Did need the other can of orange paint.
The whole time I was making the “stuff” Vince was watching me and laughing. Well, his turn will come
Heather – poor G. I remember when we were in France, Vince kept saying that I’d be the one to be pickpocketed since I’m so trusting. Guess who got pickpocketed (hint: it's not me)? Fortunately, Vince knew some French. Update: glad it was found
Deb – have you ever had red okra? I like that it’s not as “slimy”
The guy about the deck came. We decided to also do the enclosed porch since right now the flooring is the same and we would have to either match or contrast the deck, and since the floor in the enclosed porch it will eventually give way, we decided to do both at the same time.
Had my dinner of chicken broth and jello. Made more jello for tomorrow morning. The stuff still hasn’t kicked in YET. I know it’s coming….
Vince is supposed to sub bowl again next week. I’m beginning to think that he’s going to be a sub for this team and C’s team I think C’s team will need me the 21st since she’s going for an operation and I’m sure her hubby will be with her, so they’ll need 2 subs.
Want to take a shower before it kicks in
Have to go at 11 tomorrow. Wish it was sooner.

Barbie: Thank you for the new thread for May.
Weekly shopping done, plus lots of little chores. I have Shakespeare Study group after lunch on Thursday, and Latin and Parchment Craft on Friday.
The weather has been unusually warm for April, so got out into the garden for a while today. Monday is a public holiday, so looking forward to a restful weekend.

Thank you Barbie for the new month - April whooshed by quickly, didn't it? Summer is on the way!
Michele - hope the colonoscopy is pain free and "unremarkable" in medical terms. 😁 You guys are making great headway getting your place spruced up!

Thanks Barbie, for starting May off right!
Reposting my post to Lisa:
Thanks for your insight into all of this.💖👍🏼 He hasn't gotten his first Skyrizi infusion just yet, probably ordering it. He is eating because though he hates having to deal with it, he knows it helps him. We talked about how living on his own would look like, and he would probably be learning how to make my chicken with his chicken fried rice. For some reason, chicken, eggs, bacon and rice all process well together, when he was in remission while on infliximab. Then it just stopped working. Heres my brave guy.💖👍🏼
a second later he did a crazy smile which was hysterical. Though freaky!

thank you all for the condolences. I’m doing ok. I’ve been doing my workouts and taking my vitamins. I haven’t really been stress eating, but I have been enjoying cake that people brought in.
Yes, Beth, same brother. He was not driving in the other accident. He was with a friend. This one happened at an intersection that is known for fatal accidents. The police report said he was making a left turn and stopped for some reason and an oncoming car hit him. The driver of the other car had non-life-threatening injuries, thank gooodness. My brother was determined to be at fault. The weather, his exhaustion from working during the day and staying with his wife at the hospital at night, his own bad health, all probably played a role.

Michele - I just put the dry crystals of epsom salt around the plants I want to protect. You might want to water it in for the plants to absorb it. Hope colonoscopy goes well.
Pip - Bon voyage. Have a good time.
Rita - That whole episode sounded kind of freaky. Enjoy your vacation.
Went to yoga today and changed beds and washed sheets. Hope you all had a good day.

I didn't sleep too badly, considering. Awake early, but that's OK. I will be washing my hair in a bit. I warned John I might be disturbing him a little early. I laid out my clothes last night for the journey. The London tube will be very warm. I've got to debobble the cardigan I'm taking for this evening, which I probably won't have to wear, but I will be out late. I will have a chance for a nap at the hotel when I get there.
I'm not horribly nervous, but it's a long way. My stamina is not great these days, so I will be kind to myself. It's a cab, then a train, then the London tube, then another train, then a cab. I used to drag my bag all the way up the steep hill to the hotel; over the canal, up past the Robin Hood statue and the castle. But heat and age make me more cautious. Taxi it will be.
I'm so relieved that G got her passport back, because it doesn't bear thinking about. The hotel change worked out well, but it's all expensive. I know she is planning on treating herself to a lovely lunch today in a restaurant she likes a lot. Then she gets the train to London and then another one back to Portsmouth. I think she will be more tired than me! She is 76.
Love to all. I will probably check in from the hotel.

