I want something accurate to know how many calories I'm burning while working out... What do you use and would recommend?

I use a combination of a few things to get an overall average. I wear a HRM (heart rate monitor) watch while I work out. It tells me roughly how many calories I burn according to time period, age, weight.
Its pretty accurate for the most part. I also check on the machines, just to compare to my watch. Elytpical Machines are usually way off. Treadmil and bikes are more accurate typically.

Then when I get home I use a calculator depending on what type of activity I did. .

Also I calculate my work out on myfitness at the end of the day for my total score.

Once you start doing it, becomes alot more easier.

A good heart rate monitor is the best way to go. People on here keep talking about a Polar F6 or something, I think. Someone else is bound to respond with the brand.

Timex makes accurate and pretty affordible HRM. Anywhere from 80-120 bucks depending on the features. If you want something accurate its worth a few extra bucks.
  • I brought a polar heart rate montior the measured the heart rate, but not the calories. Then I got the polar F6 which does measure the calories. Its really good, im glad I brought it. It was £50 from amazon. On polar site they're 120 still.
You enter your age, weight and height. And you pick each time what kind of workout you want, hard - basic - light. While your exercising it beeps if your heart rate falls too low so you can keep in the right zone. But polar dont take into account what you would normally burn in that hour from just being alive so I always take 50 calories off for every hour of exercise.
    Hope this helps

I don't... I just try to manage my calories at the maintenance level. Any exercise I do is a "bonus." I find that this works better for me than trying to maintain the 500 calorie deficit day after day. On days that I don't exercise, that means eating only 1200 calories. As someone without much to lose, I find that too restrictive.

I use my Polar F7 HRM. I'm in love with it! I don't leave home without it!
The best investment I've ever made... only thing is I lost the transmitter last night at the gym. Had to order a replacement. I'm going to feel so lost without it. :frown:
