Hey this is a bit of a random one ... my mum has lost loads of weight in the past year and she credits it to having three tablespoons of virgin coconut oil everyday with her food after reading an article somewhere. I'm not convinced though (the scientist in me emerges lol), I'm pretty sure she's doing something else to lose weight, probably without even realising. Has anybody else tried this? Did it work?

umm most oils make good laxatives... perhaps that is why she is losing? i am not any sort of dr or anything but that would be my educated guess...

It looks like it may be true! I am considering taking this...3 tbs a day.. but each tbsp is 125 cals. I wonder if I should not count this as part of my calories or what? The second report makes me think not.
Anyways, we'll see how it goes!

I read these articles and some others I found. They have some pretty interesting info! I'm curious though, what did you see in that 2nd article that makes you think you might not have to count the calories? There was so much information, I think I missed or overlooked that part! 375 calories/day is quite a bit, but it looks like the benefits outweigh the cost (of the calories).

this is the good fat i used everyday back when i weighed 145ish on a VERY large female frame...i've gained weight since  but i'm back on track and eating clean...

it's a metabolism booster and won't deposit on your liver...the chemistry behind this stuff is amazing...some people will argue "it's a saturated fat" and blahblahblah, but the science has suggested differently over several years and a few studies...i guess they say if you ingest it, use only extra virgin...if you're using it for your skin, regular (and less expensive) coconut oil is fine and still has the anti-microbial properties 'n' such...i noticed after a month of doing it my skin was so silky soft and my hair was so shiny (that never happened to me before!)

i'm thinking about doing it again, but it's so super expensive....

i use it in my massage practice and my clients love it...

i suggest starting out slow with 1 tablespoon a day for a week, 2 the next week, and so on...i didn't get the runs, but everyone is different...

i love it! now i have to go the whole foods and get some! maybe we can start doing it together next week and let others know our results? lemme know....

Well, I did some more googling and found an article that had this info, so I may have answered my own question:

Even though three tablespoons of coconut oil represents 360 calories, Rothfeld says those calories needn't concern dieters because they're quickly converted to energy.

Um, so they don't count because they're quickly converted to energy? So is table sugar. Not all foods containing calories are the same, but CALORIES are the same. They're all a unit of energy.

Coconut oil contains medium-chain triglycerides. Normally, fats (triglycerides) go through a lengthy process of absorption and being stuck together with some other stuff like cholesterol and proteins before being sent to a cell where they're dropped off. MCT's don't undergo the same process, so their 9 calories per gram are available sooner than the 9 calories per gram of short or long-chain triglycerides. But they're STILL 9 calories per gram.

Well, I admit that guy's logic sounded a bit off to me, but I was able to see where someone would read that statement or one similar to it and think the calories wouldn't "count".

I did the same thing a bout two years ago !! and yeah i lost weight cause the oils from the coconut wouldn't allow my body to keep any of the fat! so in other words i used the bathroom more then i wanted too... I know use it to cook with! i put a little in the pan if im cooking up veggies but to take three tablespoons a day is alot and will mess with your body!

i use it to cook with sometimes. you can get the extra virgin at walmart in the vit section. reg oil in the cooking oil section. the extra virgin cost 10 bucks the reg is about 5.
we use it to cook fish and chicken in. it's really good.
