Is there a way to track my steps on a generic type Fitbit? Can I just put them in manually?

Hello, and welcome!
There's not a way to type in steps to MFP and get a calorie allowance.
If they're steps happening in everyday life, most people will suggest adjusting the "activity level" setting in your MFP profile based on your average daily steps.
I'm not super steps-conscious myself, but my understanding is that the threshold between "not very active/sedentary" and "lightly active" is somewhere in the 3500-5000 average daily steps range, with some variability in that because non-steps movement burn calories too, of course. "Active" probably starts around 10000 average steps daily.
If the steps are from intentional walking, you can estimate the speed/duration (or get that from your tracker) and enter that as one of the walking options in the MFP cardiovascular exercise database (though I think that tends to over-estimate calories, especially for long-duration slow-paced walks). Another option for intentional exercise walks would be to estimate the speed/duration, then use this calculator with the "energy" box set on "net", and enter those calories into the MFP cardiovascular section, either overtyping the calories from one of the standard MFP walking line items, or creating your own custom exercise:

The latter method is less likely to over-estimate the calorie burn, I think, and gives a bit more nuanced result because you can input any speed vs. MFP just having tiers of speeds.0
