Gorgeous skies but chilly winds kept me inside… that and the carb craving baking frenzy. Tried my hand (twice) at hot cross buns. While not an epic fail (they’re tasty) the lemon curd crosses on one batch, and the cream cheese crosses on the second, completely melted and distorted. IF I ever try again, the piping will be done AFTER baking and glazing. I’ll have to really really want them to go through all the faff, even made candied citrus peel from scratch. SMH.
I'm not overly fond of hot cross buns, but I did get some from the grocery store. These have been pretty good. 😘

Machka - I’m looking forward to the long weekend. We get three days, I bet you get four.
Five actually.
Good Friday, Saturday, Easter Sunday, Easter Monday, and Easter Tuesday.
Plus next Friday (25th) is ANZAC Day, another day off.
So I've taken Wednesday and Thursday off as well for a total of 10 days off.
I was actually debating about doing some work during those 10 days … but I told myself that I've got enough to do at home.

On my walk on Monday … it was a beautiful day!
All this is practically on my doorstep. It is within walking distance. 😊

😀 Michele, I go to bed about 6:30 and get up at 4:30. I like to do things early in the morning. When I'm invited to do things in the evening, I politely decline. I usually just say that I'm not available because I don't want to be asked to explain my preference.
😀 I got a message from Social Security that it will be 30 days before my claim will be processed. Don't know what will happen, but I've done my part. I'm good at waiting.
😀 My yard is looking better every day. I used to have a big bed of bulbs (daffodil, tulip, gladiola) but when Annie came along and ran through it, I dug up what I thought were all the bulbs and moved them. Now Annie can play and I can enjoy the flowers outside the fence. It's still too cold to plant seeds but I have more weed pulling and preparation to do before then.
😀 Barbara, I love the picture of the dog conducting the orchestra. It's a beautiful metaphor for my life. I've started getting up earlier so there's plenty of time for me to sit on the couch with Annie. We watch YouTube videos until she's ready to play or lie down by herself.
😀 Kylia, keep sharing about your cats. I always thought my later years alone would be spent with cats, but with Annie in charge, there's no place for a cat (or the several that I thought I'd have).

