Comments on open diaries

What is the point of opening your diary if your friends are just commenting "wtg" without bothering to check what you've been up to that day. :ohwell:
I have noticed a lot of this going on in my news feed for several weeks now on my friend's diaries. I think it's safe to say that those of us who have open diaries have opened them so we can receive feedback and be held accountable for our food choices. And of course, to get a pat on the back when we do well.
But lately I am seeing a lot of "good job" and "wtg" comments on food diaries that really should be getting no such kudos. It's obvious they aren't even looking in the diaries.
Personally if my diary is just horrible I want my friends to say "What the heck, Joy! Left over pizza for breakfast!? Are you serious! I hope you sweat that out at the gym".
My food diary is open so my friends can push me in the right direction, isn't yours?

Haven't been here long enough to make friends that I'd start giving the smack down on yet, but I think just logging for the day is kinda why they say wtg, etc because they are still happy to see the person being accountable, even if the food choices aren't great or they are under/over eating. -.-0

PS Nice gun.

It's not the over/under eating that concerns me. It' the poor food choices.0 -
PS - Nice abs

Come on you're better than this! ;-)
I can't really scold others when I don't eat the best, but I do workout regularly and I am in pretty good shape so for now I eat what I want. I do know that if I focused more on my diet I could cut up more, but given the life that most of us lead its hard to do that.
With that being said, I encourage the effort put out, when there is an effort, and I wont criticize people when I'm just as guilty. Personally I think you look great so I can't comment on you...sorry0 -

Oh man, I think I'd be defriending a bunch of people if they started nagging on my food choices, lol. Sometimes I like wings with my husband. Sometimes I like wine. Sometimes I eat 1500 cals of milk and cereal because I can (I'm into advanced training) and I eat 80% clean and 20% treats during the week, and sometimes I have refeeds, lol I think it'd be hilarious to see what people would say to my refeed days. :O0 -

I think you missed my point entirely.
And frankly I am offended that you "Think I can do better than this" because I expressed my opinion which you happen to not agree with.
Saying "wtg" on a crappy diary is reinforcing negative behaviours and it is not criticizing someone to tell them they can do better tomorrow. If you are happy that people are logging then why don't you say "nice logging today" instead.
Constructive criticism and positive encouragement is WHY I have friends on MFP. Otherwise what's the point? There are much better food logging systems out there, but they don't have the community.
PS - I never see you comment on anything I do anyway

LOL. They would probably say "Omg I am so jealous".
But I am not talking about picking apart your friends food choices.0 -

My diary isn't open to anyone and I was getting comments......But the comments were for me being under my calories for the day not about what I was eating.......Thanks goodness I don't have it open otherwise I would hate to see what people would comment.....:noway:0 -
Oohh I understand now! I agree that I would Love constructive criticism! If I have a crappy food logging day I put in my note why so my friends know my reason. If I see that its not the "healthiest" choices I will comment with a "ooh looks yummy!" because I know a lot of my friends do not want the criticism. Then I see great diaries that I will tell them how good they did!
I dont like getting a wtg honestly xD I like when people read my diary0 -
GJ! Woot! Awesome!
All blanket compliments out of obligatory friendship and kindness. I use mine as a form for social experimenting. So far my extreme eating patterns illustrate that any form of a deficit, even the greater deficits, seem to warrant more acclamation from the general populous.
Either way, it's meh to me. Everyone knows I do whatever the hell I want anyway, regardless of compliments or comments.0 -

I think in that case people are commenting because you logged your foods and you were under your calorie goal. I don't think there's anything wrong with that, because people aren't knowingly congratulating you for eating garbage. I say "WTG" on my friend's closed diaries because I have faith in them that they did a good job for that day. But if my friend has had a really bad diary for a couple days that I can see I will ask them what's going on and kick them in the tush for a jump start for sure. :laugh:0 -

Hmmm....I guess I shouldn't post when I'm overtired but I'll keep going. Too be honest I don't really look at diaries since I only do my diary for me. I don't think I've ever commented on anyone's diary before, I only comment on their workouts if I feel it was a good effort. I'll be more attentive to your diary if you'd like but I know many people are sensitive to that and since I'm a little too blunt sometimes I don't want it to come off wrong and hurt someones feelings when that wasn't my intention.0 -
Come on people, let's be adults.
There is nothing wrong with seeing fruit loops for a friend's breakfast and saying "Fruit loops, eh? Do you like oatmeal? You could mix in real fruit instead!"0 -
completely agree! One day I didnt eat at all and got a few people saying how good i did
I HATE that! That, and the way to go on weight loss when it was 7 pounds in a week (bad tweaking of the diary). Um, NO! That is NOT ok! Nor, is it something to give me kudos on! Pay attention or keep your trap SHUT!0 -

Exactly!! The day I did this I was getting ready for surgery so I couldnt really eat, but no one knew that!! I always ready a persons diary before I post :]0 -

I would laugh and say "hey, try living a little... I'll eat whatever the Hell I samn well please, as long as it fits in my macros."

I like to look at my friends' diaries so I can look for eating ideas, especially as so many of my friends are like me with the gastric lap band.
Personally, I can't compliment anyone on going under their calorie goals if their diary is full of poor food choices or if they only eat one meal a day. And I would be disappointed if someone gave me a WTG on an off day's diary.0 -

I think that's the problem - a lot of people don't even bother to read the diaries and just see that a friend was under their goal and wants to be supportive. I wouldn't assume every WTG! is someone looking at the diary entries. I'd guess most are just looking at the statement that their friend us under calories for the day.My diary isn't open to anyone and I was still getting the comments......But the comments were for me being under my calories for the day........

Also, one of the failings of this site (IMO) is that the format is set up to congratulate weight loss only, without any regard to what might be healthy, or even what the person is trying to accomplish. For example, I think coming in 10 calories over is a lot healthier than someone with ED issues coming in 1000 calories under. Besides, the calorie intake is our goal, right? Which should mean that if someone came in EXACTLY at 0 calories left over, then they should get the most congrats, since that person is following the plan they set out to do most closely. But the site isn't really set up that way.0 -

lol, sometimes you just gotta have it. Of course, in my case, its a damn Laffy Taffy and a Monster - on OCCASSION, not daily.0 -

My weakness is lattes. I try to limit them to three a week. I don't usually like energy drinks but Oh oh!!! I found a random energy drink when I was at the movie store. They are Rockstar in a pink can and have only 10 calories. And they come with a little straw! SQUEE! (Yes! I know it is marketed to women like me and it's only a stupid straw but I can't help it).0 -

So, aside from the straw, does it taste good? I've had a couple flavors of Rockstar before and they just did not float my boat the way the Monster Energy does.....0 -
Would you like to rate my diary? lol0

No.My food diary is open so my friends can push me in the right direction, isn't yours?
But now that you posted this, hopefully you can get friend requests from those who have the same goal on MFP as you do. We all are here for different reasons.0 -
are you saying I shouldn't eat leftover pizza for breakfast? what about cupcakes? please don't look in my diary :laugh:0

Agree with this. I have my own plan and I like to think I know what I'm doing with that. I have days I am under and days I am over. In fact, until recently I was trying to gain weight so getting the "wtg" for a dairy that was under was actually the opposite of what should be said but anyway that is a whole other topic.
I generally don't even look at the food choices, just a quick skim and just have a look at the macros. Looks good, give em a good comment
(and I know that other people have different goal macros also so don't want to start arguments over things like this) 0
