Barbie - I also found that while the early appointments with Social Security seemed to take forever, once the formal interview was done it moved quickly. I called them earlier this week due to survivor benefits. Originally they had told me I needed to report when I stopped working (the windfall stuff if you have a government pension). Well, since that has gone away, I keep getting what I have been getting (husband paid much more into SS than I did.
Rita - I hope the young lady pulls through. No words for the young man,
Spent most of day reviewing insurance options (I will go through the state retirement brokerage group and get several hundred towards health expenses each month). Decision overload. I have decided I don't care for the Advantage Plans (hate being locked in to specific network of services). So I need to pick a Medigap plan that covers who I want, and then there are the drug plans. So much easier when I just took what the county provided!
Drop yesterday and today. Fatigue is still major factor. Back to working more diligently on breathing exercises-got behind with all the leaking because forceful blowing out of air also caused more leaking!
Going to put dishes from dinner into dishwasher. Slowly doing more minor house chores. Still no vacuuming, etc. Want to wash bed linens tomorrow and put fresh on bed. Meeting two friends for lunch-checked out low fat option-grilled shrimp and white rice
Take care all,
Ginny in Ohio

Barbie, thanks for another month, another chance, another fresh start. In preparation for our church’s kitchen remodel both fellowship committees emptied out all the “stuff” from the cabinets, storage racks, closet and island. None of us were prepared to decide what to donate, what to dump, what to keep so we just piled it on 6 banquet sized tables. Then the church admin and the pastor’s wife came out from the council meeting and stunned at the amount of stuff. With their inspiration and energy we were able to get it down to 2 tables of donations, 1 table of keep and a huge garbage can full of dump. I even threw some things away! You’d have been proud of me. Guess that’s what Cas calls “body doubling.” It sure worked.
Kay are your brother’s children all adults?
Mo, is that your daughter Julia in the pic with you? Was the feather in your Mom’s hair yellow?
Tina enjoy the Elton John concert. That screw coming out sounds scary!
Rebecca ((hugs)) and prayers for your youngest and you.
Heather do the girls change in the dry robes, or wear them home?
Machka I love avocado with a little salt or lime, I’m so with you about green bell peppers, why would anyone eat something that is unripe on purpose? I like the orange bells and can tolerate the red and yellow, but suspect I have a little capsicum sensitivity as I always sneeze when cutting them up. Every time I’ve tried to skip the after potty sit to stands, I shake my head and tell myself “your future self will thank you for doing this.” Hoping it becomes a solid habit in 3 weeks, or less…
Debbie raw mushrooms, yuck, sautéed mushrooms, yum! Tomato sauce/paste is fine, but raw tomatoes? Nasty slimy things, just like okra. 🤢
Carol I like fresh mustard greens better than canned. I do not like ANY kind of squash, period, end of sentence. Cilantro tastes like Irish Spring (don’t ask me how I know.) 🤮
Lisa sorry to hear your son and his significant other are splitting. Remember she was a stabilizing influence, grateful he’s grown and their parting is amicable.
Pip the cruise sounds great! Hope no issues getting the book style passport in time.
Heather concentrating on being curious sounds like a great strategy for visiting the foreign country of who your son is today. Glad it was successful. That tart looks mouth watering. Safe travels home.
Rita glad to hear your kidney news, sad your DS relapsed but grateful he went back to rehab, (and they took him back in.) WOW you really helped rescue that hiker. What Lanette said about how sadly you’ll be missed at that campground. Enjoy your well deserved vacation.
Michele I know, I can’t quite believe I’m 75 either. Kind of like Heather’s son being 49, how the heck did THAT happen? Take it easy, rest, and recover from your procedure. So glad only polyps and not the scary other.
Terri what is the public holiday Monday?
Lanette glad to hear you’ll have dry weather for a few days. I got out into the yard for two hours today before the wind picked up. The soil thermometer in the mini greenhouse read over 90F this morning so I quickly unzipped and rolled up the “door” before the cucumbers melted completely. Must remember to close it all up before I go to bed.
Evelyn imho steps around a big box store count. Congrats on the new trend!
On water sports: I used to love to swim, and really enjoyed Aqua Zumba back in Idaho. Water skied once, wasn’t good at it but managed to get up at least once and it was euphoric. Alas the only pools here are outdoor and not heated to my taste. There’s also the issue of being seen in public in a bathing suit…
April summary WT up, steps down, details some other time.
May goals same Move more, fuel better, open heart. Different details, potty sit to stands, max 2 pcs chocolate, get back to steps goal.
Later, lighter, lovelies!Barbara, the Southern Oregon Coastie AHMOD
May focus: Just one thing from the OMG room
2025: Chose NOW: to move more than yesterday (5 sit to stands every potty break no excuses, get steps back up towards goal), fuel better than yesterday (hold that after dinner sweet down to two pieces of dark chocolate max, 50 % AF days, add 1 C bone broth and 1 TBS collagen peptides daily), open heart and mind before mouth, REALLY.6 -

