Proteins that aren't meat?

I'm not a vegetarian but I do get tired of trying to get enough protein in my diet through the usually sources-- chicken and fish. Sometimes I have beef but not very often, mostly because of budget not preference. Anyway I was wondering if anyone has good suggestions for protein rich foods (if they were high in iron that'd be great too, I've had some trouble with anemia) that are a little more out of the box. Thanks!

Have you tried buffalo? It's much leaner than ground beef, and sweeter, so you'll have to play around a bit with it, but it's REALLY good. My dietician has just announced she'd like me to try ostrich - not sure what I think of this idea, but you could check that out, too.
Tempeh is fabulous! It's fermented tofu with brown rice in it, and it's as hearty as meat. Doesn't sound particularly appealing when you see WHAT it is, but OH, does it taste good! I like to make meatballs with it and serve it with eggplant parmesan, or use it as the base of sweet and sour stir fry.
Good luck, and good health!0 -

Greek yogurt - no added sugar.
Tofu - so many meat eaters write it off! Great in stir frys and asian food. I can get a flavoured tofu in my supermarket for snacking too.
Nuts.
Beans and lentils have both proteins and carbs. There are so many beany lentilly things around.

Thanks for the ideas-- some of those I've never even heard of so it should give me a chance to try some new recipes0

Egg whites. I usually hardboil 'em and just throw the yolk out, but I'll also just buy egg whites in the carton, and add extra lean turkey ham for even more protein. I love turkey burger (97% lean) and kidney beans (I'll buy 'em canned and heat 'em up with chopped tomatoes for a quick meal.) Greek yogurt is also very good! To avoid goin' above my sugar limit though I'll just buy the plain kind and add sugar-free fruit preserves. Hope this helps!0

Wild game is very high in omega 3 fats (as is grass fed, pasture raised cattle) and low in saturated fats that are associated with feedlot beef. I had an amazing venison in blueberry glaze at a restaurant ... here's a recipe that approximates it.

I'd like to add to the poster that mentioned ostrich, it is YUMMY!!!!! (however pretty pricey and I can't find it like I used to be able too...)
But the state fair is coming up and they always have ostrich burgers! oh yea!
Good luck!0
