Yesterday afternoon I drank a protein shake afterwords I was soo hungry. Is that normal should I eat afterwords. Or take it at a different time?

I can only talk about myself: Fluid food doesn't satiate me at all. That's why I only use protein shakes when I'm really low on protein for that day, as an addition.

Well, what was the reason for the protein shake? Meal replacement, meal supplement, the myth that protein shakes are necessary for health and weight loss, etc.? A little more info would be helpful to address your specific situation.

As I mentioned though, protein shakes aren't required to lose weight or to be healthy. Focus on high quality food intake that is in line with your daily (or weekly) calorie goal.

Interesting, never heard of a situation where drinking a protein shake caused an INCREASE in appetite after. Maybe by tasting the shake it awoke an awareness that you were hungry?

As a weightlifter who wants to make sure I get enough protein each day to fuel my muscles, I am an advocate in protein shakes. I don't, however, believe there is a magical time of day where the shake has greater or lesser effect, meaning I can drink one whenever is convenient for me. First thing in the morning, last thing before bed, right before/during/after a workout, between meals or with meals or replacing a meal…

If drinking a protein shake awakens hunger, maybe you should simply change what time of day the shake is consumed, say right before a meal or along with a meal. The protein inside will help you no matter what time of day it's taken…the old adage of "windows" has been largely debunked. Unless your doctor tells you otherwise, just drink it whenever works for you, or do as the others mentioned and focus on getting enough protein from your regular diet alone so a shake is not required to meet your daily protein goal.

I think we need a lot more info here. What's your total protein intake you aim for? Why are you here? Gain or lose? What are your current stats?

Different people find different foods filling, and as Nossmf said, sometimes even the timing of when we eat the food matters in whether we find it filling or not. Ditto for which foods, eaten at which times, may spike our appetite.

IMO, part of the process of losing weight successfully, then keeping that weight off long term, is trying things and learning from them . . . learning about ourselves. Then we can use those insights to turn the tactics that work well for us into new habits, and cross off our list the tactics that don't work well. The ones that don't work aren't "failures" as long as we learn from them.

I think other people can give us suggestions to try, but not solutions that will always and for-sure work.

If you need extra protein, consider finding foods you could choose instead of or in addition to the protein shake that would give you protein, and be more filling. Protein shakes are a calorie-efficient source of protein, but not the only possible source of protein. There are foods you could eat alongside a shake that are low-calorie, like raw veggies that are crunchy, that might be more filling (or not) combined with the shake. Try something different, or a combination, until you find something that is right for you.

One thing I wonder about is the nature of the shake: I'm out on thin ice when I say this, but some protein shakes have quite a bit of non-calorie sweetener to make them taste good, and there are a few people who find that non-calorie sweeteners spike their appetite. It's not the common case, but reportedly it's a possible thing. If your shake was sweet but low calorie, with either artificial sweetener or one of the low calorie "natural" sweeteners, you might try a shake that doesn't have that sweet flavor and see if that makes a difference for you (or not 😉).