I’ve decided that I’m not going to walk the kids with kirby tomorrow morning, going to get on the bike instead. This will be the last good ride before the flight to Seattle. I will be riding a total of 111.64 miles ( maybe more, I don’t know yet) I’ve done what I wanted to do, kirby colored my hair, it’s cut, went to get my nails and toes done, filled the hummingbird feeders, made his chocolate treats, changed the bedsheets, gathered up what I think I will be taking. I think I’m set.

Ginny – I don’t have an Advantage plan for the exact same reason you don’t want one. I don’t want to be locked into only certain doctors. Plus, I want to go to the nearest hospital and like I know in FL it isn’t in network.
Allie – I’d never seen a stroller wagon like that so I had to look it up. Looks very neat.
Went to ceramics and the newgal was there. I think she’s very flexible, seems like a niceperson. I do wish they’d kept J on and let M go, so that would mean J would be working with B (the new person). They’d have the knowledge that J has along with the flexibility B would provide. But, alas, they didn’t.
Put my updated exercise DVD list on my phone, just in case I find any more DVD’s down in FL(like I need more)

I love alone time but will be glad to have DD back home this weekend. She flies standby for free so doesn' know for sure yet when she will be able to catch a flight, Sat or Sun. I hope she makes it home Sat as I have tickets for the Seattle Symphony Sunday afternoon. I go with friends from church and we usually leave right after that and have lunch at one of the little restaurants at Benaroya before the concert. Vivaldi this time. I do have someone to feed horses Sun afternoon if DD isn't home in time.
Went to water exercise this morning. Planning to buy groceries tomorrow.
Thanks Barbie for getting us all to the right place.
Everyone take care, Sue in WA

It's the morning! 😃 Slept OK, for me.
Just chillin' in my room with a cup of tea before going down to a hearty English Breakfast. I've paid for it, so I'll eat it! 🤣
Pleased with the way things went. I hope my son can come down and visit before too long, so he can see his nephew and nieces. I don't think Bea remembers him at all. Travelling provokes a lot of anxiety in him, but he can do it. But I am resigned to re-establishing my once a year visits, for as long as I am able.
Hotel mirrors have reignited my desire to shed some pounds. Not a pretty sight. 😨 Realistically, because I am not going to 'diet', I might be able to lose 10 pounds by the next cruise in October. More activity, slightly less food. Every pound will make me feel more comfortable. So if it's only 5 pounds, that's great. Having a goal, like the cruise, helps me.
Love to all, Heather UK xxxxxxxx

