Gorgeous skies but chilly winds kept me inside… that and the carb craving baking frenzy. Tried my hand (twice) at hot cross buns. While not an epic fail (they’re tasty) the lemon curd crosses on one batch, and the cream cheese crosses on the second, completely melted and distorted. IF I ever try again, the piping will be done AFTER baking and glazing. I’ll have to really really want them to go through all the faff, even made candied citrus peel from scratch. SMH.

I'm not overly fond of hot cross buns, but I did get some from the grocery store. These have been pretty good. 😘

Thanks, Kim - I'm only giving up for today, I promise. My mental health requires me to step away from it today. I'll slug it out tomorrow, when I go in to see the VA podiatrist (well, the podiatrist PA, which I'd rather do anyway).

    Love,

Barbara - I don't know what the "MFP staff" edited, lol. I don't think there was anything too kitten juicy in there so they might have cleaned up some of my English. I do know a lot of awkward sentences and bad grammar slips through that I don't catch until it's too late to edit. 😕 I used to depend on that button they removed that gave a view of the finished product for proofreading. I LOVE that musical Maltese video. If something happened to Rosie, I'd be elated if a Malti-poo fell into my lap.

Michele - what is this new job in Charlottesville that Jess is taking? Is this in a Vet clinic or is she in research or?? It will be great if BK can find a spot for the non-English speaking girl where she can learn different skills and improve her language without it impacting the work hours of regular workers. I think you gave them a wake-up call there.

Tracey - good job on the A1C, your doc sounds practical and easy to work with. Also congrats to Rodger on the job scene.

Lisa - so sorry about that mess with the VA.

Kim - great strategy dealing with this healthcare system. Brilliant!

I ran across some podcasts/interviews with Dr. Sabine Hazan, who has done research on the microbiome and has had success with many diseases of the gut with fecal transplants. And interesting that this treatment also has proven beneficial with other things such as Autism, Parkinsons, dementia, etc. This is a relatively new area of research. She has written a book - "Let's Talk S**t" (poo poo, lol.) She drinks Kefir and eats Activia yogurt which has a strain of probiotic that reaches the gut. I just put it on my shopping list. And will be making another batch of Kefir. The more diversity "down there" the better since it's where my immune system hangs out. 😁

Done with PT and on with Suitcase Carry.

They released me yesterday. My back isn't "perfect" but I can do many things without pain that were tough a few weeks ago, and that was my goal. My other goal was to pick their brains about the best way for me to do my workouts at home and I consider that a success.

It sounds like the "Suitcase Carry" is a great way to develop and strengthen core muscles. I was doing it at home from time to time before this back pain started and I stopped, fearing I had damaged a disc. And I was doing more of a Farmer's Carry with weights in both hands at the same time. So I'm changing strategy. At PT I built up to carrying a 10# weight which was pretty heavy and I didn't carry it far, but gradually building up to heavier weights is OK per the therapist, even 20#. Just take it slow. A bit more about it from Copilot:

A "suitcase carry" is a functional strength exercise that involves holding a weight, like a kettlebell or dumbbell, in one hand at your side—just as if you were carrying a suitcase. While keeping your posture upright and your core engaged, you walk a certain distance or for a set amount of time. This exercise is great for improving core stability, grip strength, balance, and overall body strength. It's a unilateral exercise, meaning it works one side of your body at a time, which helps address muscle imbalances. Plus, it mimics real-life movements, like carrying groceries or luggage, making it a practical addition to your workout routine.

I'm moving the little tomato plants out of the garage and into the greenhouse today. At night I'll have to set them inside the potting shed since we'll be flirting with 32F - 0C for the next few days, but they should be able to put on some growth much better than under the growlights.

Beautiful sunny days today and tomorrow. Let's see if I can get the sprayer to work. Going to have another go at the super strong vinegar - it did a good job toward the end of last summer and is non-toxic.

Did the basic step and pilates DVD’s today.

Another guy is coming tomorrow at 4 to give us another estimate for the deck. This will probably be the last one.