Morning, my chickens…
Well, the exciting part of my day has already happened - I changed to a different brand of probiotic/fiber gummy combined💊, instead of separate ones. Woohoo! 😏
The next exciting bit will be whether or not I still count eight dryer balls left after I pull the clothes out. Otherwise I'll have to search on the couch, through the pile of dry clothes to fold, for the one that's tried to escape. 😁🐿️🐾😻 Sometimes two! 🤪
Machka - I thought that might be the case, on what was edited out, but wasn't sure. Thanks for clarifying.
Medical stuff - trying to write this out for myself to make sense, so seriously, skip it if you want to:
Won't be talking to the cardiologists at the VA at all, as the call from them to schedule an appointment did NOT go well at all. I was informed that "Cardiologists do not talk to patients over the phone," in very haughty tones…
My first choice was to drive over an hour to Fayetteville to that massive rat maze of a health campus up there. I did not mention it, because it's business as usual for me, but the day my friend's father died, I made it ten minutes away from the house and had to stop in a gas station, barely made it to the restroom. Turned around to just go back home, and stopped at Lowes to pick up that rose bush, which was just a few blocks away, but that time I didn't quite make it and had a lovely mess to clean up in the Lowes bathroom. Got the rose, got out of there, went home, and just barely made it to the bathroom at home. I never know when those days are going to happen, they're not every day, but they're worst in the two weeks before the Skyrizi injection.
My other option was to drive a half hour away to the much smaller clinic and have the nurses "prep" me for a phone call at the clinic on the "Telehealth" system so the cardiologist can see me on video. I might have been OK with doing that if I thought there would be any use to having that appointment at all. I don't.
But here's the deal - There's always a deal, you know. This is complicated, but I'm trying to explain it so you understand why it's got me a little on edge at the moment.
I'm depending on the VA to handle my prescription medications going forward, as Medicare won't pay for them unless I move to a private Medicare Advantage plan - and those have a six-month, preexisting condition gap. That's a huge issue for me right now, as you'll see below.
But…. the only way the VA will continue to pay for the vast majority of those prescriptions is IF my primary care doc at the VA approves them as being "medically necessary."
Honestly, the heart medications aren't that big a deal, cheap prescriptions, a few dollars each at the moment, no more than my copay for the VA, which is $11 every three months for the two I'm taking.
However, the Skyrizi may become an issue. And it's $20,000 per injection, six injections a year. That is just not an option for me and Corey financially, it's simply not. And none of the other options have worked, I've tried them all. I can't even describe how much I've recovered of my life since I've been on the Skyrizi. May not sound like it's working with that issue above, but it's one day out of 10 or so, instead of every single day now.
That means I MUST keep my VA primary care doc on my side for at least the gastroenterology issues, because the only gastro doc they have up at the VA in Fayetteville is absolutely horrible, a big bully.
Please note - they have not yet told me I must see a VA gastro.
While the rules are arcane, having to do with how far away I live from Fayetteville, and if there is a long waiting period to get to someone up there, if they're making me move to a VA cardio, the gastro is probably next. And that is a BIG problem.
This is me assuming there will be a problem when there might be no issue at all. But I'm pretty good at reading the signs.
Oh - and I just spoke to my VA appointment scheduler to sit down with my primary doctor and discuss the situation, and she told me that without orders, she can't schedule time with the doctor, and that the only way to get orders is (you guessed it) sit down with the doctor… at an appointment that I can't schedule without orders… I give up.
Sorry about that - don't worry if you didn't read it, I didn't even want to read it. I'm just so tired of dealing with a system that does not WANT to serve, it wants you to go away.
I've got clothes to hang on a line, and need to meet the AT&T internet people at the little house, so they can rip those wires out, the electric got theirs done yesterday.
Love y'all,
Later,
Lisa in AR10 -
That system is beyond crazy making! I hate it when rules contradict each other. Most of these things I can look at like a complicated board game, I just need to figure out the rules then I can jump the hoops in a way to get what I need - but that system makes it so no one can win. What did you do to get the very first appointment with your primary care? I have been known (don't tell anyone) to lie - I need to see the doc for my sore shoulder or sore throat something that by the time you have an appointment in 2 weeks is all better but you keep the appointment to talk about what ever it is that you needed to talk to them about in the first place. Stupid as all get out that our health care system works the way it does, but we just have to out play them.

Thanks, Kim - I'm only giving up for today, I promise. My mental health requires me to step away from it today. I'll slug it out tomorrow, when I go in to see the VA podiatrist (well, the podiatrist PA, which I'd rather do anyway).
Love,
Lisa3 -
Barbara - I don't know what the "MFP staff" edited, lol. I don't think there was anything too kitten juicy in there so they might have cleaned up some of my English. I do know a lot of awkward sentences and bad grammar slips through that I don't catch until it's too late to edit. 😕 I used to depend on that button they removed that gave a view of the finished product for proofreading. I LOVE that musical Maltese video. If something happened to Rosie, I'd be elated if a Malti-poo fell into my lap.
Michele - what is this new job in Charlottesville that Jess is taking? Is this in a Vet clinic or is she in research or?? It will be great if BK can find a spot for the non-English speaking girl where she can learn different skills and improve her language without it impacting the work hours of regular workers. I think you gave them a wake-up call there.
Tracey - good job on the A1C, your doc sounds practical and easy to work with. Also congrats to Rodger on the job scene.
Lisa - so sorry about that mess with the VA.
Kim - great strategy dealing with this healthcare system. Brilliant!
I ran across some podcasts/interviews with Dr. Sabine Hazan, who has done research on the microbiome and has had success with many diseases of the gut with fecal transplants. And interesting that this treatment also has proven beneficial with other things such as Autism, Parkinsons, dementia, etc. This is a relatively new area of research. She has written a book - "Let's Talk S**t" (poo poo, lol.) She drinks Kefir and eats Activia yogurt which has a strain of probiotic that reaches the gut. I just put it on my shopping list. And will be making another batch of Kefir. The more diversity "down there" the better since it's where my immune system hangs out. 😁
Done with PT and on with Suitcase Carry.
They released me yesterday. My back isn't "perfect" but I can do many things without pain that were tough a few weeks ago, and that was my goal. My other goal was to pick their brains about the best way for me to do my workouts at home and I consider that a success.
It sounds like the "Suitcase Carry" is a great way to develop and strengthen core muscles. I was doing it at home from time to time before this back pain started and I stopped, fearing I had damaged a disc. And I was doing more of a Farmer's Carry with weights in both hands at the same time. So I'm changing strategy. At PT I built up to carrying a 10# weight which was pretty heavy and I didn't carry it far, but gradually building up to heavier weights is OK per the therapist, even 20#. Just take it slow. A bit more about it from Copilot:
A "suitcase carry" is a functional strength exercise that involves holding a weight, like a kettlebell or dumbbell, in one hand at your side—just as if you were carrying a suitcase. While keeping your posture upright and your core engaged, you walk a certain distance or for a set amount of time. This exercise is great for improving core stability, grip strength, balance, and overall body strength. It's a unilateral exercise, meaning it works one side of your body at a time, which helps address muscle imbalances. Plus, it mimics real-life movements, like carrying groceries or luggage, making it a practical addition to your workout routine.
I'm moving the little tomato plants out of the garage and into the greenhouse today. At night I'll have to set them inside the potting shed since we'll be flirting with 32F - 0C for the next few days, but they should be able to put on some growth much better than under the growlights.
Beautiful sunny days today and tomorrow. Let's see if I can get the sprayer to work. Going to have another go at the super strong vinegar - it did a good job toward the end of last summer and is non-toxic.