Rebecca: I hope they get his meds sorted quickly. Chin up, buttercup. Things will improve.
Heather: I know what you mean about stamina waning. Every little thing seems to take so much effort. But I’m sure you will have a great time with your friendsLanette: It’s so hard to believe that we are already 3/4 of the way through 2025.
Pip: Have a wonderful time on your cruise.
Today I have Shakespeare Study Group after lunch. Tomorrow morning it’s our final Latin Study meeting before summer break, and then I have Parchment Craft after lunch. Monday is a public holiday, so I will be enjoying so down time.

Morning, my chicks…
Well, I'm coming into May a third of a pound higher than I was, so I didn't hit two of my goals, "be lighter" and "stay on budget."
Dealing with the cleanup on the little house has been hard on the budget thing. You just can't unexpectedly pay for a property, three years of back taxes on said property, lawyer fees, 16 tons for disposal (so far) and a piece of heavy equipment to move all of the horrendous mess into the disposal bin without taking your budget out back and shooting it in the head. Ah well. It's not like we plan to do this often. Speaks of the wisdom of the phrase, "Be careful what you wish for."
At the same time, it's not unexpected, either, it's just kind of all coming around at once. We'll be able to get back to our more usual financial path shortly, but in the meantime, it will take a little bit of a bite out of our finances.
The "be healthier," which is the third tripod of my goal structure is OK, I guess. I'm not sure things have improved on that side, but they have not gone backward, so I'm calling that a win.
Same goals for May:
🚅Be lighter
🚅Be healthier
🚅Stay on budget.
Now I just have to go rewrite my budget! The demolition team isn't going to be cheap…
Later, my dears…

I'm on the train to Nottingham, waiting for the drinks trolley to come through. Tea etc and snacks are free. I will nab some emergency biscuits and crisps, though I had an expensive salmon salad at the station.
I've got a tea, water, crisps, and some shortbread, which I'm saving for later. So far, all is quiet enough to read.

March Highlights
Exercise Minutes & Strava Accomplishments
The tall bars were my cycling endeavours over Easter. 😊
Other April Accomplishments
- Lost 7 kg (15.4 lbs) since the beginning of January - no change through April. Possibly something to do with Easter Eggs.
- Cycled 203 km with the longest ride being 52 km.
- Walked 59 km.
- Climbed 302 flights (up and down) of 20 stairs up plus landings.
- Worked full time but did have 10 days off over Easter and ANZAC Day.
- Still madly busy at work with Audits, Submissions, and all. Work has been rather overwhelming since the beginning of the year.
- Attended husband's follow-up appointments for his ruptured Achilles tendon.
- Cortisone shot in left shoulder.
- Organised and hosted cycling event at the beginning of the month.
- Travelled up north for that cycling event and visited Sheffield - trains and murals.
- Bee Group.
- Lunch with friends.
- Organised a few things in house.
- Got our van serviced.
- Travelled up north for 5 days over Easter. Enjoyed quiet, somewhat remote, historic farm.
- Started Learn to Swim classes!!
- Got some gardening done
- Did several Sudokus.
- Coloured 1 page - didn't take my colouring with me during our Easter holiday.
- Read 4 books.
- Continued reading Bible every night.
April Books
Of those 4, I gave When No One is Watching 5 Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I liked it enough, I've started another Alyssa Cole novel.
The Spellshop was sort of cute.
Small Joys was boring.
Lone Women … I don't mind so much if you want to put a dragon into early 20th century Montana, but using very modern language was irritating.
I'm doing some of Goodreads challenges so I am reading books I would not otherwise have selected with mixed, but reasonably positive, results. Some authors I wouldn't read again, others I'll try another novel to see if I like it.

Trying Activities
After my husband's medical situation (TBI) finally settled, 5 years after his accident, I decided to start trying things that I've always want to try.
I decided I didn't want to keep saying, "That sounds interesting, I've always wanted to try that". Instead, I wanted to DO the things.
Last year, my husband and I took a fencing course which I enjoyed and at some point, I may get into it again.
Last year, we also did the Indian Pacific train ride from Perth to Sydney.
And we went to the The Butchart Gardens which I've always wanted to see.
In March, we took a 1-day introduction to pottery course which I loved. I'd like to do more of that!
In April, I started a Learn to Swim class for a list of reasons I posted in the April thread. We'll see how that goes.
And I have more on my list!! Stay tuned as I continue to try things I've always wanted to try! 😁

