I eat a ton of peanut butter everyday and I was wondering if this might be harming my weight-loss. will peanut butter make me overweight? I know it has a lot of calories per tablespoon so......
Thanks!!

if you eat enough of it such that you're going over what you burn in a day...yes it will make you gain weight. Otherwise, no, not so much.

That all depends. I workout a ton so peanut butter is a good way for me to up my calories. If you are overweight and are trying to lose a large amount, I'd probably cut back. :-)

No i'm normal weight but im just trying to maintain :)
  • As long as it fits your daily calories you will be fine, I LOVE peanut butter and I eat it daily...on toast, shakes, out of the jar...I even mix it with my ice cream for a treat every now and then.

Peanut butter has good fats. If you stay in your calorie goal you will maintain your weight. Enjoy it on fruit or veggies if you are worried. I love PB on Apples, celery and carrots.....a spoon! Gooood stuff. You should try Almond Butter. Yum!

It's calories in, calories out each day. If you are logging every bit of peanut butter and meeting your goals it's not a problem. It's a good source of protein and is pretty close to a whole food source.

You could also try almond butter instead once in a while.

Just don't eat the whole jar.

What goes on between a grown man and a consenting jar of natural peanut butter behind closed doors is not of anyone's concern except their own, ok?

I'm in the same boat too!!love it to death, I ate a whole jar of it last week over a 4 day span :(
  • Nothing wrong with peanut butter. I found that my serving portions were off (what I thought was 1 tablespoon was actually 2, so I was going a bit over on calories), so I found Better 'n Peanut Butter which has 100 calories per serving. You can also try PB2 in shakes... it is soooo good.

I would say good, if you are not going over on calories and you are eating enough other food to get proper nutrition.

I would say bad if either of those things are not true.
  • Is that a metric ton or inperial? just ran a Tonne through MFP & it came to 6,000,003 calories that should give you quite a formiddable booty, seriously though eat enough of ANYTHING & it will make you fat, if it fits within your numbers it will be OK if not it wont.

I have peanut butter practically every day.....the fats in peanuts are good fats. You will be fine as long as you stay in your calorie range.

Also, its a good source of protein!

From my perspective, and I LOVE peanut butter, it depends on the type of peanut butter.
Unfortunately Jif is the worst (and best tasting!) peanut butter for you. Now I'm just talking the creamy stuff. The "natural" isn't much better.. It's just because of the oils they use to preserve it, and the extra sugars added.
Peanut butter is a higher percent fat than it is protein, but like someone mentioned, it does have good fats.

I switched to an all natural peanut butter from Trader Joes (or any farmers market/whole foods place works) and I saw a bit of a drop in my weight. It's only two ingredients are peanuts and salt.. and it needs to be refrigerated because it lacks preservatives.
like you.. I eat peanut butter ALL of the time.
I also bought some sugar free strawberry preserves to get that delicious PB&J :)

Sooo.. it's up to you! I think everyone has great points.. Peanut butter is DELICIOUS and I definitely wouldn't recommend not eating it. But, the natural stuff, in my opinion, is delicious too. So I can enjoy it without feeling guilty.

I LOVE peanut butter too, just check my diary for proof! I just make sure to fit it into my calorie and macro allotment, and it's all good :)

well, its going to get pricey in the very near future............cost of peanuts is going thru the wall

I live in S. Texas, and all the peanut butter farmers have their plants producing only about 1/3 of their normal harvest.........the drought has devasated parts of the south west US, and local farmers are really taking a loss...........

watch the price of peanut butter and see if its going up in your area............might wanna cut back some, save you some money as well as some cals,............best wishes, Lloyd
  • Im right there with you!
I L-O-V-E peanut butter, & here the past couple of weeks I seem to be craving it more so< so I have to watch my intake. But there are a lot of benefits to peanut butter, especially if you get the all natural kind. Good fats, high protien, & high in potassium, more than in a banana. (which may be why Im craving it so much, since Ive had muscle cramps Im thinking Im low in my potassium intake)
Like everything else ... moderation, but PB isnt as bad for you as you might think.
(my new fav Peter Pan All Natural Honey roast!... high side on calories but OMG its so good!)

    Have a great day!

I'm a peanut butter freak. I can eat up to 4 tbsp of it a day and I'm steady losing the 1/2 lb per week I set myself for. Make sure you are using correct measurements.

Super sad about the cost of PB projected to rise :(

ME TOO, well 5 1/2 days!

I realized a new "think" recently. READ THE INGREDIENTS.

Last weekend, I was looking at two peanut butter jars: Natural vs. reduced fat. Natural was more expensive. Everything else considered: calories, sugar, fat, protein, they were very similiar.

However, I learned this week to read the ingredients in food. You know my reduced fat peanut butter had sugar and vegetable oil labeled as the first couple of ingredients! I try to stay away from oil and especially the bad oil. But I generally will try to stay away from all oils because of the calories. No, I don't care what anyone says about olive oil.. it's the calories in and calories out, but you shoudl also read the ingredients.

I wonder what the natural peanut butter has for ingredients.. I think just peanuts! I'm going to check it out and probably buy it this weekend. I'm sure I'll miss the sugar though! lol.
