Flea … that's a horrible discovery. But I am glad it was discovered before it got any worse. I wonder if the mother had some sort of inkling something was not right because she was very supportive of her daughter. You hear of situations where the mother choses to believe her partner rather than her child.

Barbie - One of the things that really helped a lot when dealing with my mother's death was that a few months after she died, I began to write letters to her every morning telling her all those things that I thought about telling her - sometimes just a note, sometimes a few paragraphs, sometimes pages. For more than a year, I "spoke" to her every day that way. It was useful… until I realized I was fibbing to her about how things were going, so she wouldn't know what was going on!

Didn't say it was necessarily a completely sane response, but it really helped stop that feeling of taking a blow every time I realized I couldn't pick up the phone and call her, or simply go talk to her.

I forgot how active puppies are! She is crazy and attached herself to me. She does sleep under the table in a bed I got her so not on our bed. She has learned how to walk on a leash and knows her name. Potty training is next to focus on! She is doing very well. Took her for a walk yesterday while I was doing my rounds (about 3/4 mile). She gave out about 1/3 of the walk but I finished my rounds holding her. This is a great way for me to socialize her. Lots of kids and people to meet. She only met 2 little kids which is why she was wiped out so fast! LOL

My friend K texted me all day long yesterday about the trip we are going on in about 8 days. She was getting all worked up trying to decide where to stay for one night on the drive. I don’t her that is will work out. Don’t sweat it. I’m sure there are small motels or hotels along the way. If worse came to worse, we could always sleep in the car! Won’t be the first time I did that during a trip. She was still texting me at 10 pm my time, 12 hers. I quit replying at 9pm. LOL she gets frazzled easily!

    Thought for today:

Rita - you will have great fun with your friend! Sometimes it's best not to plan things to the nth degree and just let the spirit of adventure take over. Lucy will be great company for you and DH.

Tracey - your handiwork along your house is just beautiful, thank you for posting those photos.

Kim - it's great you are picking up some Spanish. Using it helps reinforce it. Many years ago I worked with Amish and Mennonites who spoke "low German." I took German in college but it's different when it's someone's first language. I often asked them to talk to me in German so I could try to figure it out. It ended up being a fun way to learn (I've forgotten most of it now.)

Also, how is your brother doing?

    About drinking water….

I ran across interesting information about the effects of dehydration on dementia and Alzheimer's.

Let me back up: We've all heard we're supposed to drink half our weight in ounces of water, but I never knew why. Some diet programs said when we're hungry maybe we're really thirsty so have a glass of water. The diabetes prevention class I'm taking says drink a lot of water because it flushes excess glucose from our system. That was a new one for me.

Anyhow, there's evidence that dehydration leads to cognitive decline. That got my attention. My DH drank one glass (more like swallow) of water to take his pills. Other than that, he drank one cup of coffee, one or two beers and a couple Pepsi's and that was it. I remember my mom didn't drink water or liquids that I noticed. Probably because her thirst response was diminished because of her age, and also it made more work for my dad or mom's night caretaker to put her onto the commode.

    Here's the article:

Can dehydration impair cognitive function? | Cognitive Vitality | Alzheimer's Drug Discovery Foundation

Tracey - Beth and others who are familiar with nursing homes… do you know if effort is made to make sure the residents are hydrated? Perhaps offering soups, flavored drinks and other foods like fruits help make up for the hydration if the residents aren't keen on drinking plain water?

Reminder that tomorrow is "weekly check in" for those of you participating.

    Good to see you, Kim.😊

I got the new knobs on the doors. I think they look great. The screws that came with them were too short, so I used the screws from the previous set. Perfect. I also got the catch half off the cupboard. The other screw was too difficult. But I managed to turn it to an angle, and now the door is much better, just holding closed by friction.

Design , especially interior design, has been a passion all my life, but I have not had the money to pursue it. I have studied the history, I watch videos, I read magazines. I love the peace that beautiful surroundings bring me. Soul soothing.

I did get a quote back for the rocking chair. I will have to put it on hold, I think. Plus do some research into where to buy the material that I have in mind. It's doable, but not right now.

Edie landed safely in Spain. What an exciting few days it's going to be for her.

The painter is back tomorrow morning, to continue with the porch and front door.

Love to all, Heather UK xxxxxxxx

😀 Lisa, I gave some thought about the idea of writing a journal or notebook to Jake about all the things I think I'd want to tell him and decided that it wasn't my style. Since I tend to talk to myself anyway, I can just incorporate him into my self talk. It's important to realize that most of what I think to tell him is stuff like "silly me, I forgot that the kitchen garbage can is in a different closet". None of it is especially significant.

😀 Heather, I'm enjoying hearing about your adventures in interior design. You are very talented, tenacious, and thorough.

😀 Allie, I'm reading a series of cozy mysteries set in a small town on Cape Cod. It sounds like a great place for a vacation. Glad you have had a good time.

    On water …

"Up to 60% of the human adult body is water.

According to Mitchell and others (1945), the brain and heart are composed of 73% water, and the lungs are about 83% water. The skin contains 64% water, muscles and kidneys are 79%, and even the bones are watery: 31%."

    https://www.usgs.gov/special-topics/water-science-school/science/water-you-water-and-human-body

"While the average percentage of water in a person’s body is around 60%, the percentage can vary from roughly 45–75%.

For example, babies have a high percentage of water in their bodies, which decreases with age.

Also, fatty tissue contains less water than muscle, so the percentage of water can vary with body type."

Where is water in the body

Mostly in the brain and kidneys!

    image.png

    Kidneys

"Your kidneys filter about 200 quarts of fluid every day — enough to fill a large bathtub. During this process, your kidneys remove waste, which leaves your body as urine (pee). Most people pee about two quarts daily. Your body re-uses the other 198 quarts of fluid.

Your kidneys also help balance your body’s fluids (mostly water) and electrolytes. Electrolytes are essential minerals that include sodium and potassium."

    https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/body/21824-kidney

If you consume high quantities of protein, it is recommended that you drink lots of water to counteract the potential damage the protein may cause.

    Brain

"Studies show that even mild dehydration, such as the loss of 1–3% of body weight, can impair many aspects of brain function.

In a study in young women, researchers found that fluid loss of 1.4% after exercise impaired both mood and concentration. It also increased the frequency of headaches"

One of the things I've started doing on Tuesdays, my swimming lesson day, is to drink about 400 ml of water in one go at about 2 pm … in addition to my normal consumption.

I've noticed a couple things: 1. I don't get cramps in my legs and feet when I'm swimming (I did on the first evening when I did not have this extra drink of water), and 2. I perk right up for the rest of the afternoon. I've got more energy than when I drink a cup of coffee.