And speaking of not staying on budget - did I mention I broke my old vacuum cleaner yesterday? And of course, when I broke it, I broke a part that is unfixable, even if I could find the plastic part that broke off.
Adventures in domestication:
So… I ran up to Walmart this morning before the worker bees blew in there and bought a new one, then out of curiosity, once I got it back and put it together, I ran it across the living room and bedroom rugs.
Got two inches of dirt in the dirt tank out of the living room rug, and approximately half a cat in cat fur out of the bedroom… and considering that I literally vacuumed both of them yesterday, pretty sure my old one was doing a horrible job of getting things clean. I still couldn't get myself to pay hundreds for a Dyson, nor will I plan my entire home around a robot vacuum, no thank you.
But, because I know someone will ask (you know who you are 😻), I got a BISSELL PowerForce Helix Turbo Rewind Pet Upright, with the auto cord winder, for $90 with tax. It weighs about 17 pounds. Pleased so far! My old one was also a Bissell, and lasted about 10 years before I broke it. It cost a similar price. The new one is much easier and cleaner to empty and reset the dirt tank, and I love the auto-winder. I'm terrible about rewinding vacuum cords, and they get all twisty if you don't.
Something I forgot to say earlier, too… Thank you, Barbie, for keeping us centered and moving on.
Later, y'all,

May 1 ... we welcomed one more of our multicultural staff into Australian citizenship. Not sure if she's a dual citizen like me or not.
Many of our staff are immigrants, like me!
I've been an Australian citizen for 9 years and 3 days.
Got both flu and COVID vaccinations.
When nothing was working with my code and I could not figure out why not, and all I wanted to do was to sleep ... it was time to call it a day.

A couple of pictures where the lady fell yesterday. They were trying to jump from rock to rock on the cliff like you see in movies. They missed. The girl fell trying to rescue her boyfriend. On top of that the boyfriend had only minor injuries and is now in jail on a warrant for beating up 3 cops! The girl is in critical condition at a trauma hospital nearby. SMH I left the pics big so you can see the roughness of the cliffs. They were carrying the girl down after rappelling her to the top. No other way to get to her.

Well yesterday we got our roof and gutters cleaned and anti moss sprinkled all on the top of the roof. We are the ski chalet on our street😁.
Husband bought an electric mower. Its our first mower ever! We have always either not had a lawn, had lawn service as part of the rent, or in our rich phase, we paid for lawn service ourselves. So now husband with spring grass popping all over, he thought it best to get a mower. I anticipate lots of moaning and sore muscles over this but he's enthusiastic!
Today is Thursday grocery day, but honestly we don't need to buy too much. I need some veggies, and the snacks I have been eating every day, but that's it. I am really proud of myself that I don't buy those frozen meals anymore. No Lean Cuisine for me! I do buy every couple of months during the winter Marie Callenders turkey pot pies, because its such a comfort food. But for weekly meals nary a frozen meal has been ate by this gal!
I get really heart happy when my youngest sailor messages me on my Athena cell asking "want to video chat"? I leave it up to him to connect with me because earlier in the hospital stay, I woke him up calling him. I felt bad about that, so told him connecting was when he wished to. I think he's kind of lonely there sometimes, so like last night I watched him eat dinner, I yacked, and he seemed happy with that. (I did give him the option of calling me after he ate, he's like no this is fine Mom).💖.
I have had to do a lot of self chats with myself of handling this situation. Lots of coming to terms with things, what my role is in my youngest sons journey etc. I have decided to be the rational, encouraging, positive, logical, truth telling Mom I can be. 💖🤗🙏

Machka - you are inspiration the way you continually go on adventures and try new things.
Heather - I don't know that I could go on a trip like you're making to Nottingham alone these days, though you are used to traveling on trains and using city transportation. I understand about the stamina - though when needed, we seem to draw it from somewhere. Thanks for taking us along on your journey. Glad G's passport reappeared.
Rita - wow, a lot of excitement with those injured hikers. Arrests…Critical condition…Wow! Enjoy your time away and rest up. Might be an exciting summer.
Carla - yes, Happy May Day. 😁
Lisa - I have a vacuum almost exactly like your new one, a few years older. After I let my old housecleaner go, I tried to keep up with vacuuming then luckily hired Collette. I remember her first day of cleaning she said she filled up the cannister twice. 😲 Probably some cat hair, my hair and plenty of ash/dirt from the woodstove.
Rebecca - love seeing your son's smiling face. He's in good hands for sure - crossing fingers his gut can get healed enough that it's easy for him to cope with this disease.
Looks like my fretting about leaving my place and missing a good mowing day visiting that art gallery is unwarranted. Weatherman has decided to give us plenty of days over the next week to get the yardwork done, so let it all grow. Besides, I'll hitch a ride back with T and we're going to stop at the feed store to load up on chicken feed. One of my favorite places, lol. And seeing P's drawings and other artwork might inspire me to do something creative that doesn't involve weed eating and chickens.

