LESS Alcohol ~ JANUARY 2025 ~ One Day at A Time

@globalhiker I actually had to have my knee replacement. My knee wobbled when I walked. My neighbor once said, "Wear your brace. You should see what I see." And, my brother came to visit. I hadn't seen him in about four years. We have a restaurant right around the corner from our house. I was walking in front. My brother said, "You should apply for Social Security disability". It was that noticeable. After knee replacement, they tell you not to run (one doctor told me unless I have to get out of the way of a bus 🙂), or engage in high-impact exercise or sports, and to avoid shear movements (I believe he meant rotational movements like in tennis).
I still don't have an AF day this month. But, I set my goals up for 27 AF days and 4 A days. It may end up 5 A days though. We'll see! Like I've said before, once I quit I can't start up again. It just doesn't work out for me.
Oh...you shouldn't be afraid of x-rays. I've had many. I once told a technician wheeling me from from the CAT scan room. I told him that I can't believe that I've had so much imaging done. He said, "Well, if you start growing a third arm, don't worry...It's normal!"4 -
@MissMay a big thank you for starting us off for another month and even better, the brand new year!
@SunnyDays930 so great to see you here again! You sound determined to take on your goals. I know what you mean about wanting to lose the lbs. and you’re right, the wine calories are too often not worth it. I will read the article today, thanks.
@forestdweller1 oh there’s nothing like Baltimore Maryland crabs for sure! Good to see you back for January.
@xbowhunter way to have accountability for yourself and come back. We’re all in this together. Happy New Year!
@globalhiker you have demonstrated that you are better than ever heading to 60!
@SparkSpringtime69 I’ll be trying the alcohol removed Mionetta sparkling wine I bought this week. Happy to see you back here.
Welcome newcomers and/or returning LA friends from 2024 - Everyone sounds motivated to make the effort to take better care of ourselves in this new year, me included!7 -
@SurferGirl1982 you have created some pretty hefty AF goals for yourself! It sounds like you have a targeted AF day this week, how wonderful!4
-
@Michieb125 I was planning to have my first AF day this Sunday 1/5. It's a bit difficult. But, once I get a day or two in AF, it's pretty easy from there. Then I hope to be AF for the rest of the year. There's other things that I can drink that don't contain alcohol...unsweetened iced tea, sparkling water with cucumber, lemon, or lime, or just filtered water.
@globalhiker I just remembered something. You would have to see a orthopedic surgeon or sports doctor (you can ask your regular doctor for a referral. They tend to know who's best). But, I received cortisone shots in my knee. They will usually only give you two or three in your lifetime. I had three. It's hard to remember, but I think the first one helped quite a bit. And, the second one made me feel like I was a teenager. The third one didn't help at all (I saw a sports medicine doctor that time and he used ultrasound to put it in the right spot). I guess they work at first, but later don't. And, I believe you would have to get an x-ray. Also, my brother told me that they have some new treatments that don't require surgery. I would check it out if I were you. Maybe you can nip it in the bud before needing surgery. And, losing weight definitely helps.4 -
Listened to a mindful walking meditation in our foothills yesterday, and will again today. It’s always so good for my mental health.
Targets are in place for the week and month.

Day 3 is awesome @sunnydays930 - keep it going. I can't wait to read that article.
Wishing you well @SurferGirl1982 ~ I too know what you mean about drinking all day yet not feeling drunk. The other thing alcohol does is numb all your feelings.
Good to see you @xbowhunter
Welcome @its_cleo, @stepawayfromthetable, and @eahrenee and welcome back @looneycatblue and @pokey4321

