Free version

I used to have my fitness pal and it was always free now when scanning it takes me to the subscribrion page and won't let me use it.

Yup, the barcode scanner became part of the paid subscription a while back. Some countries/legacy users still get it for free, but I'm not sure which ones or why.

Why not use it for a while without paying? Then you might find out whether you need more or not. I've been using this website for over 10 years and never had the need. The scan uses the same food database, and depending on your country you might get correct or totally wrong food items most of the time. I know here, about 9 out of 10 are incorrect or have the wrong calories or macros.

I like the barcode scanner. You do have to be vigilant that it actually identifies the item correctly.

I'll echo what @yirara suggests; do the free trial of premium, use as many features as you can, and then decide if it's right for you.

Yeah, or go the other way around: use MFP basic version and see whether there's anything that you're missing. Then ask here whether premium might fix that gap or not. One thing is certain: premium or not, you'll get the same food database.
