Is Tai Chi a good work out?

So, I really HATE sports. I stay as far away from them as possible. BUT I signed up for a Tai Chi course.
Question is: how good of a "work out" is it really? Also, since I haven't taken any sport classes since high school (over fours years ago) what should I expect? Anyone ever done it?
And on a side note: what kind of clothes should I bring? Sweat pants and tank top? Shorts? Tight yoga pants?

as for what you wear, I dont think it really matters as long as its obviously an outfit you can exercise in and move freely in.0 -