Thanks @itladyee Yes, our bodies build up a tolerance. At one time, I thought that was a good thing.
But, it's not!
I'm working on getting Day 1 AF! It shouldn't be long. How are you doing with your goals?5 -
Thanks for the welcome.
I think I'm 3 days alcohol free? My first goal is date based to make it to after Jan 17 AF bc I have an MRI and other tests scheduled.
I feel like I'm swinging from wanting to over eat due to stress/anxiety to drink lol.
The weekend will be a bit hard. I used to a make a list of things to help-
-meditation for 2 mins
-some movement/ex (though bc I have injuries I am limited right now)
-go outside
-write for 5 or 10 mins
-make a list of reasons why not to drink/use
I thought I had more but cant think of any now.5 -
Happy New Year everyone!
I spent New Year's Day battling the worst hangover I have had in a long time, and I felt incredibly stupid. I just didn't realize how much I was drinking. I definitely did not intend to drink as much as I did. It was ridiculous if I'm being completely honest. I have no intentions of doing that again any time soon... or later for that matter.
So, after a full day of recovery and working today, I was finally able to read through all the posts. My goodness, you guys have been a very talkative group over the past couple days.
Since we're talking goals all around (and I did read the article), I have a few of my own.- Reduce my drinking. At this point, I probably won't drink until my birthday. And, I may not even drink then. I want to enjoy and remember it. So, I think I'm going to hold back.
- Get back to logging my calories. I haven't been doing it, and it's starting to show. It's a simple step that just keeps me in the right mindset. It's time to get back to it.
- Keep walking every day. I haven't walked in about a week, I think. I've been so busy with everything else, I just haven't found the time. Not only can my body feel it, but you can see it from the trash on the street. Someone's gotta pick up all that garbage!
- I also need to set a cleaning schedule and stick with it. I have neglected my house far too much, and I can't spend all day cleaning once or twice a month. I need to rotate the chores between weekends or something. I need to develop and implement the schedule. I also need to get my kids more involved with helping me do it.
With all that said...

Large meteor shower here tonight. Our local weatherman did the projections, math, calculations, and predicted how many meteors we should be able to see before dawn.....Exactly zero....Sky will be covered by clouds and falling snow. ❄️🥶 Temps will stay below freezing for at least the next week. Catpuccino and I love the wood stove. 😻🔥

@itladyee I have had that exact same feeling, hard to put a word to it. For me it's like I had a friend that didn't show up (or I didn't show up for it) and I'm not sure how to react to that. But I remind myself that the friend is really an enemy that's going to destroy my health and take over my time if I let it back into my evenings, or in my case, afternoons as also.7 -
hello all!
First weekend in January test starting today. I will be strong and resist the alcohol temptation... lol

Unfortunately, I know exactly what you mean, too. It is getting a little easier the more I try. If you had asked me one year ago if I could go even 2 days in a row without wine, I would have laughed in your face. My kids buy me gifts based on wine...nice gifts and gag gifts. It's just what I'm known for, and I can't say that I'm proud of it. I'm getting better. I don't know what my longest AF stretch has been so far...maybe 2-3 weeks, but that's far more than I ever thought I would do! Just keep replacing that nightly wine with something else, even if it's only a few nights a week. Pretty soon the AF nights start to feel as normal as the wine nights.
AF last night for me and no plans tonight for sure. I've been going to bed earlier which has allowed me to get up every morning this week and walk at least 2 miles on the treadmill. Two more weeks of that and it's supposed to be a habit, right?
Have a great weekend, all!

Welcome newbies and oldbies! Nice to see you one here, and happy to see people who used to be active in this thread back.
Really proud of myself how I handled New Years and the day after. Yesterday was wine night at work, I brought low alcohol wine, but had two glasses, which kind of defeated the purpose. I am buried at work, yesterday was super stressful, and as soon as the last patient left, I was like “pour me alcohol.”
I find that when I pray and meditate in the morning, it sets my day, but I’m not consistent with it, so I’m working on that. Also, as much as I do not want to go to the gym, I am dragging myself there. I get a little derailed when I can’t get into the classes I want. My work around is just getting to the gym and banging out a strength session. I could actually go downstairs and do the same thing at home.
Also logging my food. And staying on top of laundry, and finances. All things I do, but not consistently. I need to work on my discipline, no better way to do that than to just do it.
May we all meet our goals for this weekend!8 -
Last night was a bit challenging.
Husband came down at the witching hour and teasingly started whispering "Pomagranent Sour"... I just looked at him with quite the evil eye. Would I have loved one, yes. And there was part of me that said, well, you can just start after the weekend...which is what I normally would have done. But I said no. I told him I will have a drink to celebrate his birthday either on his birthday 1/8 or whenever he chooses to celebrate.
Then I proceeded to pour my 5 cal juice and was content.
@SparkSpringtime69
Excellent analogy, thank you!
@xbowhunter ~ you've got this. You're a pro
@chicbuc ~ Oh me too. I'm always teased about the wine. Even when I've talked about losing weight, friends have said, but you've got to give up the wine....and I've though, nope, somehow I'll manage. Well, that apparently has NOT worked....:)6 -
Day 2 AF for Jan. done. Background: I was trying to reduce drinking for 7 years. Each time I tried to moderate while dieting didn't work at all. I could not deal with slight hunger or food cravings AND cravings for wine. WAY too much deprivation for my brain to handle.
So back in September 2024 when I went AF cold turkey, I let myself try eating anything instead of drinking. I mean anything. Some days I dealt with my wine cravings by eating chips, other days it was ice cream and about every day it was also chocolate. High carb dinner every night. Snacks every afternoon. I should have gained 20 lbs. doing the math. Well, I lost 4 lbs. that month eating well over my calorie limit and eating anything OK. Then in October I continued AF and I lost 2 lbs.
This worked for me until December and I gained back 3 lbs. Now that I am in month 5 and have zero wine cravings I am introducing restricting calories and eating high nutrient foods.
You may think that eating junk and eating any quantity sounds very crazy, but it worked as a temporary solution to get me through the hard part!7 -

