Errors in Fat Grams

I’m a retired dietitian I’ve noticed that total fat gram calculations are wrong Total fat is the sum of saturated mono & poly fat plus trans fat. Today total fat was 32 grams over those amounts or almost 300 calories wrong

Where was the error? The data base here is membership loaded and errors are pretty much a given.

The majority of the food database is entered by users, and very often they will only enter the total fat amounts and not the sub-set fats (which are not compulsory to when creating a food, and are often not on labels). So the entries will add total fat grams, but not populate the mono & poly or trans fat so that data is not in the database.

If you are in the US, food labels are only required to list total fat, sat fat and trans fat. Mono and polyunsat fats are voluntary so are usually missing on the typical label so wouldn't be entered in the MFP database.

MFP doesn't calculate the total fat count - it's simply a data field like any other that is entered by the user.
