April is AUTISM AWARENESS MONTH

Options
It is estimated that 1 in 110 children in the USA have an autism spectrum disorder with an estimated 1.5 million people in the USA who are affected by autism. Boys are more often diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder at a rate of 3 to 4 times more. In the USA, it is estimated that 1 in 70 boys is diagnosed with autism.

My oldest son is autistic. He was born prematurely at 28 weeks and weighed 1lb 10oz.. Knowing he would mostly likely develop a disibility, I sarted EARLY INTERVENTION upon his discharge. My son started physical therapy at 4 weeks and speach, and occupational thereapy at 8mnths. We also did behavioral therapy for 1 year at age 3. He is now 7 years old (socially he's aout 4 or 5) and considered high functioning. Our current PT goals are strength, and balance, with more focus to balancing on one leg. OT goals are to learn how to tie shoe laces, and making simple meals like sandwiches. Speech goals are to properly answer "Wh" questions, and breaking echolalic speech.

Because April is AUTISM AWARENESS MONTH I have provided some resourceful links below, but I would like to know more about you. (1) Do you know someone with autism (2) Is there a great toy, organization, website etc you would like others to know about.
(3) since we are all here to loose weight, how have you balanced dieting and excercise with being a parent, work and stress.

My 13 year old has Asperger's. A lot of people don't understand why my son behaves the way he does sometimes. He is very immature for his age. (at least 2 years behind other children) Awareness is so important
David was diagnosed at 10 with Asperger's, before that he held an ADHD (pssh) diagnosis from the time he was 4. I have fought the school system for 2 years to get him services at school. The district had no one trained in autism to help, so I fought for that . With the help from my advocate our district now has a contract with an autism specialist. It's a small victory, but a victory nonetheless.

my youngest will be 3 next month and was developing normally and speaking as an infant. Then at around a year he wasn't talking as much, but still some signs and I thought he was just focusing on walking. Then at around 16-17 months he stopped looking at me and I knew something was wrong. He's stools also changed and they became mucousy and lots of diarrhea. He still doesn't talk (only says a few words here and there...nothing consistant), I have him on a gluten free and caisen free diet (taking digestive enzymes and probiotics) which can be very challenging, but his stools have gotten totally better. He attends an autism school/therapy center since last Oct. that came to the area and it's been a God send. They just got a speech therapist and he has a therapy plan so I'm hopeful. It's been very difficult as you know. He makes strides in some areas, but then feels like there's deficits in other areas. He started grouping things together and moving them around and now when he gets frustrated he (gently) bangs his hand on his head. This has increased a lot over the past week :frown:

Thanks for the above links :flowerforyou:

    Thirteen-year zombie thread, still relevant.

My second son was diagnosed with Asperger's at age 2, we got him speech and behavioral therapy. Fast forward 18 years and he's graduated from high school with honors and now serves in the US Army infantry.

My 38 year old son has autism. I was lucky Dad was a school administrator so I knew the special education laws in my state.
I took him to my local school he didn’t like lines or strange places. While I was waiting in the school superintendent’s office he broke way went running down the school hallway screaming. I told the superintendent that he started to talk and then “forgot” how. He can’t say mom. The superintendent said “he’s just spoiled.” I told him “ok don’t help us, in 3 years he will be in your WIFE’S kindergarten class, she can educate him.”
Within a week several Area education people came. He kicked and screamed.
At the 1st staffing he needs further evaluation, we suspect autism. We couldn’t test him when we came to your home he kicked at screamed for 40 minutes.
The medical clinic called it pervasive developmental disorder at age 2.that’s a form of autism We don’t know if he will talk. 4 out of 10,000 children have this. Mostly boys.
He went to PUBLIC school in January turned 3 in February.
At 4 he talked entire sentences, whole scenes out of movies. At 10 the evaluated him for attention deficit disorder. “ he was evaluated so young, he has autism not PDD” He doesn’t have attention deficit disorder.
He had education classroom aids always. He graduated went to community college. MOVED OUT! Works part time.
If they let me run the world we’d pay pro-football players 40k a year, make them buy their own equipment. We’d pay those special education teachers the millions those pro athletes make.