Lisa - Ugh. I want to murder someone when that sort of thing happens. Sending hugs.
I'm glad Bea is here, because I was shaking and scoured out after uploading my book. Her energy is refilling me. Right now, after doing some art, she is playing a board game with John. I progressed with a couple of large canvases, but I'm still pondering on them.

Did the basic step and pilates DVD’s today.
Another guy is coming tomorrow at 4 to give us another estimate for the deck. This will probably be the last one.
Walked down to Food Lion to get the potatoes for Sunday since they are the only store around that carries Yukon Gold potatoes and I wanted them for the scalloped potatoes. Then went to Sam’s to get the meat. Boy, was it expensive! But part of that was probably because I wanted prime and not choice.
Made chicken for another time and put it in the freezer. I did want to get the chicken out of the refrig. Now making pork tenderloin in the IP. Wanted to get that out of the refrig, too. I’ll just put the cooked tenderloin in the freezer for another time.
Mo – while doing the step(it’s VERY basic) DVD, I surprised myself how much I’d forgotten. Like at first I struggled with “around the world” step but it did come back to me. Amazing how much you forget. Well, it’s been months since I’ve done any step.
Yea me...I changed the battery in the pedometer. Actually, it really wasn’t hard. I also had to put in the settings again (date, time, etc). I do hope my stride length hasn’t changed in the past few years. Now I know why I was getting such weird numbers on my total steps for the day.
Flea – I highly doubt the gal was fired. The mgr has too soft a heart. Knowing her, she’d find SOMETHING for that girl to do. Will the girl quit? That’s up to her
Jess said she was coming this weekend and bringing the dog and the cats. I would be willing to bet any amount of $$ that she’s hoping for low wind and sunny Sun (or Sat) so that we can start to open the pool. She wants to move to an area near us, and I bet that translates into “so I can come more often and use the pool and spa”….lol Well, it COULD be worse
Thank you everyone for your congratulations for Jess. Wow...I never DREAMED of all that she’s getting.
Lanette – what kinds of things did your doc give you to try to get your HDL up? Congrats to Rodger
Shoes: I needed a new pair of Birkenstocks for down at the condo so I looked on Amazon. The problem was that not only were they expensive (that I can live with)but they were getting them from Europe so who knows when I’d get them? And I needed them pretty soon. So I wound up getting a pair of like-Berkenstocks that were less but that at least could be delivered in a few days. The strap is more flexible than I’d like, but you get what you pay for. I’ll live with it. I have the Birkenstocks at home and at the condo it’s not like I would be wearing them a whole lot, so I kept them
M – how did you stretch the toe box? Do you have to have a pair of wooden “feet”? I remember FIL had them.
Barbie – I’m the same way as you. If I’m not in bed by 9, I’m yawning all the next day. If I don’t exercise first thing in the morning...it doesn’t get done. That is, and don’t ask me to explain this, going for my walk. Actually, now that it’s getting darker later, I do like to go for a walk after dinner. It seems to settle my stomach.
Did a load of laundry this morning. It was in the wash while I was downstairs exercising and then in the dryer while I went for my walk.
Lisa – what a real mess! I remember FIL would tell the ambulance people that he couldn’t breathe just so that they’d come in a reasonable time frame.
Lanette – I don’t know a whole lot about Jess’ job right now. I’ll probably find out more this weekend. See, she was looking at different types of jobs, even at one point working in an emergency clinic (which I think she’d be terrible at. Not that she doesn’t know the stuff, but that if someone mistreated an animal, no matter how much they denied it, she would really rip into them – she’s such an animal lover). I suspect it’s more on the research line because that’s what she really wanted. You know, about BK, it really surprised me just how much I really do care and enjoy the job. That was a real eye opener for me. Knowing that I have no problem just cutting out if I’m not happy, I think was an eye opener for everyone. I want to be happy, even if that means a lower salary or driving further away to a job. I just want to be happy. Thanks for the explanation about the suitcase carry exercise. I was about to ask you about it, and then read the post. That’s what I kind-of thought it was
Remember I told you how the cats used to always go on the dining room table so I put some orange peels on it? Well, that does seem to be working, we haven’t seen them on it. But I’m afraid that means that I’m going to have to eat a lot more oranges….lol I’ve told Vince that he needs to change his tastes to liking oranges. Wonder if that’ll work??????
Well, off to do a few other computer things, portion our the pork tenderloin, the go to the nursery for a few more plants. Maybe, just maybe, if I’m really really lucky, Jess and Colby will help me plant them this weekend. But honestly, I’m not holding my breath. I know Jess would rather get the pool opened. She’s only asked us quite often about it.
Michele