Barbara, yes, my brother’s children are 21, 22, and 37. They each have one chid. The boys have girls and the girl has a boy. The oldest is very mature, knowledgable, and is doing a good job of handling things. The daughter is getting there after a rough patch of bad decisions. She has found a new inner strength and determination to get her life on track. The youngest son has some major growing up to do.
I’m going on an overnight spiritual growth retreat later today. I’ll stop and visit with my mother for a few hours on the way. I finally got the pollen off the porch yesterday and put out my new cushions and throw pillows. My rocking chair cushions won’t be here until Tuesday. The cheerfulness and cleanliness lifted my spirits.12 -
Happy May Day…
It was so gorgeous I gave it the medium setting.
We lucked out on the storm on Monday! North and South of us got hit with wind, a tornado, and large hail! Yes grateful!
Yesterday proud of myself for changing a recessed light that blew out. When I went to change it quickly realized the bulb had left the flange in the socket. Fortunately I had just recently updated the labels on the fuse box so I quickly cut the power. Then I remembered to get the stuck part out you use a potato. Fortunately I had a sweet potato the had a pointed end and fit the socket. Once I got it out enough I finished with needle noise pliers. New bulb put in, power back on, SUCCESS!

Hello, my dears,
My stomach has finally settled down - bubble guts all day yesterday into last night, was up from midnight to 2 a.m. and then after I got up again at nearly 7. Not a good 24 hours… but it may be the Activia. I ate one of the small cups of it in the early morning yesterday, and apparently my system doesn't like it at all. I have some odd reactions.
I'll wait a week, try it again and see what happens. Could just be the stomach flu.
Heather - So pleased you've enjoyed your visit.
My best friend is in Hawaii, and got a chance to spend time with my daughter. I got this pic texted to me last night. Two faces I love so much. But no, I don't wish I was there. I wish they were here! 😻
Just got off the phone with my baby sis; like me, she's been inundated with rain for quite some time. So much flooding around Lawton, Oklahoma. She said the Army base there is basically underwater. We're under a flood watch, but living on the side of a hill has its advantages.
Later, y'all,

Lanette, All the employees here are gearing up for a BAD summer! We already had some teens ‘skeet’ shooting beer cans over the lake on our ‘Day side’ where all the picnic tables are with a lot of people enjoying the day. On top of Wednesday’ incident, I am very glad to get away for a couple of weeks. We are moving later today.
I updated my goals for the month and the totals are in the spoiler. With everything going on, I’m glad I only gained 2 pounds over the month. I should be able to drop that easily. With our move to a new location, I will have new places to walk and new birds to spot. Can’t wait!

At took me a long time to realize that each person is responsible for their life. It took me years to discover that my anguish, anxiety, my depression, my courage, my insomnia & my stress, does not solve your problems but aggravates mine.
I am not responsible for the actions of anyone & it’s not my job to provide happiness but I am responsible for the reactions I express to that.
Therefore, I came to the conclusion that my duty to myself is to remain calm and let each one of you solve what corresponds to you.

