Hibernation instinct...I feel it starting...

The weather is cold and it's gloomy and my yard is covered in the yellow leaves from my neighbours huge *kitten* tree...and my energy is dropping, and I'm getting sleepier, and lazier, and hungrier. I'm not a bear, why do I want to gorge myself and then go to bed until May of next year???

Even though I'm a pretty upbeat person by nature and I know much of this is psychological, and I can overcome it that way too, it still makes the battle even tougher to fight.

Does anybody from a more moderate climate want house guests for the next few months? I consider myself pretty easy to get along with most of the time.

I get the winter blues every year. only for me its the winter depression and anxiety I have to pump up on vit D and B12 also I tan to get that warmth I crave. I keep a gratitude journal and try to be more active in my community that way it keeps me out of my house.

I know what you mean, yesterday it was cloudy and a lot cooler here than it had been, and I could feel the need to snuggle up and snack/eat an entire rack of ribs setting in.

Luckily it's a lot warmer today. Still, winter is coming...

Have you ever mentioned this to your doctor? It very well might be seasonal affective disorder. A light machine can help if that's the case. You'd be suprised how many people I know that suffer from this and have had great results with artificial light. Worth asking about.
  • OMGosh...I am sooo there with you! The gloom & doom have taken over and I feel like I am constantly hungry. Must beat the Momma Bear Blues!

I usually take advantage of cold weather to produce warmth via body heat. Vigorous body heat.

I think it is quite natural for humans to want to retreat back into the cave, pull the furs over you and eat all those sugary berries you picked during the fall. Or as we brits call it Autumn.

BTW it is 29 degrees in Britain today hottest day since records began apparently, unusually hot for Sept/Oct. Lovely.

I'm the opposite...I hibernate in summer. When the weather starts to cool down, that's when I start getting a hankering for going out. Ren Fests, Corn Mazes, Zoo, dog park...all that fun stuff. It's too suffocatingly hot in the summer to leave my house.

I don't have a/c. It's too suffocatingly hot NOT to leave my house. lol

At least my misery has company, not that I'm glad anyone else finds winter tough.

I'm quite sure there is a SAD component to it..by January I feel I almost insanely seeking out light...I start not caring about the hydro bill and leaving the light on in the room I'm in and the adjoining rooms. lol I know regular light isn't what I need, but it doesn't stop me from trying. Crazy, eh? I've always thought about getting the UV lights but they're pretty pricy. Though you just made me think to ask the doctor...maybe they might partially be covered by insurance?

Well, I can't change the season ahead, so I'm going to try to let MFP be my support to stay motivated through it (while secretly hoping a nice guy from a warm place will fall in love with me and take me away from Northern Ontario. )

I just did a Wii Dance game and got pretty warmed up! If you're talking about another sort of vigorous...well, not much opportunity for that lately. Sad really. :ohwell:
