Man, frozen meals have really changed since I was a kid...

As a kid, I would eat them all the time, what with my Dad always working. They were AWFUL. A few lumps of "meat" in brown gravy, a weird white mass that was supposed to be mashed potatoes, some discolored corn kernels and a weird BROWN mass that was supposed be dessert.

Now-a-days, they have things like Szechuan shrimp, butternut squash ravioli, paninis and spring rolls and God knows what else.

Of course, these things are packed with sodium (the bane of my existence), and I'm sure the meat they use is still grade "C"... but boy are they delicious compared to what they used to be.

The Kashi frozen meals aren't as bad, it's been a while since I've had one so I don't know the calorie content, but I remember it was really tastey.

They are definitely a sodium nightmare, but taste quite a lot better than the ones from when we were kids! What about making your own meals and freezing them? That'll help cut out a ton of the sodium!

Kashi and Amy's have some versions that are great tasting, packed with whole grains, and "slightly" lower in sodium. Still a lot though, and I also try and keep sodium low - my weight fluctuates like crazy if I don't, so I make easily freezable low-calorie casseroles, chili, spaghetti, etc, then put in portion size containers and thaw and take to work with me.

Amy's Kitchen makes some tasty frozen entrees in the "Light in Sodium" product line.
Those meals have 340mg or less of sodium.

  • Now that you mention it, I've seen that Amy's stuff at the store, but never tried it! There is a lot of tasty looking things on the site, I'll have to give some of it a try!

    Thanks!

I find that at lunch a frozen meal is sometimes a lot easier - I have two cats, 2 snakes and a dog to deal with in the mornings and I rarely have time to pack for work. I really like some of the new Lean Cuisine meals, and I found that the weight watchers (smart ones in Canada) are really nice too.