Greetings Rita!
When you hear “mushrooms,” you might think pizza toppings or stir-fries — but there’s a whole world of fungi that go far beyond flavor.
Functional mushrooms have been prized for centuries in traditional medicine for their potential to boost energy, sharpen focus, strengthen immunity, and even support longevity. Now, modern research is starting to reveal the science behind these benefits.
Here’s a closer look at some of the most studied functional mushrooms — and what makes them special:Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) Known as the “mushroom of immortality” in Traditional Chinese Medicine, reishi contains compounds called triterpenoids and beta-glucans that may help modulate the immune system, promote relaxation, and support healthy inflammatory responses. Some studies also suggest reishi can help reduce fatigue and improve sleep quality.
Lion’s Mane (Hericium erinaceus) Lion’s mane looks like a white pom-pom and is celebrated for its potential cognitive benefits. It contains hericenones and erinacines, compounds that may stimulate the production of nerve growth factor (NGF) — a protein essential for the growth and maintenance of brain cells. Early research links lion’s mane to improvements in memory, focus, and even mild cognitive decline.
Chaga (Inonotus obliquus) This tough, dark mushroom grows on birch trees and is packed with antioxidants, especially polyphenols and melanin. Chaga may help combat oxidative stress, reduce inflammation, and support immune defenses. It's often used as a tea for a natural antioxidant boost.
Cordyceps (Cordyceps militaris / sinensis) Cordyceps are famous for their energy-enhancing properties. They contain cordycepin, a compound thought to help improve the body’s use of oxygen and increase ATP production (the energy currency of your cells). Some studies suggest cordyceps may help enhance exercise performance and stamina.
Turkey Tail (Trametes versicolor) Turkey tail is rich in beta-glucans and polysaccharopeptides like PSP and PSK, which may help regulate immune function and support gut health by acting as prebiotics (fuel for beneficial gut bacteria). It's one of the most widely researched mushrooms for immune support.
How to Find and Use Functional Mushrooms
You can find functional mushrooms in a variety of forms:
- Powders: Add to coffee, tea, smoothies, or cooking.
- Capsules: A convenient option for consistent dosing.
- Liquid extracts/tinctures: Easy to add to drinks or take on their own.
- Teas: Especially common for chaga and reishi.
- Fresh or dried: Available for lion’s mane, reishi, and turkey tail — great for cooking or brewing into broths and teas.
Look for these products at natural food stores, online retailers, or specialty shops. Choose brands that are third-party tested for quality and free of fillers.
Doses vary depending on the type and form. Here are some general guidelines:
- Powders: About 1/2 to 1 teaspoon daily.
- Capsules: Follow label instructions (often 1–2 per day).
- Teas: 1–2 cups brewed from dried mushroom pieces or powders.
Start small and see how you feel — more isn't always better. And because functional mushrooms are adaptogens (they help your body adapt to stress), their effects are often subtle and build over time.
Here are some ways to use them:- Stir powders into coffee, tea, smoothies, oatmeal, or soups.
- Brew dried mushrooms into teas or broths.
- Sauté fresh lion’s mane with olive oil and garlic for a delicious, brain-boosting dish.
- Add extracts to water or other beverages as a quick supplement.
Consistency is key — functional mushrooms work best when used regularly, not just occasionally.
Important Note: Functional mushrooms are powerful — but they’re not a magic bullet. They work best when combined with a healthy diet, good sleep, and an overall wellness routine. Always talk to your healthcare provider if you’re pregnant, managing a health condition, or taking medications.
Adaptogen Mushroom Smoothie
The fruit and nut butter in this smoothie help balance the earthy flavor of the mushroom powder, making it easy and pleasant to drink.
Ingredients:
- 1 banana (frozen or fresh)
- 1/2 cup frozen berries
- 1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk (or other milk)
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 teaspoon lion’s mane or chaga powder
- 1 tablespoon nut butter (optional, for creaminess)
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon (optional)
Instructions:Blend all ingredients until smooth. Adjust liquid as needed.

I am sitting on my deck enjoying the sunshine and a coffee waiting for my friend that is visiting to have her shower. We are going toodling around today. I need to do a Costco run, she has an ultrasound booked.
Tomorrow she goes to the doctor, she is picking Michaela up on her way back and then we are going to Kaitlyn’s for supper.I have managed to keep reading this week, but haven’t taken notes. I also haven’t gotten any walks in.
I talked to my Mom today, she turned 79 yesterday. She told me it was raining there. She mentioned that she hadn’t talked to Grammie lately. I told her I hadn’t either and agreed that we should give her a call soon. She passed in 2009.
I can always tell that she doesn’t understand why I don’t know exactly what my girls are doing, I think she pictures them as young still.
Such a miserable disease, Alzheimer’s.I should go get dressed and get ready for my day