Relaxing at the hotel. I've just made myself a cup of tea and couldn't resist the biscuits. Oh well. I managed a nap, so in a minute I will be doing some ablutions and a change of clothes. Glad I got here a bit early. There is a bit of a low rumble outside my cheap bedroom, from air cons etc, but I can shut the window tonight and I have earplugs. Bed comfortable.
I have no idea what we are doing tonight, but I will go with the flow. It's v warm here.
So, just waiting to see my son for the first time in a few years! It doesn't seem that long.

😀 I got my letter from Social Security in the mail—-three months from my first phone call but less than three weeks from my phone interview. My survivor/spouse benefits were approved and back benefits deposited in my bank account. Now I have to find out from my accountant how much I should have withheld for taxes and fill out the forms for that.
😀 Heather congrats on your courage in taking the trip to Nottingham. That's a lot of different transportation to juggle.
😀 Lisa, the whole point of a budget is to make sure that you have the resources you need for the big projects. You've done well over the years to make it possible to fund the acquisition of the new property and all that's involved in getting it ready for you to enjoy it.
😀 Lanette I don't vacuum much. The last two vacuums were purchased by daughter when she came to visit, vacuumed, and decided that we needed something new. She bought me a Rumba and as soon as I read the directions and saw how complicated it was, I sent it back.

Here I sit...drinking that yukky stuff. I want to be as clean as possible because I DO NOT want to go thru this again.
Sue – glad to hear that’s what you do with the epson salt since that’s how I did it. Now the lady at the nursery said that I should dissolve them in water at first and then water the plant. I just put the crystals around the plant and then water the plant so that (most of) the crystals dissolved. I think I’ll stop at least for a few days since I don’t want to overwater the plant. How long does it take before you see any results?
Thurs here: Did walking DVD’s so I was close to the bathroom. I swear, there isn’t anything at all in me.
Well, it’s over and I’m now having my yogurt. I normally don’t buy flavored yogurt, but I wasn’t about to wait for fruit to defrost so I got some flavored. Vince said he wants to cut the grass. They did tell me not to use any machinery, but if I feel OK in a few hours, I’ll probably use the walk-behind. I’m on the 5 year plan (they found 2 polyps). No fair! I’m the one who has a high-fiber diet, and Vince is the one who is on the 10 year plan
Rebecca – I honestly can’t remember the last time I bought a frozen meal. They are just so high in sodium and really not all that good. The Lean Cuisine’s are really nothing but portion control, and cheap me can do that myself
barbie – yea for getting that SS
Well, I’m going to lay down and get the rest of this anesthesia out of me. Want to get dinner ready to be microwaved. Ceramics tonight.

Barbie, thank you for a new month!
The scale has been a large disappointment to me lately, I keep thinking that my eating just isn’t bad enough to justify what’s happening. I tracked yesterday, really tracked, and was rewarded with a one pound drop today. I’m really hoping that this will be the beginning of a trend. I did cancel my membership to the Y and have been getting out for a walk or bike ride most days. I found I just wasn’t using my Y membership, too much time spent driving there and back, changing shoes etc. Now I just put on my shoes and head out the door! Still don’t make it every day, but that’s okay too. Today is a no day, need to get some running around done. You’d think that navigating some of these larger box stores would burn more calories, but alas, that’s not the case, sigh. Oh well, onward and upward!
Hugs for those needing them, congrats to those celebrating and welcome to the new gals!

The evening went very well. Much easier than I thought. I did make my son cry, talking about my baby Kate. 😥 We had some sparkling wine at their lovely house, then walked out to their local micro brewery, then on to a tapas restaurant. I went back to theirs afterwards for a cup of tea, and then got an Uber back to the hotel. I'm sure he was pleased I had made the effort.
Conversation flowed well, but their life revolves around the brewery, where his partner works part time, and all of their friends go. They have an impressive array of friends. My social life is nearly all about the family, plus a few clubs. But we found a lot of things in common. I would count it a success.
Now winding down before bed.
