Have you changed your original Goal Weight? Up or down?

I started at 270, and my initial goal was 180. Like most goal weights, it was a more or less arbitrary number. I chose 180 because
(1) it was a "healthy" weight for my original height (5'11")
(2) I felt really good about myself the last time I was 180
(3) It was a 90 lb loss. Round numbers please me.
Once I got to 190 I was pretty certain I could drop that, so I did.. to 170. But as I approached 175 I knew I could hit 165, a number that kind of scared me. You see, my family intervened in my disordered eating when I was 165 lbs at the age of 19.
Now I'm 165 (give or take a pound or two on any particular day). I'd be happy to maintain here, but I just discovered I need major spine surgery. So I'm eyeing up 155 because the prognosis is better the less a person weighs. This is causing far more anxiety and panic than my initial setting a goal for a 90 lb weight loss. So much for things becoming clearer the lower my weight gets!2 -
I'm 5'2 and my original goal weight was 125, which got me back to the healthy BMI I last had in college. I got there, started running, and fell in love with it. I'm training for a half-marathon and inadvertently lost another 5 pounds. However, I noticed it made running faster and easier so I'm hoping to eventually lose another 5 pounds, which would put me at my high school weight of 115. I love to eat so I never thought getting to my high school weight would be possible, but now I think it is! So I guess I adjusted down! Thank you running!2

Yes. I used to want to weigh 135, but I only really care about body fat now. I used to weigh 153 and be a size 8-10, got down to 142 at a size 6-8 (24% body fat), and now with more muscle I'm 151 and size 4-6 (17% body fat). Weightlifting completely changed my body and relationship with the scale.
This fascinates me, wondering how tall you are, m or f? What diet plan, training plan do you follow? These sound like great goals, ones I would be very happy with but am unsure how to achieve. Also, how long did it take you to achieve this?

Hi kkress92, I'm a 37 yr-old female, 5'7" tall. The change has been over the past 3-4 years, I lost weight initially by lowering my calories and doing running/bodyweight exercises (bootcamp style workouts). That 10/12 lb was over about 6-8 months. My weight fluctuated after that until I started doing Crossfit last January. I also do powerlifting and Olympic lifting, and ride my bike for transportation. I eat 1900-2400 calories most days. (on that first loss I was eating 1750 I think). I have gained back up to 149-151 now but have been getting the dunk tank fat tests and my bodyfat is lowering. I like my body more than I did when I was lighter, and can eat more. I think the heavy squats and overhead lifts have done the most for my shape, they work everything.1 -
I am a 41 year old 6'1 guy with a medium-large frame build. When I first started out at 330, I told myself get to 180. No reason really other than it sounded nice? Once I realized how lean I was getting, I bumped it up to 185 as the target to hit. Then my PCP told me that he wants me to hover between 190 and 200. Now I am two weeks away from the goal I settled on which is 188. That number at 6'1 will put me in the normal BMI range. Which is going to mean a lot to me...a lot. Am I thin as hell? Yes and it feels freaking great. My metabolism really helped my *kitten* out. Not only is the last few pounds coming off quick, but at 193, I lost 7 pounds in two weeks at this weight. Plus walking a minimum of 8+ miles a day helps.
But I definitely changed my goals. Three times1 -
Thanks for all the great responses - very helpful!0