Good morning ladies!
Heather - sounds like you had a great trip visiting your son. I just looked up where Nottingham is. Quite a ways from where you live on the coast. I can see why you ended up taking several different means of transportation to get there.
Rita - thank you for posting your goals. Lots of great information and ideas there. With all of the "action" anticipated at the park, they'll be sorry to be without you for a couple weeks.
Margaret - I would love to have taken swimming lessons from you.
Tracey - glad you got to talk to your mom, sorry Alzheimers has her in its grip like that. I recall when my mother was unable to even speak on the phone anymore, but it gave me a chance to catch up with my dad - he was normally not a "phone talker" - due to his hearing no doubt. But he made an effort.
Lisa - glad you are feeling better today. Sounds like plenty of water to contend with in your area. Neat that your BF is able to spend time with Kels!
I messaged some questions to Dr. Lisa and got answers back yesterday. My Creatinine was low and the BUN/Creatinine ratio above high normal. She said she's not worried since all of my kidney markers are just fine, this is probably due to excessive protein. She's holding me down to 100 gm/day. I was probably getting 120+, since I was cutting down on carbs. I plan to go over all of this in detail when I see her this Thursday.
Our outing to the art gallery yesterday was fine. T and I plan to hit another one in a few weeks. These are nothing like Margaret visits - they are tiny spaces where a few artists have their drawings, paintings, pottery and jewelry for sale. Lots of beautiful things. Luckily my house is already overflowing so I wasn't tempted to pull out the checkbook.
I rode out to the gallery - in Morton, WA just off Hwy 12 - with Pat, one of the artists. She told about a friend of hers, quite elderly, who had to move from his large home into an assisted living situation at a well-known place in town. A large room, bathroom, kitchenette is $5,000 per month. NO nursing care.
If that's not incentive for me to eat right, keep exercising and taking care of myself, I don't know what is.

I HAVE to have tomatoes and cucumbers. Most get eaten in the garden, never make it into the house.

the prices for assisted living and care homes is so high. MIL is in a private home, shares a room with another patient. There is care there for them 24/7 but they are not medically trained(the two I have seen, other than the owner who is only there part time) don't speak a lot of English. We are paying $4000 a month. The assisted living place we had for dh's aunt was exactly like what you described, size and price(but that was over 5 yrs ago)

