Goal Weight reached!!! Now what?

So today ends my journey to reach my goal weight. I started exactly 190 days ago @ 189 lbs. Today I weigh 165. I honestly do owe it to MFP. Even when I did my half marathon training and trying to lose weight for my wedding, I only got down to 172. And jumped back up to 189 after getting married. With MFP I was able to track what I ate, work off anything above my limit, and it helped me make better choices when it came to food. In the end, the weight slowly came off. I got sort of discouraged these last couple of weeks because I was 167 lbs for 4 weeks straight. So I changed up my exercise to be a little more aggressive and here I am today at my goal weight.

So now that I have reached it, now what? Should I set new goals? Should I try for 155 or be happy at 165? (Which I am by the way.) Or should I just bump up my caloric limit to maintain my current weight?

Thoughts?

The journey never ends....set new goals. There is always room to grow.
  • I say if you are happy where you are, @165, then stay there. Bump up your calories to maintain and be happy with who you are and what you have accomplished. Congratulations! That is so awesome. You can always challenge yourself physically in other areas, besides weight loss. You can try to run longer, or lift more weight or train for another marathon or whatever you really have an interest in doing. I think continuing to challenge yourself in some way will be a good way to keep you on track, but it doesn't have to involve weight loss. Just my 2cents......good luck & congrats again!

Congratuations on reaching your goal!!! Do you really need to lose more? Does your doctor think you should? If not, work the maintenance program for the rest of your long, healthy life! You will be a better person for having gotten healthy and stayed that way.
  • yes, be happy at your goal weight, you deserve the satisfaction. But be careful. Be a "thinking" eater :)

You will have to decide how you want to look. A lower weight is not necessarily better.

I am also training for a half marathon, and while I'm 170lbs right now and would like to be 167lbs, I'm not too worried about getting the weight off. I know I look better above 165lbs so even if I get there I'll go into maintenance mode and just stay between 165-170.

I may do P90X or Insanity just as a challenge but weight-wise I won't be trying to lose anymore.

That is awesome. You can always go between 155 and 165, this way it gives you some juggle room with your weight.

What's your plan to maintain? If you don't have one, I'll offer mine which worked for five years:

Select a 5lb range (such as 162-167) that you're comfortable in. When you are at the top of the range, make conscious choices to eat better. When you are lower in your range, feel more free to eat naturally. If someone offered me candy and I wanted it, I'd have some if I was in my range. When I hit the top of my range, then my answer was "Thanks, but not today".

To me, that kind of answer reinforced that I wasn't forbidding myself from ever having that food again - just "not today".

Maybe just ease up on the exercise instead of 'bumping up' your calories? Unless you enjoy the exercise, then by all means keep doing it, but you said you were getting more 'aggressive' with it for the final push. Or, you could keep going in this vein for a couple weeks, see if you continue to lose weight-- if you do, awesome, if you don't, no big deal because you've still achieved your main goal, and now's your time to relax and enjoy the new you :)

Congrats on reaching your goal. Weight maintenance can be tricky, but you have a great tool in MFP. If it was me, I would work through the details of weight maintenance for awhile now. Then I would evaluate where I wanted my weight to be. I know that momentum is a consideration, but there's also some sense in a phased weight loss plan. Right now you're doing great.

Congratulations! Now I have a question....

Are you happy with the way you look and feel now?

After I reached my goal I realized "Hey, I'm scrawny instead of flabby". So I started working on trim, firm, strong, and flexible.

Thanks for all the kind words. I think what I plan on doing is maintain + firm up. Yes I did lose all the weight, but I spent these last 190 days doing mostly cardio to get my weight down. But I think it is time to firm up the body. I don’t need to look like a body builder, but wouldn’t mind looking a little better with a shirt off. I might look into P90x.

I have changed my MFP settings, raised my caloric limit and just as a buffer, set a new goal weight to 160. But if I stay 165 for the rest of my life, I will be extremely happy.
