When I use my elliptical the calories burned for 30 mins is 137 (according to the elliptical) but ccording to MFP it should be 435. Why such a huge difference?? I want credit for every single calorie darn it! LOL! If anyone has the answer I would love to know, thank you!!

The only way to really know what you're burning is to use a heart rate monitor. Everyone's individual burn is different.0

I know, for Tae Kwon Do, I get 700 cals, but I put down 350.
I made the mistake of following MFP for the first week with those details. But we are all different. Get a Heart Rate Monitor, then you will know what you are burning!!!
I would say there is a huge difference as there are so many different weights on this site!! You have to make it work for you xx
Hope that helps, I did not loose a lb on my first week, now I have changed the amount of cals I burn acording to me, sooooo I should loose at least a lb this week, also I have always been at least 200 under my daily goal (sometimes this reaches 2,000 cals, I train hard) So to not loose weight made me think.... I read sometimes that people loose 500 cals for an hour run, when I use about 250/300 depending on how I run/jog!!
Hope that makes sense xx0 -
Did you put your age and weight into the machine? If so, I would be more inclined to go by the machine and not mfp........ until you can get a HRM :-)0

what type of hrm do you suggest? i've been trying to find the best one for a reasonable price (under $100).0

Go to wal-mart.com, you might be able to find one there.0

Use a HRM monitor for more accuracy. I have a Polar and I like it a lot!!!! Got it on ebay!0

Get a Heart Rate Monitor (HRM) and you will be amazed at how far off other "calories burned calculators" are!! AND the machines at the gym!
I got one and my ACTUAL calories was about HALF of what I had been using!! (this will hurt but you will recover)
I got a Polar FT7 from Amazon for $78.
Easy, smeesy to use too.
Not sure how others work but the FT7 has a chest strap that is about half elastic and adjustable. There is a "sensor" on the strap and you position that right in the front~ I put it right between and under the "girls". Make sure the strap is securely in place.
Then there's a "watch" you'll wear that receives the data transmitted by the chest sensor. You'll enter your own personal information like age, weight, etc and follow the easy instructions to get going!.:bigsmile:0 -
Thanks everybody! Im a little embarassed at how out of shape i am and how uneducated i am about working out. my elliptical has a heart monitor and ive never used it. i always thought it was pointless since the machine "calculated" it for me. i really appreciate the help!!0

Ditch the embarrassment if you can. We're all learning - just like you - and all here to help each other. I'm always doing a search for some question or another - or posting a topic about something I'm curious about. :flowerforyou: And everyone's in a different level of fitness or health. Don't compare yourself with others. That's the best advice you'll hear all day. :-)0 -

Do you wear the chest strap and HRM all day or only when you exercise? And do you have to wear the watch?0