Margaret, I can float on my back all right. In fact it's one of my best moves in the water … just lying there and relaxing. 😃
I can even do the back stroke reasonably well.
But, turn me over and that's where it all falls apart. For years, I've been sort of propelling myself along with my arms, head up, holding my breath, and dragging my legs. That's not particularly efficient. When I do kick, evidently I bend my knees a lot.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Regarding the time and energy to get to a place to swim …
My work colleagues have been extremely supportive of me taking swimming lessons. No criticism. No judging because I don't know how to swim. No being made to feel a little bit foolish for wanting to learn to swim at my age. No giving me reasons why I wouldn't want to learn to swim.
And all of them have told me that as soon as I'm comfortable in the pool, I will be taking it to the beach and will start swimming outside. Because everyone swims outside at the beach! My work colleagues are already talking about me learning how to swim out of a rip, dealing with waves, swimming deep under water, and all sorts!
I am surrounded by water and beaches here and would not have to go far to be somewhere I could swim. The triathlon club swims at a beach about 5.5 km from where I live.
And, if I walked about 100 metres from home, I could climb down to the water and might be able to swim there. I would have to ask around to find out if it is OK for swimming, but we're certainly going to try canoeing.
This is the little tiny beach about 100 metres from home.
I was soooo stiff this morning! I think I must have held tension in my body on the way home. We had a couple of small delays, nothing serious, and the journey went fine. I walked down to the station, which was a lovely stroll along the canal, and I walked through St Pancras to the tube, and I almost ran from the tube to the train at Victoria, because I knew there was one waiting to leave. So I got some exercise. I'm so grateful I'm able to do this now, after my operations. I used the lifts, when they had them, and the twice I had to use the stairs, someone helped me. (I had a small wheely case) The on train free snacks were excellent.
Yes, Lanette, London is in the way. You can go round it, but that is.very slow. Better to go through it.
I arrived home to a delicious cauliflower cheese that John had cooked for me, and relaxed with a cup of tea, swiftly followed by a Pernod. All good.
Today, John is driving to cricket at Southampton, mainly to see his friend. He will be back in the evening, so I think I will make a lamb, lentil, and spinach curry. I can reheat that for him when he gets in. It's so good for him to have a friend. Next week, the friend is coming over to us for the cricket. He parks in our drive, and they walk in.
Love to all, Heather UK xxxxxxxx
@cityjaneLondon … did you go to Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem while you were in Nottingham? Friends of mine took me there the first time I went to England.
Machka - That Inn is just down the hill from my hotel. I walk past it on the way to the station. I went once with some friends many years ago and sat in the cave part. No, we went to their local micro brewery, in the suburbs, where my son's partner works Friday and Saturday nights, and cooks bar snacks. It's a great community hub for them. I'm pleased my son has found a friendly niche. I met his friend, Gadge, who I have seen a million times on their videos. Weird feeling! Like meeting your favourite superstar!
Just phoned G, who is recovering from her Paris trip. She's still glad she went, despite the hiccups. We swapped stories.🤩
Now for a lovely relaxing day.
Aging and Accommodations
Independent Living, Assisted Living, Full Care, etc. places are expensive. One of the places my mother would kind of like to move to is about $7000/month. We've advised my parents to stay where they are right now.
That is one of the big reasons why my husband and I bought the place we did. It's all one level. It's open plan so that the whole place is quite accessible. The main bathroom can be modified to make it accessible. It's got room for a medical bed if that were to become necessary. The hard surface flooring throughout makes cleaning easier and helps the air remain clean.
We're also working on the yard so that there will eventually be minimal yard work. In front, I'm planting mostly native plants and bushes that will just grow … I hope. No need for lawn mowing.
We've already had to test the place to some extent with my husband's ruptured Achilles tendon and we've been pleased.
Because this house is set up the way it is, we could opt for a home care nursing package if it became necessary rather than going into a facility of some sort.
Yesterday, I worked from home and worked from 9 am until midnight. Long, long day.
Today, I slept in, did some gardening, voted, did laundry, and went for a bicycle ride.
Now I'm trying not to watch anything about the election. Just about every channel is election coverage. 😕
It's our 22nd meeting anniversary on Tuesday, and I hadn't got John a present! So I went onto Amazon and ordered him some Armagnac. Arrives on Monday. It will remind us of our holiday in south-west France. Not long before we got married. At the time, we were thinking of buying a house there, for long holidays, but decided against it in the end.
I also bought myself a power bank, not expensive, because I worry about running out of power on my trips. I may never use it, but it will diminish anxiety. Good reviews.
Then I ordered some dark choc chips to make brownies for Max's birthday, the same day. My old, cherished, recipe has gone offline, but I do have a printed copy somewhere in a file. If not, I found a very similar one online and screenshotted it. It uses real, dark, melted chocolate, like other one. Very squidgy. We will have to take it with us to the school when we collect Bea. John has made him a great card. This year he is having money. John has also bought him an economics book.
So, all is organised. I will make a card for John this afternoon.
John's card. Max loves chess and runs the chess club at school.
Heather - Chess geeks are a special breed… sweet card! The trip to and from your son's sounds tiring, I'm so pleased you're handling travel so well now.
Machka - So pleased your work colleagues are supportive of the swimming lessons. Helps a lot when you don't feel like you're having to push to get what you need. We definitely considered the lack of steps, hall width, hard floors, all the same things you're talking about, when we bought this house. Where it hasn't been big enough, we've made it big enough, like the little half bath. It will easily accommodate whatever walking aids are necessary. We may not live in this house forever, but we wanted to be able to do so if we wish.
Corey and I are probably going to just take this beautiful spring day off and accomplish nothing much. It's awfully muddy out there, still, and there's enough clay in this soil that it's sticky.
The birds are yelling their little heads off this cool morning - about ten degrees cooler than yesterday, but will warm up soon.
The demo work is still going forward on the little house. They've stripped it down to the studs on the inside. Stuck my head inside yesterday to check on progress, and the worker bee showed me the closet that had been walled off in the old living area.
When I looked at it, I saw he hadn't emptied it yet. The denizens of the place had apparently left a few items in it when they closed it off. He said that he hadn't got them out of there because he kept running into snakes every time he moved anything.
I left. Hastily.
Urk.
Need to get down there and take pictures again today. From outside. 😜
Love y'all!
