LESS Alcohol ~ JANUARY 2025 ~ One Day at A Time
Replies

AF tonight, had about 3 glasses of the Giesen dealcholized wine while finally catching up on budget stuff, which got pushed aside due to the holidays. As you can imagine, this doesn’t put me in the best mood because it’s tedious. I usually have wine, but you know what? The glass of the fake stuff let me enjoy my wine drinking ritual without actually having alcohol. Yay! My plan is NA until Thursday.
Had two drinks at brunch yesterday, but nothing last night.
Talking about how much time is lost to drinking, yowza! That is very eye opening! I’m definitely down for a nap when I can get one, for sure, but especially after I’ve had alcohol during the day.
Bravo on your AF budgeting.6 -
Michieb125 wrote: »Time becomes quite precious when you get to be my age, the other side of 60! The extra time we find without wine nights is glaringly real. AF last night and I made time for a hot bath with magnesium salts and listened to a mindful meditation to welcome the new year and new things. Very soothing. This weekend, I’ve reincorporated other short meditations with stretching exercises in my yoga room (aka grandkids play room). I also had one of the best nights of sleep all week!
So far, week one of reset (dryish) January is going well. Increasing days off and having longer stretches of NA is my main goal.
Current:
AF days - 4
A days - 1
To quantify - I gained 16 hours back to use for health and wellness in the last 4 days - woohoo!
Love this...the other side of 60.7 -

Was a little more tempted to drink last night, but I baked bread instead. Nothing better than the smell of fresh baked bread.
Had my interview yesterday, and I believe it went well. I don’t think it matters how well it went because the boss-lady wants me in the position because she knows I will do the job. I should find out today because they had 2 more interviews to
Fingers crossed for the out come you want from your interview 🤞

Setting up for success!!!
Goals for January - 85% Dry (AF = 26 A=5)
Monthly Stats - On Target
AF = 6 ~ 100 %
A = 0 ~ 0 %
Current Streak - AF = 6
Longest Streak - AF = 6
DH is killing me. He knows that I'm working on dry January and I’m easily tempted. He mentioned something the other day about having a spare lemon. Which means he wanted to make drinks. I just ignored him. Now he just reminded me that we have a bottle of egg nog in the refrigerator that we need to drink. I just looked at him.
I feel your frustration on this. My DH always tries to derail my AF goals.
We are stronger in numbers.

I am able to moderate now and drink occasionally if I want to without any fears of daily drinking again.

cheers!
Love your positivity. And your streak is amazing, even with a taste here or there.6 -
There is a whole lot of positivity in this discussion, and I'm here for it!
I did have wine last night (but less than "normal"). I almost didn't want to admit it, but I have learned just now from this thread, that yesterday is gone, and today is a new day. I did get up and get my treadmill walk in this morning which starts my day on a different plain. It helps me stay motivated to meet my nutritional goals and my AF goals. So here's to a better day today!
PS @SurferGirl1982 I love your stories...never stop rambling.5 -
One thing I find interesting is I lost my taste for full alcohol beer.
I do enjoy the NA variety but for some reason I can't get through a beer with alcohol.
I see this as a positive step forward.7 -
SunnyDays930 wrote: »@SurferGirl1982 Not everyone thrives in every environment. I would also be restless in circumstances such as yours. Perhaps make a plan, a list of small steps that you can do to work towards your goal of moving. Maybe start getting rid of stuff you don't need anymore. Declutter. If you own your property, start preparing it to go on the market. Don't overwhelm yourself, just do it one thing at a time. This would help fill your days with something other than drinking and give you a purpose. I myself always have lots of excuses of why I can't do this or that, but I am working hard on that this year. It isn't always easy but I am attempting it anyway.
Absolutely this! I’d add finding someplace to volunteer, like the hospital or a nursing home. Or a little part time job-something to fill your days.4 -
Morning - Here’s to embracing your improved health and happiness today! The precious present.
Tried another dealcoholized wine - called Be Well Chardonnay. Easy and smooth and can’t believe 20 calories for 8 ounces. But honestly, I’m finding these NA wines to be so light in flavor that I’d rather just have my sparkling lime water with a splash of cherry juice or herbal teas. And have the NA wine as a back up. Whatever works I say!

@SunnyDays930 herbal tea and a bath, so good for the soul!
I too believe once we really want something (LA) things can fall into place. Not science based or at least I haven’t done any research, but the one thing I might add is …..things fall into place when we are truly ready (that mysterious shift). I believe you are going to achieve great success this year, one day at a time.5 -
@eahrenee today is a new day and you have great stats!
Gosh, I’m looking at what you have accomplished instead of what you have not, it’s so good.5 -
Hi everyone! I'm looking to become healthier this year. My goal for January is to limit alcohol to the weekends only. Hopefully feel better, be more productive, and maybe even lose a little weight. Good luck to everyone with their goals!6

