My grandma is diabetic (the type where you can't have sugar) would she be okay having splenda or will that still be harmful?
Are there any UK sweetners that she can have?

Splenda is fine. It is sugar-free, carb free. I don't know what sweeteners are available in the UK, but in the US there's Sweet & Low/saccharin, Equal/aspartame, Splenda, and stevia/Truvia.0

She should be weary of Splenda or any of the artificial sweeteners. Not only are they not healthy, but in many people who are diabetic, they cause a rise in blood sugar levels.
They do that to me and I was told that some people's bodies have the same response to artificial sweeteners as they do consuming regular sugar.0 -
Info from the American Diabetes Association-

I am Diabetic and I would never adhere to what the ADA has to say on their website. They are backed by too many food manufacturers and have gotten away from being a true medical association.
Everything they try to sell you is for some other big food conglomerate.0 -

Amen! Same here, I ditched their recommendations and in 5 months went from a 6.7 A1C to 5.8.0 -

I have heard this same thing from Drs, too.0 -
I am diabetic, too. I can use splenda without any problems. I find some others have a stonger aftertaste. Aspartame makes me more hungry. So it is just a matter of what is available for her, and how she physically responds to them.0

I agree with the above to stay away from artificial sweeteners. I would suggest if she's going to use something other than sugar, ONLY use pure stevia. It is a plant extract and the only sweetener I know of that isn't a chemical like Splenda (aka sucralose), aspartame or saccharin. I am an insulin dependent diabetic and use stevia every day with no side effects. It has only a few carbs per packet. Both Splenda and aspartame can have a large range of terrible side effects. I get migraines and my underarm and neck glands swell terribly if I eat or drink things with these chemicals.0
