Out of shape and New Years resolutions.

For those out of shape and making a New Years resolution to get in shape I offer a suggestion;
Join a big box gym with a three month introductory membership.
Get on a treadmill. Set the speed for for 3-3.5mph and set the elevation to maintain a constant Zone 2 Aerobic heart rate 220 - age X 70%. Do this everyday for 60 minutes. It will be boring so bring headphones for music/podcasts or just daydream and watch other people.
In 3 months you should loose 10-15 pounds and strengthen you heart considerably. Most importantly the anaerobic exercise will boost the Mitochondria ATP in every cell of your body allowing them to process fats for energy more efficiently.
After three months will be in better shape to transition to a more enjoyable form of exercise like organized sports, martial arts, palates, running, CrossFit, bodybuilding, etc...
I followed this path about five years ago and continued to be active ever since. Even after a major illness I an in better shape than I was a 30. This year on my birthday I completed the One Punch Man workout in honor of my grandsons' favorite Japanese Magma Superhero; 10K run, 100 pushups, 100 setups, and 100 Squats, all in 109 minutes. Not bad for a guy collecting Social Security.

not a bad plan IF those walks put you in a calorie deficit!1

Just as important, walking is far less impactful on joints than running. Incline walking is an excellent alternative to running. As a bodybuilder, it's my cardio of choice to get in heart work without impacting muscular development.3