@NonnieDoiron It sounds like you have some pretty good goals in mind. When you mentioned the cleaning schedule...that's what I need. It's better to pick one or two tasks to do in a day than trying to tackle the whole house in one day. Maybe one or two days a week pick a chore or two. It would be so much easier.
Well, I will catch up with the rest of the posts later. This group has been very active this month...that's a good thing 🙂4 -
@globalhiker love your story to bring us up to speed on your LA / AF journey.
I too have allowed myself chips or whatever this week since I’m not having wine - it’s working while I adjust to a new mindset of skipping more A days.
For those of you who feel you are missing a friend or don’t know what to do, that has been me many times before as well. I think it’s very common from the literature I’ve read. For me, it usually passes when I am not too hard on myself and seek out other self care in that moment - go on a walk, breath work or even lay down and listen to a short positive affirmation. For me, I might also describe it as both a loss and opportunity to create something new and better.6 -
Tonight we have the grandkids overnight and I don’t have wine when they stay here but it’s also another planned AF day. Feeling so much better now after overdoing days during the holidays! You know that song, “ I can see clearly now”?
Current:
AF days - 3
A days - 05 -
OMG… the magical bottle appeared today. I still have a half a bottle behind it that was leftover from the 2 bottles I bought the Monday before New Year’s. I just got over the worse hangover I’ve had in a long time from drinking a bottle and a half in one night! I am NOT interested in drinking anything right now.
Wine devil!!! Get behind me, Satan!! UGH!9 -

@globalhiker That's the way to do it. For me or anyone that's trying to quit completely, I think it's best to get the drinking under control first. After that you can work on logging your foods, counting calories, eating more nutrient dense foods, exercise, and working on new projects or hobbies.
When I quit drinking in November of 2021, I wasn't logging my food or even exercising. But when I'm not drinking, I do tend to eat more nutritious foods. Just by not drinking, the weight fell off of me very quickly. I lost 30 or more pounds in three to four months without even trying.
I think this goes for most of us, but when we're drinking, we don't make the best food choices.
Anyways, like that article said, it best to work on one goal at a time and then go on to the next. I personally don't think you have to wait 3 months to move on to you next goal. But, as soon as your first goal becomes habit, then you can move on to the next.
Anyways, my January goal was to allow myself to drink through tomorrow, the 4th. I just hope I will be successful on Sunday. An old friend of mine used to say, "You just got to tough it out!".

*My house is full of alcohol. Huband purchased a huge 12 bottle online wine order (in case people stop over, YA RIGHT?!)
*There is still alcohol he purchased Dec 2023 in the frig from the same "in case people stop over" nonsense.
*He bought me a large bottle of prosecco for xmas.
the only wine I needed was 1/4 cup dry white for a recipe and it turned into 12bottles of mixed.....UGH the struggle is real.

I'm trying to manage both calorie and alcohol goals and it is definitely a challenge. But I feel like I am in a place I can do it- maybe!
Anyway check in- alcohol free today. No problem, it helps that I'm too exhausted to think heh.
I've got to go back and find the original goals I posted earlier this week though.8 -