Thanks for all the sympathy guys.
So… I sent a message to my primary care doctor's team that pretty much said what I told y'all - that I got in a Catch-22 situation with an appointment setter saying I had to have the orders to get the appointment, and I could only get those orders through an appointment. Kept the emotion out of it, but noted my frustration.
Just got a call back directly from his admin (the appointment setter refused to transfer me to her during that call), and she scheduled me for the appointment that I originally asked for on the first week of June. Very sweetly, I might add—She and I have always gotten along fine.
That will give me time to get through my colonoscopy and my cardio visit in May and I can talk to my primary with good information about what's actually going on. This should never have been this hard. SMH.
I think I've been working too hard, so what I'm going to do today the rest of today is…absolutely nothing. Tomorrow I'll mow the lawn. They're still calling for rain all day Saturday and Sunday, so I can get out ahead of that, anyway, and hopefully just give Corey a weekend off for a change.
I am going to go take a shower, then sit down and crochet, watch some YouTube videos and enjoy being retired for a change…
Love y'all,
Thanks for providing a listening ear…

Michele- we don't have a basement so in an earth quake- I go under my kitchen table- Huge/heavy oak table. That is, if we have time. The last one hit at 4AM in the morning so we were asleep. That Napa Quake was the only one I have felt here in the past 32 yrs. I felt a big one when I lived in Santa Rosa. Former hubby was at work- I spent a LONG time under that table. That was the first one I had ever felt.
Getting ready to go to bed and it is just 8:30. So tired.
Had a great class yesterday. Former instructor surprised us by showing up. First time since Lyn took over about 4 yrs ago. Couldn't sleep last night- finally got to sleep sometime after 2AM and the alarm went off at 7. Got up/cats fed and went to the other house because son had a couch being delivered between 8AM-6PM> I spent the first 3 hrs cleaning out a big cabinet that is full of all kinds of dishes. SOme I knew they would use but others I left on the table(after clearing it off finally) and they will go through that. There is a beautiful set of China but not sure if his girlfriend will want it. he doesn't.
Daycare girl got dropped off over there and then the couch got dropped off. The guys were very nice- they were supposed to just drop it off on the driveway but they offered to bring it on in- just like 10ft-into the converted garage that is now their den- It is looking so cute. Next will be cleaning out the second bedroom and trading the two beds. MIL bought an expensive bed but choose to sleep on the floor then in her recliner so never slept in it. The bed in the second bedroom is a hospital style bed that was used for FIL. It felt so good getting the table cleared off, putting things where they belong and when they go through the dishes, it will be cleared again.
Tried to catch up on all the posts but my eyes are saying, "not tonight".
have a great evening ladies.Debbie

I had a ‘relaxed day yesterday. Activities are stopped for Easter break.
I got caught up with some chores, ran a few errands, and potted up some of my seedlings.
The weather is changeable for the next few days. We will have Easter Sunday luncheon with family at DED’s house, and go for a walk if the weather is dry. Granddaughter and youngest grandson aren’t coming home for Easter.