Well, as a follow up to this thread, I ended up in a boot/aircast for over 6 months due to Achilles and not cleared for exercise/walking yet. On top of it major stress in my life and caregiving to sister who needed surgery has got me not making best nutritional choices (Trying, but still giving in to those foods that bring comfort versus nutrition)... Need to get back to healthy eating.
Need to re-adjust weight goals again - back to 128-132! (125 was too low and not maintainable).
Would like to be ideally 128-130. Currently fluctuating between 132-134, which is not comfortable for me.
Advice on re-setting and re-startng to get back to healthier weight? My physical and stress-related circumstances do not look as tho they will change anytime soon so need to learn to cope and eat healthier in this situation.
Thx Jean
PS I'm 5'7" and have been in remission off and in for a few years so my activity fluctuates with my health.2 -
I'm not in maintenance yet but I've adjusted my goal down.
At my highest weight (227lbs) my goal was 145lbs. That wasn't even considering my interest in a firm lightly muscular look and technically not within a normal bmi range for my petite self.
Now (174lbs) my goal is 135 with muscles. That's on the very high end of a normal bmi.
Really though, I would be thrilled to have either a 4 or 3 as my second number. Both sound great, particularly if I'm looking great too.0 -
6'-2" 57 year old male. My first goal was rather innocent: just stop gaining weight after my back surgery. I slowly did that for 6 to 7 months. Then I started logging to see just how much food I was eating at 360 pounds. Yikes...a lot of 6000 calorie days, sometimes more....much more. So I set a goal of 2500 calories without setting a weight loss goal. Bought a scale and started out using Calorie Count which is now offline and how I found MFP. When I cleared 300 I was very happy and reset my first goal at 275. Hit that and reset to 250. You see the pattern here. Eventually I had to my calories to 2000 daily goal after stalling. My new goal was to hit 200 pounds....a high school weight I remember well. Took a long time and stalled for months but hung in there at 2000 calories and finally hit my goal in February, 2017. Woo-hoo!!! MFP reset my calories at 1710....this was too low so I reset at 1800 calories. My final goal is to clear 190 and I am 6 pounds shy of that goal. Not bad for a 4 year journey. I am stalled for now but I cannot go less...my daily calories are ranging between 1800-2000 which MFP says is still below maintenance. It may take the rest of this year to lose the final 6 pounds and I am okay with that....heck, if my steady state stays at 196 I am okay with that too but I am still eating at a deficit and would like to see movement however slight it may be. Sooooo close to my "normal" BMI range...first time EVER.5

Down
After I hit goal (75 pounds down in 18-months)...my body shape slowly changed to where I was not happy with it. This took maybe 6-9 months for the aha moment to occur. Dropping 5 more pounds worked.1 -
Down. My first goal was a normal BMI. I had to lose 50 pounds to get there.
Hit that goal and set another goal, to lose another 12 pounds. Then I'll reevaluate.0 -

Sounds like you've been through a lot!
I'm 5'7" and maintaining in a range of 128-133, so very similar!
I've had to re-set at times due to health problems (I have MS). I would probably try another maintenance calculator to get a feel for calories at your lower activity level, continue to log everything and then adjust accordingly. And also make sure you take time for self-care (and when dealing with the stress, have a list of stress relievers/comforts other than food). Best of luck to you!0 -
My original goal was 150 (from 178). I achieved that within just a few months and knew quickly it wasn't going to cut it so I set my next goal to 130. I'm now at 128 and have been for about 2 years. I wouldn't mind getting down to 122-125 but I'm in no hurry. I should focus on adding in some lifting but it intimidates me and I would have to let go of some cardio- which makes me nervous.0

I revised my goal band up from 130-135 lbs to 135-140 lbs on advice from my GP. I've found it way more easier to stay within the new target levels.1

I am 5'0", 70, and weigh 135. At maintenance for 3 years. I work out 5 days a week, cardio, Pilates, strength training. I revised my goal from 130 to 135. I was unable to sustain the 130 without being pretty miserable. I did try to get back down to 130 after being at maintenance for a year. It was slow, hard, and draining. I was not happy at all. I weighed 110 in my younger years (I have a muscular build from the waist down, so was pretty small even at that weight). I knew that 110 was not reasonable for my age and build. I wear a Petite Small in everything, and am able to maintain very easily at this weight. Bottom line, it's not the number, it's your health, and how you feel.4

I am tempted to drop goal weight down to 155.(I'm a 5'5" male who has weighed as much as 200lbs) I am down to 165 after an original weight of 191 and a goal of 175. I want to give it a go for 6 months and just keep the goal at maintaining weight. I would be happy if 5 or more years from now I could simply say that my weight has never been over 170 from today forward.0

28, 5'10, started out at 220lbs nearly two years ago.
I kinda picked out 154lbs arbitrarily as it was smack bang in the middle of the healthy weight range for my height and I got there surprisingly quick. About 7 or 8 months. I gained back about 12lbs due to stress and travel, and I felt really uncomfortable with the way I looked and so when I got back down to 154 I realised I still wasn't happy with my body. I carry all my excess weight around my stomach so technically I was still at risk for problems as my measurement at my belly button was still larger than 32in (for women, 35 for men). So I kept losing. I mostly maintain at 146-147 at the moment as I'm trying to recomp my body and it's going pretty well.
I think a lot of it has to do with frames as well, which you can't necessarily see when you're obese like I was. I mean I wouldn't have said at my highest weight that I'm particularly small framed but with a wrist circumference of less than 6in, I am. So, to look and feel lean, I prefer/need to be on the lower end of the scale so adjustments needed to be made.0 -
I'm 5'2. I weighed _ _when I became pregnant and was _ _ _when I got out of the hospital. My original goal was to get back to _ _but have come to terms with the realization I like my body better at _ _. All my old clothes still fit so I'm just going to hang out here and maintain. Someone once reported me on this site for posting my actual weight, they said I was a "trigger" (not even sure what that means). My point is, I ended up choosing a higher number than my original goal.0

