I have been a diabetic for a while, but I have been experiencing a loss of control with A1c of 7.7 in January. I am taking 500 ER Metformin 2 x a day and recently added 25 mg of Jardience, which has the added benefit of lowering my cardiovascular events. I have A-fib and have 1 stroke in 2014. I recently met with a Registered Dietician who recommended the my plate method and for weight loss a reduced consistent carb diet along with 30 min of exercise daily. I have 3 meals of 30 carbs each, 3-4 oz. of proteins, and 1 fat exchange, and 1 snack of 1 carb and 1 protein. This will help me lose weight.
I once was 220 lbs but am 177 lbs currently. I starved myself to lose that weight and it wrecked havoc with my diabetes and muscle loss. My next 50 lbs I want to change my whole lifestyle.
Tell me your story and goals. I will post something daily regarding my journey.3 -
Hello, and welcome!
My story: I was age 59, class 1 obese when I joined MFP. I had high cholesterol and high blood pressure, but had not yet developed diabetes. (Diabetes is not common in my family, and I had started exercising regularly in my late 40s, which I suspect may've helped avoid that.) I lost to a healthy weight in just under a year, and have been at a healthy weight (and same jeans size) since, now age 68. Both becoming more active and reaching a healthy weight were huge quality of life improvements for me. My goals now are mainly to keep my weight in a healthy range long term, to stay active as long as I can, and to get overall reasonable nutrition along the way.
I wish you success, and will look forward to reading your updates!0 -
My story was that I was a very thin and active teen. Once I started having kids I gained LOTS of weight. I gained more than 70 lb. with my first pregnancy and then couldn't get it off. In my 30s I began eating healthier and started running and cycling each week. I went from 185 to 130 and maintained it. Then in my early 40s I began having chronic pain and began working full-time. My weight started increasing. I have been up and down a few times since then mostly due to poor food choices and chronic pain that limits my activity. More recently in the past two years I have had other health issues that contribute to weight gain like IBS and joint problems.
I have now adopted a diet that helps my health problems and keeps them in check. I use portion control to help with being able to stay within my calorie goals and gradually lose weight. I have experimented with alternative exercises that I know can help me stay active without causing me pain.
I'm down 17 pounds since January and I keep slowly moving downward. I am four pounds away from my first weight loss goal of reaching 150. Then I aim to get to 140 which I think is manageable to maintain.1