Book is live in the UK, but I think it might not be up elsewhere yet.
If you search for it on Amazon, try
what if... I am heather eyles
Paperback and kindle.
I hope you enjoy it. It's a fairly upbeat read in general, with some sciency bits that are fun.
Here's Bea with the Easter bonnet she made for a competition in the park today. She made it at home with her mum.
John is off to cricket. I might have steelcut oats porridge for lunch. Salt and butter. Thinking fish fingers and sweet potato baked fries for dinner. Asparagus.
Lots of love to all of you.

Heather: On a whim, I purchased your book. Congrats on another book! I will take it to the coast as an inspiring "beach/pool read"! I am also catching up on Cutting for Stone. An older book, but one I never read.
Carol: How is your back?
Lanette: Did I miss reading how old your caps are. I have 2. The first was put in while I was pregnant, so over 30 years ago. How lond do they last I wonder?
Barbara: I hope the situation with your water stays improved. I have a shower where the drain trap doesn't stay open and the plumber advised me to continue to use a wash cloth to keep the drain open. He didn't believe it was worth cutting into the wall as he said the repair might not even work. Hard to imagine there is not a fix for this.
Tracey: Been decades since I jumped off a diving board. I don't think I could do it!
Lisa: So great your friend will be seeing your daughter in Hawaii!
Ginny: I have lost track..Has your thyroid been removed? I thought Thyroid cancer had a high success rate with treatment.
Machka: Was it you or someone else who posted about having a Duvet Day! I have loved that and have had several since! I love the views near your home!
MO: Would an urgent care clinic be the right move? This would be away from direct patient care. I think an impatient hospice would still be lifting and moving patients. How about a dialysis outpatient facility? Do you think that would be lifting? A psych floor might be rewarding. I have known nurses that have retired to a psych floor.
Terri: Glad you had a relaxed day!
Sigh..I read so much more than I was able to take notes on! I wish everyone the very best! I have been stressing some about the tech world. I have yet to accomplish getting the GPS going in my car. My printer is broken and I spent 40 minutes with customer service on the phone to no avail. I know all could be solved if I found the right U-tube video for both situations!
So I gave up on the printer for now. I just emailed Fedex 14 emails to print out about my trip! And I will call Toyota at 9 to see about the GPS for my vehicle model!
I love the purple flowers in the Mary Davis poster! I would like to have this on a journal cover!
My new book group read Listen For the Lie and I am not a murder mystery person but it did hold my interest. There was quite a bit of pairing ups in the book. I have been with ladies in past book groups that would not have even looked at this book. So it will be interesting to see what else this book group reads. I am at a point where I just want very light books in a book group. Rosamunde Pilcher…a murder mystery ect. I do not want much political discussion in my book group. So I am excited to meet these ladies.
I don't know if any one remembers Jefferson Airplane, the rock group? Well we have tickets to Jefferson Starship that came after Jefferson Airplane. I am looking forward to this concert. I think of everything we have planned this is what interests me most. The Pirate Dinner Theater, I am pretty incredulous about. But will see!
I have a To Do list and really everything is pretty organized. I am using Rover.Com to board the dog. This is a splurge for the dog. I will go see my mother in May and he will be boarded at the Vets office at that time.
Probably will go back to nap for a while and then get up and take lawn debris to a lawn debris removal center near my house! We have had beautiful weather!
Best,
Rosemarie from GA

Rosemarie ~ It sounds like you have a great trip planned! 😊 Enjoy your time away.
Allie ~ Hoping you have good test results and no further problems.
PIP ~ WOW! You are so far ahead. Meant to say that the photo of when you showed your toe shoes made me think what a lovely space you have created.
I am doing the PT exercises but have to cancel the one for next week as my DH has a cardiologist appt. that day and we only have one car. Hope she can reschedule.
