two-layer carrot cakes that are in my deep freezer, when i'm desperate. I can't keep it around.

you know your own levels of self-control :)
  • are you close to PA? bring it to my house. i'll help you eat it.