Walked down to Food Lion to get the potatoes for Sunday since they are the only store around that carries Yukon Gold potatoes and I wanted them for the scalloped potatoes. Then went to Sam’s to get the meat. Boy, was it expensive! But part of that was probably because I wanted prime and not choice.

Made chicken for another time and put it in the freezer. I did want to get the chicken out of the refrig. Now making pork tenderloin in the IP. Wanted to get that out of the refrig, too. I’ll just put the cooked tenderloin in the freezer for another time.

Mo – while doing the step(it’s VERY basic) DVD, I surprised myself how much I’d forgotten. Like at first I struggled with “around the world” step but it did come back to me. Amazing how much you forget. Well, it’s been months since I’ve done any step.

Yea me...I changed the battery in the pedometer. Actually, it really wasn’t hard. I also had to put in the settings again (date, time, etc). I do hope my stride length hasn’t changed in the past few years. Now I know why I was getting such weird numbers on my total steps for the day.

Flea – I highly doubt the gal was fired. The mgr has too soft a heart. Knowing her, she’d find SOMETHING for that girl to do. Will the girl quit? That’s up to her

Jess said she was coming this weekend and bringing the dog and the cats. I would be willing to bet any amount of $$ that she’s hoping for low wind and sunny Sun (or Sat) so that we can start to open the pool. She wants to move to an area near us, and I bet that translates into “so I can come more often and use the pool and spa”….lol Well, it COULD be worse

Thank you everyone for your congratulations for Jess. Wow...I never DREAMED of all that she’s getting.

Lanette – what kinds of things did your doc give you to try to get your HDL up? Congrats to Rodger

Shoes: I needed a new pair of Birkenstocks for down at the condo so I looked on Amazon. The problem was that not only were they expensive (that I can live with)but they were getting them from Europe so who knows when I’d get them? And I needed them pretty soon. So I wound up getting a pair of like-Berkenstocks that were less but that at least could be delivered in a few days. The strap is more flexible than I’d like, but you get what you pay for. I’ll live with it. I have the Birkenstocks at home and at the condo it’s not like I would be wearing them a whole lot, so I kept them

M – how did you stretch the toe box? Do you have to have a pair of wooden “feet”? I remember FIL had them.

Barbie – I’m the same way as you. If I’m not in bed by 9, I’m yawning all the next day. If I don’t exercise first thing in the morning...it doesn’t get done. That is, and don’t ask me to explain this, going for my walk. Actually, now that it’s getting darker later, I do like to go for a walk after dinner. It seems to settle my stomach.

Did a load of laundry this morning. It was in the wash while I was downstairs exercising and then in the dryer while I went for my walk.

Lisa – what a real mess! I remember FIL would tell the ambulance people that he couldn’t breathe just so that they’d come in a reasonable time frame.

Lanette – I don’t know a whole lot about Jess’ job right now. I’ll probably find out more this weekend. See, she was looking at different types of jobs, even at one point working in an emergency clinic (which I think she’d be terrible at. Not that she doesn’t know the stuff, but that if someone mistreated an animal, no matter how much they denied it, she would really rip into them – she’s such an animal lover). I suspect it’s more on the research line because that’s what she really wanted. You know, about BK, it really surprised me just how much I really do care and enjoy the job. That was a real eye opener for me. Knowing that I have no problem just cutting out if I’m not happy, I think was an eye opener for everyone. I want to be happy, even if that means a lower salary or driving further away to a job. I just want to be happy. Thanks for the explanation about the suitcase carry exercise. I was about to ask you about it, and then read the post. That’s what I kind-of thought it was

Remember I told you how the cats used to always go on the dining room table so I put some orange peels on it? Well, that does seem to be working, we haven’t seen them on it. But I’m afraid that means that I’m going to have to eat a lot more oranges….lol I’ve told Vince that he needs to change his tastes to liking oranges. Wonder if that’ll work??????

Well, off to do a few other computer things, portion our the pork tenderloin, the go to the nursery for a few more plants. Maybe, just maybe, if I’m really really lucky, Jess and Colby will help me plant them this weekend. But honestly, I’m not holding my breath. I know Jess would rather get the pool opened. She’s only asked us quite often about it.
