Do you ever hide the scale?

Good morning everyone!
Got a quick question for you guys--
Lately my weight loss has kinda been stalled and for the first month or so I tried to stay focused but when the scale didn't move much, I found myself starting to "slip up". Recently, I recommitted and the scale is starting to move a little but I feel like I'm becoming obsessed with the scale. Often it dictates how I'll feel that day and I'm kinda feel like it's derailing me.

So my question is...have any of you ever quit the scale for a period of time to just focus on making healthy choices? If so, did it work or did it push you closer to failure?

In case you want to know more on what I'm dealing with, check out my blog post on this issue at:

Feel free to comment here or on my blog directly...I'd love some feedback.

Thanks!

After a while of not losing any weight I decided to stop caring about what the scale said on my weigh-ins. Now that i've stopped focusing on it so much i'm more dedicated to working out and eating healthy to stay within my calorie goal. Lol the plus is that the scale did start to go down :)
  • The one time I put the scale away, I gained 30 pounds. I have to weigh myself daily to keep motivated. Although, everyone is different. I know plenty of people who say the opposite. Good luck!

Yes, it became discouraging, so I quit on 8/31 until my next weigh-in in early 2012. The scale was derailing my progress.

My husband hid the scale from me because it was dictating my emotions. I would get on the scale in the morning and in the evening. I thought that the scale would help me to stay focused - if I saw a loss then I would want more - if I saw a gain then I would try harder. Anyway - he was tired of dealing with the daily ups and downs so he took my scale when I wasn't home. Needless to say, i was furious! I've learned it's okay though. He was right - there are so many more indications of progress than just the scale. My energy level, my ability to run, my knees no longer hurt, my patience has improved, my shirts look better on my body, etc.

I only weigh now once a week on Sunday mornings before I've had anything to eat and before exercising. It has worked for me. It is such an amazing feeling to see a weight loss on Sunday morning - instead of 0.2 pounds or 0.4 lbs - it's 2 pounds or more - some weeks its only 1 lb - but the loss is there and it is amazing!

I would recommend once a week weigh in but then everyone is different, right?! Good luck to you!
  • I focus on clothing rather than scale. There are several articles of clothing hanging in my closet that I have never worn because they were given to me by my friends. Every week I try them on to see if I am closer to wearing them. I have now reached the point of wearing 3 of the pairs of pants and several shirts. I weigh myself once a week that way I don't get disappointed if it is not moving every day.
  • I've asked my husband to hide the scale. Don't tell me where it is, and don't give it back until (x) date!

I weigh myself in the morning and in the evening. I've accepted the fluctuations, but it helps me to keep motivated for sure. I know there are other indicators, but I'm a big fan of seeing my "Weight Lost" banner tick up a few pounds every week or so. :)

I weigh myself every morning and every evening. However I do not worry about the fluctuations. I view this as more research about how foods affect my body, sleep, how I burn fat, etc.

I only really care about the weekly weigh-ins and most importantly how I am progressing on the fitness goals i.e. lifting, running, swimming, etc. If I am getting leaner, stronger, faster, and harder to kill... then the weight loss will follow naturally.

I do not even own a scale. I have not had one since 1998. I do better not weighing in daily and if I owned one, I would step on it every single morning. I weigh at the gym and I only weigh about once a month. I usually know if I'm losing or gaining by the way my clothes fit.
