Ladies: What is your rule for clothes shopping when you're l

I'm not a big clothing shopper. I've never gotten extremely excited about it, partially because the clothes never looked as cute on be as I hoped they would. It also seems like a waste of money to buy a whole new wardrobe every time I changed a size.
Once I get down to my goal weight, that might change. I can justify buying some really good pieces of clothing then.

I generally dress pretty nice, so I like my clothing to fit, and not be baggy and shapeless. This winter I'm about 30 lbs lighter than last year and I'm working to lose a lot more. You can certainly start to see the difference in the fit. One of the things I am really noticing is my winter coat. It fit really well last year, but now it just looks sloppy.

What do you do in the meantime? How do you deal with changing sizes and your closet without breaking the bank?

    It's tricky... And expensive!
I've bought a bare minimum of new clothes -ie. one new pair of work pants in each smaller size p,ls have gone shopping at the Good Sammies thrift store - great for jeans and shorts. And bought cheap tshirts and mixed and matched them with other things in my wardrobe - like cardigans- that don't have to fit so well.
Anything that is too big goes straight put the door!
I'm pretty much at my goal now so I'm feeling as though I can actually buy some new stuff!

I go to Goodwills and shop the cheap clearance racks at Walmart. Until I reach my goal weight, it's not even worth it to keep buying expensive clothes, only for me to wear them for 4 weeks.

If you have a quality tailor in your town, run (do not walk) there! They really can pull in your bigger clothes to make the fit flattering and it is (generally) less expensive than buying a whole new in between wardrobe :)

I like to wear yoga pants. They fit good at one time, but then I got chubby and they fit bad, like the waist band looked all crinkled up lol. Now they fit like they used but I'm still losing weight so I think I could lost another 20lbs and they will still fit. Or you can get dressy looking pants at lane new york for 25ish on sale and they have a stretching waist that will fit for a good while. I wear those to work usually
  • I went to a new store where they buy clothing and got me a pair of capris to get me through the summer. I am going to have to do it again cuz none of my winter clothes fit.

I haven't had to buy a new wardrobe yet, as I still have the clothes from before I gained the weight in the first place.

When my pants get to the point where not only will they not stay up without a belt, but also look really sloppy with the belt, I relegate them to the back of the wardrobe. (Because although I vow that this time will be different, every other time I've lost weight, I've eventually regained it, and I don't want to have to buy a new wardrobe when I'm fat).

Tops and coats, I don't bother about. Tops that are up to 2 sizes larger than I need now still seem okay to me.

I look for sales and clearance items. I shop at stores like mandees and pretty girl for basic shirts and jeans that don't make me look foolish. Who can afford to buy a new wardrobe every month? I know I can't

LOL that's what I do, too. I buy a few black workout pants and I use them as my "dressy" work pants. but Shhhhhhhhh!!! :)

Stores like Ross or TJ Maxx or Old Navy are perfect for what you're talking about. I also try to keep a good amount of my clothing (tops and dresses, etc) in a style I can wear whether I'm a size up or a size down. Belts and sashes are must haves.

I just got a bunch of "new" things at a clothes trading party. You could throw one yourself. Invite your girlfriends over and everyone cleans out the things in there closet that they don't want - too big, too small, just don't like it anymore. In my case we divided everything into piles based on size and then everyone rummages through them and takes what they want. Anything that is left over gets donated to Goodwill.

Even if you don't wind up with anything, it is still a fun time.

There is a woman in my community that will alter clothes pretty cheaply. A few tucks can make a difference in a blouse or pants. Coat is harder. Check Goodwill or ARC--they might have a decent coat to tide you over.
  • Good thing I kept my old "skinny clothes" when I was still bigger so that I can have something to wear in case I lose weight. But now they are too loose for me. Usually I bought new pairs of jeans when I lost 10cm on my waist wherein I needed to hold it so it won't fall.
  • When I recently had to get a new pair of jeans, I went looking for the Lane Bryant Right Fits (which they don't sell anymore ... grrrrr ...) that I knew fit me. (The jeans wore out, so just needed the same size.)

I was pretty successful on eBay. Got two very gently used pairs and one new pair for less than half of what I would have paid for them new (even with shipping) and I saved money on gas by not making a bunch of wasted trips to find something that fit.

It's where I'm planning to sell my fat clothes

My gym used to do trading parties... maybe I should suggest we have another one.

As for keeping old clothes, I haven't been this weight for 15 years. Styles have changed a little bit :)

    Thanks for all the advice!
