I am having minor surgery next week and was advised not to exercise for at least a week following this procedure....I am at a losss..... I was wondering if anyone would have suggestions for small exercises- the procedure is being done on my lower half of the body- so I guess I was figuring I could still manage to exercise a bit above the waist? Is this too ambitious of me...or should I just go with the dr and not exercise at all? I just don't want to sit around recouperating-which is only supposed to take a few days, and gain a bunch of weight back. Sorry for babbling....

I would do what the doctor says and avoid exercising. As long as you are watching your calories, a few days won't make much of a difference. You need to do what is best for your overall health, not just the weight loss aspect :) Good luck!

Don't do any exercise during that time but make sure you stay at or below maintenance calories so you don't gain any weight. To see what your maintenance cals are go to goals and look at the top right "calories burned from normal daily activity" that is your maintenance.

I've had surgery before that required me to not exercise for 3 weeks. Its very hard on you emotionally but you really need to do what the dr. says.

You're not going to gain a bunch of weight in a few days.

    Listen to your doctor. :flowerforyou:
  • ^^ what they said. Listen to your doctor. Watch your diet. You will not gain a bunch of weight if you just eat wisely.

    Best wishes to you :flowerforyou:

I agree with what Kiya said. Its in your best interest to do what the doctor said.

Too much movement, or exersion could cause serious injuries depending on what type of surgery you had. For example, internal stitches could break open causing damage, bleeding and increased risk of infection.

You won't gain back much weight in a few days even if you went hog wild and ate every bit of crap you could get your hands on, so if you keep following your diet plan, and eat healthily and stay with your calorie limits you'll be just fine.

Also, no matter what you do, a few days after the surgery you may find a small increase on the scale. This will be due to fluid retention because of the trauma of the surgery to your body and will go away in a week or two afterwards. (even minor surgery is trauma to the body)

You'll be in good health and back to your regular exercise schedule in no time.

I was in the same situation in June. Lower abdomen and 2 week restriction. I was able to do light walking or sitting in a chair upper body exercises such as Wii boxing. Good luck.
  • Obey the doctors orders. Although your surgery is lower body, it affects the entire body. I just had lower body surgery not long ago (August). Recuperation from the sugery was 3-4 days but I felt it for over a week. Watch your calories and you should be okay.

Only do what your doctor allows you to do. Just because you think you are only engaging the upper body doesn't mean you aren't indirectly engaging the lower. Just adjust your calorie target for those days to losing weight while being sedentary - that may be just sticking to 1200 cal/day - and take time to rest and recover properly. You'll be back to exercising again in no time without risking further injury or complication that may delay your recover further. A week isn't going to destroy your progress as long as you are paying attention to your nutrition.

I am smack dab in the middle of a two week restriction due to minor surgery. The location is such that any movement of my core impacts the stitches. I am allowed to walk slowly though. It is hard. My husband has agreed to play word games with me during my regular at home/exercise times. I have also set up a jig saw puzzle. I make myself spend 45 minutes a day at it. I decided to hone in on my salt/potassium ratios. In lieu of exercise as a contribution to my overall fitness, I decided integrating new and better habits with regard to salt would be a good offset (and for those who care, yes I fight high blood pressure). I want to be fit and healthy partially so that when I need to I am in the best shape possible to help my body fight off traumas (which I consider minor surgery to be). I am not going to contradict my dr. in any way. I will not exercise, but I will stay active alert and focused on good health.

thank you to everyone. I agree with you...I just tend to be stubborn and fearful- I am doing really well right now with getting healthy and don't want this to stop. I had a situation a few months ago and broke my foot as I was just beginning to change my habits. Big setback. Thanks for the support and reassurance. This will mean a lot of discipline on my part. If I am not busy- I get bored and run to food. I am going to need to be creative! Hey if you want to give me some creative activities to fill my day-that would be so awesome...I occasionally watch movies, read, search internet, and play piano. Not much besides this. I have 2 small dogs that fill a lot of my time because I go around providing pet therapy to different places- not while I'm recovering though. And luckily I will have a day or so off of work. ....You guys and gals are so helpful--I am so grateful for the support...It really helps:)
