In My Fitness Pal your activity level should include activity outside of deliberate exercise. Deliberate exercise gets logged separately and you "earn" extra calories for it. Exercise calories earned can be generous, so many people start by eating back just a portion and adjust as needed.

Tracking your steps can help determine your daily activity.

    Pedometers classify activity as follows:

    • Sedentary: Less than 5,000 steps daily
    • Low active: About 5,000 to 7,499 steps daily
    • Somewhat active: About 7,500 to 9,999 steps daily
    • Active: More than 10,000 steps daily
    • Highly active: More than 12,500 steps daily

Good advice above for a starting estimate. Then follow that fairly closely for 4-6 weeks (or at least one whole menstrual cycle for those who have them).

At that point, compare actual average weight loss per week to target loss rate. If necessary, adjust calorie goal using the assumption that 500 calories a day is roughly a pound per week. (Use arithmetic for partial pounds).

If you think of weight in kilos rather than pounds, 1100 calories a day is roughly a kilo per week.

Reasoning: The starting estimate is basically the average for demographically similar people. We're individuals. Most people are close to average, but some aren't, and the reasons may not be obvious.
