WTH? Confused...

So, I was down to 43 lbs lost on Friday!!! Super excited!!! Saturday I hit the gym, plus we went on a 1.75 hour walk Saturday evening. I barely ate much of anything, in fact I had like 1600 calories left to eat (it was my birthday, we had family in town, plus all the exercise gave me a huge overage).

Yesterday, I didn't go to the gym but I did manage to get in some exercises. I watched what I ate and figured I'd be alright because of my huge negative the day before.

I got on the scale this morning and I'm 3 lbs heavier... :noway:

How on earth can this be possible? I know that I didn't drink near enough water Saturday, so I upped my intake yesterday and have been peeing like crazy today. I'm thinking it's probably water retention, but I thought that things would even out between Saturday and Sunday's exercise/eating habits.

Thoughts?

It's water and or muscle. Same thing happened to me last week. Cut down your sodium for a couple of days. You're fine!

Too much exercise and not enough food--that can make you gain weight. You should always try to eat near your target intake each day. Plus, the lack of water probably didn't help.

With all the excercise you have had lately, perhaps its more muscle? Or daily fluxuation? did you weigh yourself at the same time of day? I forget what i heard the daily fluxuation in our weight is, but i am pretty sure somewhere between 1-4 lbs...Just a thought.

Can't see your diary - but it was birthday weekend, correct? So I am betting there were adult beverages. That and sodium will get ya every time. Yes - very likely water weight.

Remember - it takes an additional 3500 calories OVER your BMR to gain an actual pound of fat.

Probably water weight from sodium. I wouldn't worry too much. You will most likely level off in a day or two.
  • Definitely agree about not eating enuff...that's happened to me...eat AT LEAST 1,200 cals a day...

I've actually had the same exact thing happen over a weekend where I was careful with my eating and exercised heavily. As to what caused it? It could have been too much sodium, too many carbs, or your workouts could have caused your muscles to retain water. It can also be a monthly thing. I always retain a few pounds of water a few days before starting my period. We all know you didn't really gain 3 pounds of fat, so it'll go away on its own, probably as fast as it appeared.

It's definitely not more muscle. Most women will gain fewer than 5 lbs. of muscle in their LIFETIME unless seriously training with olympic weights.

You will fluctuate. I fluctuate as much as 6 lbs. some days. Usually it's 2-3. Relax and watch your long-term trends. It will go down.

Make sure you're eating enough (eat your exercise calories! MFP factors the deficit in FOR YOU) and hydrating. Have fun.

Are your muscles sore from your workouts? Sore muscles tend to sort of "soak up" the water you give your body in order to repair themselves, so often if your muscles are sore your scale will be up due to excess water weight. Don't worry, it will all work itself out!

You know, my sodium was kind of high yesterday; more than ever actually... I didn't think about that. Thanks!

Really? I didn't know that! Wow, and here I was thinking that stepping it up on Saturday so I could have some drinks would be a good thing... <sigh>

Yes, same time of day. I'm going to just shrug it off and see what happens later this week. Not going to count it either

Yes, there were adult beverages :drinker: The sodium thing I always forget about.

Thanks! I sure do hope so!

Thanks y'all! :flowerforyou: I guess I'll wait this one out and see what happens near the end of this week.

You know what... you might have something there. When we did the walking tour (it was a ghost tour) my legs were hurting when I climbed into bed. I do a lot of walking, but this was intense.

This exact thing happened to me. Makes you feel like you didn't accomplish anything. I know I don't drink enough water, but I try. But I stayed on point with my eating, and I've done some excercise every night. Mostly rotating Zumba, and walking.

Absolutely awesome article! Thank you so much for sharing!!! I had no clue about the glycerin part of the equation..
  • I guess I'm not going to be as positive as the other responders. Maybe because this same thing is happening to me and it's just so frustrating. I've been stuck at essentially the same weight for the past 6 days; give or take a few ounces (usually more), This is despite the fact that I've been walking more, drinking more than 8 glasses of water per day, and staying at 1200 calories per day. When I started this "lifestyle change" I was told that if I ate less calories than I burned on a daily basis I would lose weight And I did lose 10 pounds in the first 5 weeks. But now I'm stuck and it's very frustrating. Now, I hear, "it's too much fat", or it's "water retention", or "it's too much salt" or it's "muscle weight" or its "too many carbs". A process that was initially described to me as uncomplicated; "burn more calories than you eat", has now become very complicated and I honestly don't know how to get the balance I need to actually lose weight. Yes, I am eating more vegetables and fruits than I ever did and those things are at least 50-60 percent of my calores consumed every day. Does anyone have a daily food consumption and activity plan that will actually work? The "burn more calories than you consume" is certainly not working for me. Thanks

You can't say it's not working after being stuck for only 6 days. That's NOT "stuck". I weighed the same for as long as a month, multiple times, but I've lost an average of about 6.7 lbs./month for 9 months. You have to be patient. 6 days is like a nanosecond in weightloss time. Don't be surprised if you find yourself "stuck" for days or weeks every now and again. You may even...gasp!...GAIN! But it's all temporary. Trust me on this. :)

This happens all the time, just bad timing with water retension, maybe too much sodium or your body worrying when you didnt eat enough calories. No worries, just drink lots of water and IM sure you'll be back down 3 and more very soon!.

Not only this^^ but, have you been taking your measurements? I know that I've been "stuck" several times since I've started here in March and for much longer than 6 days. During that time, I didn't lose pounds, and even gained a few back, but was overall losing inches. If you're eating right and working out, your body changes composition; fat is exchanged for muscle which doesn't show a loss in weight, but does show a loss in inches. Now, I'm not saying that you're exchanging all of it that way, but I'm sure there's a little going on. You could also be retaining water due to sodium intake or your period or sore muscles. Often, you'll see no loss for a few days and then "whoosh" a few pounds disappears nearly overnight. Weight loss is not a linear line on a graph for anyone.

Before you get too discouraged, take your body measurements using a tape measure and track them in the check in area where you record your weight. It doesn't really matter where you measure as long as you do it in the same places each time. I'd suggest the smallest part of your waist, the largest part of your hips and your thighs. You might also measure your belly (over your belly button, obviously), bicep area, your neck, and your bust.

Keep your chin up and keep working it. It'll happen!