I stopped 8 years ago on doctor's orders and am here to cheer everyone on!11

@NonnieDoiron Good luck on getting that new job...it sounds like you have it in the bag!
I don't have any children. If I did they would be grown and long gone. We don't have any family or close friends here. We do have acquaintance type of friends.
You would love living where I live. It's a rural area surrounded by farm land. There's more cows, sheep, goats, and chickens than people. I was more into the rural thing when I was younger. But, now I would like to be closer to shopping, restaurants, recreation, doctors offices, our veterinarian, and the library. Many years ago, the people in our town voted not to remain in the county library system. I guess their property taxes would increase by $2. So, we don't even have a functioning library. @globalhiker is always signing up for fitness classes and such. We don't have those things available here.
@SunnyDays930 Thanks. We have actually been decluttering recently. My husband is more of a packrat than me but he seems to be coming around. He starting getting rid of a lot of his things lately without any prodding from me. He said that he had so many things that he hasn't used in years and wanted to get rid of them. I guess I've been rubbing off on him. Some things we've sold on Craigslist and a lot just goes to St Vinnies. It's true if you haven't used something in years, why hold on to it (unless it's sentimental).
As far as prepping the house for selling it, there's not a whole lot to do. We need new flooring. But, other than that, everything is pretty good. Our front and backyard are both really nice. Although, I have a couple of landscaping projects that I want to do. They're not necessary. I just want things to be nice for us. Who knows if or when we'll move.
It used to be easy to move when I was younger. I had a bed, dresser, some stereo equipment, in later years, a computer, a few pots and pans, and your clothes. But, over the years, things accumulate.
@chicbuc I have a whole bunch of stories. I'll try to sneak one or two in from time to time. But, I'm trying to stay on topic. I bet @Womona is still dying to hear the story of the Mexican jail *LOL* I'll tell that one someday too.
This thread is very active this month...I'll try to catch up later.

@NonnieDoiron ~ baking bread would only work for me as long as I didn't eat it!! Carbs are not my friend, instant weight gain. But I'm sure it's was relaxing to do. Good Luck with the new position!!
@sunnydays930 ~ I agree that willpower does not work, surely not in the long run. You can muscle out a day or two but beyond that is just too much.
@globalhiker ~ Amen! Imagine living a life (full of joy) that you don't want (or need) to escape from!?
@eahrenee as @missmay said.... look at the bigger picture. You are doing well!
Thank you @MissMay!
@chicbuc ~ great start to your day! It's going to be a good one!
@xbowhunter ~ overtime, I can see how your taste would change. Sounds like a good thing!!
@michieb125 ~ I'm more content with my 5 calorie cran poma juice I think the only way the NA wines will help me is to "lighten" a regular wine.
Welcome @mike_check and @surananc !

I'm not sure if I've shared this in the past. But for those of you that like to workout at home. There's a book that I find really wonderful. It's called 6-Minute Core Strength. It has really good pictures and descriptions of the exercises. The core is usually considered the abs, back, and pelvic floor. But the exercises in the book also work your hips and he includes some shoulder work. He has another book that is for people over 60. But I checked that one out and the exercises are basically the same as the ones in this book. But the pictures and descriptions aren't as good. He also has YouTube videos showing just one or two reps of each exercise to show the proper form.

Welcome @Mike_Check all great goals5 -
New for 2025 back to counting calories. I HATE counting and logging calories. But since I wrote down the other day my calories eaten verses calories burned I know I have to JUST DO IT.
Good thing is I have confided in my Sister about calorie watching and daily exercise and she will be asking me about it everyday and I am glad for that.
I am also going to be checking out new places to walk on non-rain days to keep it fresh and new.

You're doing very well @MissMay! You have a great streak going on 🙂
I love to walk and hike but this year it has been raining nonstop (I imagine because of La Nina). We're supposed to have quite of few days without rain in the next week or so. So, maybe I can get out a bit.4 -
@Womona I would love to volunteer at the hospital. I actually wanted to get a job there. But it is about 13 miles from here and I currently don't drive except for very locally. I haven't driven myself there in about 11 years. Partially due to anxiety and now I'm having vision problems in my right eye. I'm not sure if it will ever get better. A while back I was thinking about getting a part-time job. But, I'm currently blind in one eye and can't see out of the other 😕3

I know others have said it, but what great positivity here to start out the year. Lots of great LA and AF streaks going.

I GOT THE JOB!!! But… there’s been a delay with it, and I may not start it until April. Always seems to be something. 🙄
Anyway, I’m going to count today as a an A day and have a celebratory glass of wine after I pick up my son from work.

Congratulations @NonnieDoiron! Great to hear you got the gig!
@SurferGirl1982 geez, when you say you’re rural, you’re not kidding! Oooh, with the difficulty driving, I can see why you’re feeling hemmed in. Oh and yes, still want to hear the Mexican Jail story!!! Haha!
@MissMay yeah, it’s a pain to log everything. However, I find that I wind up eating the same few things during the week, so it’s pretty easy. But still, one more thing to do!
@SparkSpringtime69 I love the positivity too! Even if someone is having a rough time, the warmth and encouragement here is wonderful.
AF again tonight! I tried a new NA wine, called One to One Cabernet . Jury is still out. It got better the longer it was in the glass. At least it’s not sweet. Got a 90 from Wine Spectator! So we shall see. Meanwhile it was $20, which still galls me to spend that much on freaking NA wine, when I usually spend that on real wine! Trying to not be bitter about that!5 -
@Womona I do know that you know how I feel. I do feel hemmed in. At least in town, I would be able to get around on my own. And, if not, there's Uber, Grubhub, DoorDash, and the cab company. Plus, there's bus service (somewhat limited hours though). You'd be surprised, but the cab company seems to be just as reasonable as an Uber (although I've never taken one). The last time that I took a cab in town the driver had a tablet. And just entered where we were going. Before we even left, he held the tablet up to me and said it will be $14 and some odd cents when we get back here. We don't have Uber, Grubhub, or Doordash in my town. I've downloaded their apps. The last one that I tried was DoorDash and it said that I was too far away. The cab company will come here, but since they're not stationed here, there would probably be a wait.
I got a chuckle when you said, "Oh and yes, still want to hear the Mexican Jail story!!!" I will tell it soon. The only reason I've been holding off was because the Mexican police (Federales) weren't picking on me. But, I had misbehaved ☹️ In my defense, I was only 19 at the time and need I say more? I'll tell you the story soon. I could tell you the story on your boat in the summer, but only if, I could man the sails! HaHa!3 -

Congrats @NonnieDoiron!! Amazing news!
