Can someone please explain calorie adjustment like I'm 8

I use a Garmin Swim 2 smart watch. I'm not sure I fully understand why I get a negative calorie adjustment when I work out. For example, I did 30 minutes on an elliptical today for 303 calories and 30 minutes on a recumbent bike for 174 calories. I received a calorie adjustment of -624. I only had 4614 steps at that point. So is that because I didn't rech my required steps?

You're receiving a negative adjustment because otherwise you would be getting double credit for the eliptical workout you did. You can tap on the adjustment and then the "i" to see a breakdown of what's happening there.

But in short- if you log exercise, you're probably not going to get an adjustment from your overall activity for the day (your "steps") because by default, MFP assumes a certain level of activity (your Activity Level) and any exercise you log is above and beyond that, and once logged will increase the threshold you need to exceed to get more calories in your budget.

Thanks. I think I get screwed because I do a recumbent bike a lot, which won't record as steps.

As long as you're wearing your watch while you do it and it's recording that activity, you shouldn't be getting "screwed" by it- it's just not double counting.

A solution may be to not log specific exercise on MFP.

Let the Garmin deal with your specific exercises and calories. The final exercise adjustment at midnight will "transfer over" the tdee value estimated by Garmin which will include all your exercise and activity for the day
