What kinds of clothing look flattering on pear shaped figure

I've come to the realization that even when I reach my goal weight my body will still remain a pear (just smaller) :grumble:
So my question is, what type of clothes flatter our figure the best?

A pear costume? Hahahahahahaha!
Try wrap dresses. They flatter most figures.0 -
I'm the same - AND short-waisted. Tucking things in doesn't work for me. I try to get fitted pants - with a straight leg. Nice fitting shirts that can just graze the hipline...or ones with tucks/pleats that show our shape. It's a toughy. I'll be checking back in to see what others say.0

Dress like one of the Fruit of the Loom guys!0 -
What is wrong with a pear?! I am a pear shape and i love it.0

tops with princess seams
patterns at the neckline - ie sparkle there means less attention elsewhere...
solid (minimal print) bottoms - darker is better...

There's a great book that gives lots of fashion advice- and you are absolutely right. I have the same problem LOL. The book is called "It's So You" I think the author is Mary Sheen Warren or something similar.
Here's the summary of what I remember regarding pear shape (there is a LOT of other stuff in the book):
1> Light on top, dark on the bottom
2> Patterns or prints or textures on top, solids on the bottom.
3> Jewel neck or boat neck or square neck tops are good, v-neck tops are not good.
4> Avoid plaids and horizontal stripes on the bottom at all costs.
5> Horizontal stripes on top are great!!
6> Sleeveless tops in general are not good- they make our shoulders look even smaller0 -

I'm also pear shaped myself. When it comes to pants I usually get the ones that kind of flare out at the bottom so it doesn't focus on my thighs and butt area too much. I hardly wear shorts either, but I do wear capri pants which are loose in the calf area.0 -

Oh yeah- wrap dresses and wrap skirts are good! Just make sure they wrap enough when you sit down LOL.0 -
Try to draw attention to your top, not your bottom. Pops of color or chunky necklaces.0

Belt your dresses if they're not a wrap dress. I'm somewhere between an houglas and a pear, and a lot of time the dress will fit one place and not another... So if in doubt, fit your lower half, then belt the top or have it altered. With seperates, fit the top and bottom SEPERATELY. Clothes look immensely better in different sizes than just one size overall...0

All of those cute dresses that are tight in the waist and flair out a bit around the hips are perfect for our shape. I am a pear too and I LOVE those dresses. The key to being a pear is to take notice on your waist and above....since we have big hips (Birthing hips, my grandma says) If you define your waist and above it will take the attention off of your hips.0

A line skirts and dresses are your best friends
Straight leg or slightly flared pants to balance out the thighs
No woman or man should ever wear pleated pants, period.0 -
Dark wash jeans-not black, just dark. Anything with bleaching, fading, etc. on the thighs will just draw attention. Try wearing tops that draw the eye to the smallest part of your torso, just under your breasts. For dresses an empire waist or an a-line skirt would be best. Avoid pencil skirts and anything that hits above the knee. Try bright colors on top and darker colors on bottom. Basically, draw the attention up, not down, and avoid anything that draws attention to the thighs and hips.
I watch a lot of What Not To Wear and take their advice very seriously, as I am SERIOUSLY pear shaped :-) lol0 -
well when I was thinner I loved corsets and will wear tons again. They accentuate your waist and boobs and detract from wider thighs! You can wear them with darker jeans, loose flare skirts or dresses. I love empire dresses and I agree the whole square neckline thing helps a lot ! Like the majority has stated no bright colors or designs on bottom and wear things that draw attention to the top and waist! Bustiers are always fun and sassy but modest enough when worn with a vest or light jacket! I also love shirts and jackets to hit the beginning of my hips not higher or lower! Good luck!0

My first and most important thing no matter what type of clothes I wear I need to be comfortable. Then I wear solid matching colors with Jeans find yourself a comfortable pear they go with anything. Be yourself and don't be conscious.0

Slightly flared jeans offset attention to your waist.0

I'm very much a true pear too, and I've found that a great pair of jeans(boot cut or skinny) that have a simple wash and a little stretch are flattering. A-line skirts and dresses will show off your smaller waist, but a form fitting pencil skirt with a little stretch once again, will show off your curves. It's all a matter of trying things on, things that might look unflattering on the hanger, could suit you. It's all about trying new things and styles. Bring a friend you trust to help you find a new look. You should treat yourself after all your hard work.

In addition to the great recommendations above, let me add this. My mom bought me a subscription to Missus Smarty Pants (www.missussmartypants.com) several years ago. She considers our shape to be a "B" and recommends:
Flat front pants with horizontal pockets and straight legs. Diagonal slash pockets will gap and pleats on pants are a huge NO.
Well fitting blouses with Princess seams, not tucked
Jackets that end above the hips
A-line dresses or skirts
I could probably dig through old emails to come up with more but I dropped my subscription awhile back because I'd learned what I needed to and didn't need her weekly shopping ideas, great as they are. That said, her service is fantastic, especially if you're just learning how to dress for your size and shape.
My work wardrobe consists of the first two items, almost exclusively. I love Eddie Bauer's wrinkle-free shirts and their Blakely fit pants which are one size smaller in the waist than the hips and live in them at the office. They also work well every day and I've gotten some great compliments on them. I swear they're also the reason most people don't think I need to lose weight: my clothes make me look slimmer than I really am.
Keep in mind that those of us who are petite should stay away from flared pants which make us look shorter. Not all pear-shaped women have small shoulders. I'm built like a linebacker in that area but I'm still a pear.0 -
