Hey all, I decided I needed to lose weight 2 weeks ago and have lost 8 pounds in total. Just had my second weigh in today! But along with having something to celebrate I have something to worry about now.

What do you ladies do during your monthly?

I get so hungry and crave sugary things during this time and I can just eat and eat and eat. This is going to be the biggest challenge for me.

Has anyone got any tips for the need to binge during that god awful monthly period. I've just had a bowl of soup with a slice of bread and I feel like I haven't eaten anything. I'm bloody starving, just because of this time of the month, usual that soup would be plenty!

  • i've been having the monthly blues myself right now....urgh. i allowed myself a milkshake and a couple pieces of chocolate, but i also drank A LOT of water! and tried to work out a little bit (what my body would allow me)....hope this helps!
  • I think it's ok to kind of let yourself indulge a little bit more when you're "surfing the crimson wave", just really pay a little more attention to what you're taking in. You can swap out a lot of things you'd normally crave for something that's similar but a little better for you. Like swap milk chocolate or a brownie for dark chocolate if you're having sweet or chocolate-y cravings. If you're craving salty things swap potato chips for pretzels. If you're craving sour things swap pickles for lemonade. It's all about compromise!

Oh and I tend to avoid the scale that week, which really helps. And if I keep my health routine up, I usually see big results when I do weigh myself again once it's over.
  • I keep exercising and let myself eat a little extra. Or I eat something I usually wouldn't (like the chocolate coffee beans ad Dr Pepper I had last time) and then make up for it by eating better/lighter later in the day. I know it sucks but you will get through. ;) Congrats on your success so far!

Sorry, can't help you. I just went through 5 days of crazy eating myself. Dreading weigh-in tomorrow. I'm going to have to come up with some strategy too!

I try to add in extra veggies to fill me up if I am too hungry. I have found though that since I have been eating cleaner my body feels better like less bloating and so I don't want to just stuff myself. You can always try chewing some fruity or dessert style gum when you have a sweet craving or brush your teeth, that is what helps me.

keep counting the calories and fit little indulgences in. if you go over eat something healthy for the next meal and get back on track. taking walks really helps to get your mind off being extra hungry, it burns a few calories, and its relaxing.
  • Drink WATER and more WATER! Mine is terrible I've got mood swings to the extreme severe cramping, don't get off the couch let the kids tear everything up because I just don't have the energy to stop them from anything other than what would hurt them or my stuff bad. But if I drink water and alot of it everything returns to almost normal. I don't want to kill my husband for breathing, and I can get up more and interact almost normally, and with my stomach being full of water I don't want to munch as much. Although I do still want chips, my biggest weakness at that time. I get a small snack bag so that way I can't have anymore than I should. If it's not in the house than I can't eat it. The water helps fight off cravings. I also drink a cup of coffee with no calorie sweetner as a special treat get some flavored dessert coffee. I've got one called strawberry shortcake. Sounds weird but so good.

Have you tried keeping a little container of sweet things that are good for you, like fruit/dried fruit. Also if you make room for a few treats (exercising for extra calories?) you could plan yourself some chocolate or biscuits. Just knowing that you can have those things in moderation, planning, and enjoying them should help you steer clear of binges when the cravings get to much.

Your carbs may be over your goal depending on the % you already have for carbs and what else you eat during the day but I wouldn't worry about it, especially if alot of it is from natural sugars like fruit and your under your calories still.

Also, I wouldn't weight yourself during that time of the month, most women experience a temporary weight gain (water retention). It should go away within a few days by itself :)

whatever my craving is I allow for it in my food planning you can eat what you want and if you eat in just small amounts then you will still be in your calories
ideally I suppose we should use this time to train ourselves to ignore the cravings
as that is what they are you are craving a food you are not hungry and we should be seeing food as energy
see its so easy to say it
NOW I have to DO it too :):)

Extra protein really helps and you do burn more calories at that time so, if you're hungry, you should eat. I usually will have chocolate but I choose good chocolate (swiss or german, I like fair trade, organic if possible). Your exercise should be modified a bit too. If doing yoga let your instructor know it's your TOM and don't do inversions. Gentle walks etc. Whatever feels right for you. It is a time when you have to really respect your body and what it needs:flowerforyou:

I find since I started eliminating processed crap and processed sugar out of my diet, I don't crave as much in general. I used to crave sweets and fatty foods all the time, but since I've got rid of lot of the processed foods I can control myself. I also try to take in an extra serving of milk during that time.