Congratulations on your success. When I went into maintenance my original goal weight was 220 pounds I would have been perfectly happy at that. screwed maintenance up totally and I went down to 204. For a while I thought what would it look like if I drop to199 or less. But the more I thought about it I didn't like how I looked at 204 I was skinny fat lost a lot of weight had flabby skin no muscle definition.
I decided to lift and currently my weight is around 208. I don't want to sound vain, but I like the way I look in the mirror. Weight is just a number. I think it's more important and I've read this on numerous posts, I think it's more important that you like what you see when you look in the mirror instead of your weight. Weight is just a number or an indicator but it doesn't reflect who you are and how you feel about yourself.

I haven't yet, but its something I've been thinking of. At 5'7 I really wanted to get to 130. I'm 3 pounds away, a 0-2 depending on brand, but man oh man my body is being really stubborn getting there. I've been thinking about getting down to 125 , with a maintenance range of 125-130, but I don't know that my body will let me get there without really sacrificing life balance0
-
My original goal weight was 125, my wedding weight. As I've lost though, I've pushed it down to 115, so if my weightlifting pushes me back up, it shouldn't push me out of a normal BMI.0

Well it’s been a few years since I started this thread. And a lot of changes.
Still caregiving but more intense round-the-clock for my elderly Mom.
Weight crept up over these years so I’m looking to lose again - new GW 135 with optimal weight 132 if possible.
Starting with adding regular exercise - tricky with this schedule but excited to find a way to make it work. Will exercise at home.
And need to adjust calories down. Tho still need enough calories for the energy it takes to
Caregive. It’s fairly demanding at this point.
Mom needs to gain weight so I make her a lot of higher calorie foods. But rest of us need lower than that. So need to resist the sweets!
Okay, here we go! I’m committing to losing this weight and getting back to maintenance.
Wish me luck!
Jean

I hope you can figure out a way to get some respite help for a couple hours a week.
Recharge.
Oxygen mask on yourself first and all that...3 -
I’m about 30lbs less than my original goal but got here unintentionally. After reaching my intended goal nearly 10 years ago, I then lost approximately another 15lb trying to find my maintenance calories. Then I stayed at roughly the same weight til lockdown, and when I started walking, without increasing calories, I lost about another 15lbs. I’m possibly lighter than I should be but find it difficult to intentionally put on weight, after spending most of my adult life struggling with my weight, so I’m sticking where I am for now.5

Jean, I'm new to the community, and this is such a helpful post. Thank you for starting it all those years ago.
I relate to you regarding the caregiving. I recently lost my mom after a decade of caring for her in my home. I feel privileged to have gone through it, but it undeniably takes a toll - physically and mentally. I wish you joy and satisfaction through your caregiving journey.
I am not at maintenance yet, but I'm already thinking about it because it's not that far off.
I'm 63, 5'10", fine framed, current weight 162, and my current goal weight is 145. I think this would suit me, but if I decide it's too thin I plan to revise up to 155.
Again, thank you for starting this thread. Wishing you all the best.3 -

Susan,
Thanks for your post. It sounds like 155 would be a great weight for you! But only you know how you feel so trust yourself.
Always here to help cheer you on. Going back to weight loss for about 5 pounds.
I’m 2 years into full time caregiving with my Mom living at my house. Prior to that was 7 years caring for Mom and Dad at their home while also caring for my sister at her home. It was exhausting but also was a true honor. I miss my Dad.
Best,
Jean

Yes. I moved my maintenance weight up 5 lbs. in my 20s, 30s, and 40s I liked myself at 140 at 5’ 9”.
But when I got to that weight at 62, it made my face look sunken. My husband told me and then I saw in a photo. So, I gained back 5 lbs and I now have been maintaining at 145-147 for 10 months now.2 -
Frankiesgirlie,
Sounds like a good and attractive maintenance weight for you!
I’m 5’7’ and 63. These days if at 130-133 my face looks sunken. Not a good look. So I adjusted weight up. Currently 140 and trying to get back to 135.
