Breaking up walking?

I have a quick question. I usually walk anywhere from 80 to 120 minutes. Is it okay to kind of break this up throughout the day? Most days I'd like to do 120 minutes, but I don't have the time all at once. Would the calories burned be the same? Or is it better to do it all at once??

bump for information! I do this too!
  • I'd guess that it probably wouldn't burn as many calories, as it would take an amount of time to reach the 'burn' point.

That said, presumably if you broke it into say, three, then you'd probably lose maybe 10-15 minutes worth.

I say this despite having no knowledge whatsoever, aside of snippets of memories of having heard something to this effect.

I don't know for sure, but I've read how it can be better to break it up because you get your heart rate up multiple times a day. And it definitely couldn't be a bad thing! Anytime exercising is a good thing!

I am training for a 3 day, 60 mile walk and will walk in the a.m. and the p.m. It is just easier to get things done throughout the day.

    Good luck! Happy Walking!

The difference in calorie burn would be minimal at most... go ahead and break it up!

I have tried logging it as separate walks and also adding all my walks together and adding it as one walk. There is VERY little difference in calories burned, so now I just log the walks as I take them. If breaking it up means you get more walking in, it's a win.

Thanks, this really helps. And thanks to everyone else :) I didn't expect such quick answers.
