A kind of mundane fried shrimp dinner at a hole in the wall restaurant near the hotel after arriving on our first day of holiday.

Dinner at a seafood restaurant. Stir fried sea bass, squid fried with garlic which is essentially how my prawns were cooked last night. Sunflower shoots which were similar to pea shoots.

Not sure if we will eat at the local BBQ restaurant because it looks like a tourist trap. The seafood spread, especially the swordfish, looks pretty impressive though.

We are in Thailand on Koh Mook near the city of Trang in the Deep South. I would recommend the Trang Islands for snorkelling from the beach (we haven’t been yet—hiring a longtail for that today to reach sites that are not road accessible) if you don’t require buzzing nightlife. There are a few bars but they are quiet. But stay on an island with a fishing village as the islands with resorts but no local inhabitants miss infrastructure such as roads and shops. Trang has an airport and is a 90 minute flight from Bangkok. The islands are 20 minutes by boat from the mainland. You can take a ferry or hire a private longtail which is what we did. Worth the $22 splurge to save a 2 hour wait for the next
ferry. Trang city to the piers is an hour by taxi for $25, but cheaper by public transport.

We love snorkelling and have consequently been to a lot of Thai islands. Trang Islands are great in terms of accessibility, low scale tourism, but adequate infrastructure on the ones with local inhabitants. You can reach the coral reefs off uninhabited islands by boat excursion as they are about 20 minutes apart. Affordable too. A plate of pad thai is 120 baht on Koh Mook compared to 150 in Bangkok, or 50 in Trang.

Yes, I have a recipe for eel.
    Dish famous in Azores islands.
First, cut eel into steaks. Split each steak to make it thinner. Marinade in white wine garlic salt and chilli flakes for overnight.
Next day, pat dry the eel and dredge in corn flour and fry till crispy. Enjoy it warm with a salad…..😀😀😀
