Ellipticals and hrm's

I recently got a great deal on a elliptical, which is probably my favorite way to get in cardio. Both my elliptical and mfp calculate my calorie burn at about 10 cals/minute. This seems too good to be true. On average, how much do you burn using the elliptical and your hrm? I know factors such as weight and intensity play a key role in this, but I'm just wondering in general. I am 146 pounds right now, and I just got the machine last night, so I haven't messed with the resistance much, but will tonight.

Anyone with a similar weight own a hrm and use a elliptical?

I wear my HRM and workout on the elliptical. I worked out this afternoon, at a resistance of 2 and 3. I am 195 and I burned 527. Your HRM will be accurate, dont go by what the machine tells you. I hope you have a good HRM that has a band you wear under the chest..that will be very accurate.

I had bought a usedelliptical machine from Play It Again Sports about 4 months ago. I got a good deal on it, but not sure if the computer is accurate. The machine is not that old, but I rather go by what MFP has.

I wear a HRM when I work out on the gym on the elliptical. I use it at a level 10 (of 20, I think, although it may be 25). I find my HR goes up to about 170 and according to my HRM (a Polar FT7) I burn more than 10 cals/minute (I'm 5'10, 160 lbs). In 30 minutes I burn about 400 cals, apparently. But there are 3 types of ellipticals at the gym, different brands I guess, and I move differently on each one, and my HR is different on each one, as is my calorie burn.

Good luck! I think an elliptical is a great workout for max calorie burn.

Hello! I have a Polar FT7 HRM, which I love and have learned to value. Formerly, I relied on the burn from the machine...which was generally twice what my HRM calculates. I used to count 700 0r 800 cals burned for the elliptical (which I use nearly every day at the gym). Once I got my HRM and started relying on its read out, my cals burned are at least half of what the machines say. This was a hard adjustment, but dare I say, that I do believe it is more accurate.

    Good luck!

Your post caught my attention because the elliptical is my favorite equipment also. I found this site today "healthstatus" and used the calculators. They seemed to be on target with what the machines at the gym tell me. I'm certainly no expert, but hope the site can be helpful to you.

The elliptical is also my favorite cardio machine. The machine I use at my gym seemed very low compared to MFP. Under 100 cal burned in 35 min of excercise with a 4.5 average mph on a medium interval training setting, also I am about 250lbs :(. MFP says I am burning more like 350 cal. I spent about an hour sifting through googled websites last night, trying to figure out which seemed more reasonable. I didn't find any websites that I recognized (so I can't say definitively), but the general consensus I found was more toward the higher numbers. Also the websites generally said that ellipticals burn a bit more calories than treadmills. So I hope any of that helps. Sorry I wasnt able to find any very reputable websites. If anyone else knows a good place to find that info, I would like it too! Thanks.

10 calories/ minute is about right for me when I'm kicking my butt, i.e. the hardest I can go. On a 30- to 60-minute session, though, it averages down to about 9 calories/ minute. I am 29 years old, female, and 135.5 lbs.
