Just saw on the morning news that we are having a Measles outbreak. I had it when I was in second grade, also the mumps, chickenpox, and rubella. My last doctor visit she told me I needed to be vaccinated for the measles. I laughed, updated her and said I think I will take my chances.
Trip to town today for Post Office, rum for DH, and fruit for me if I remember. Not sure if DH is coming with me, he has been grumpy all week. The usual that happens when I’m planning on taking a trip. If he starts complaining about the trip, I just remind him that he said I could before I even asked him. Quiets him down pretty quick.
Temp got up to 105 F/40.5C so summer has started, right on time for Memorial Day. We have had schools here for outings 3 days in a row. This is the last week of school in this area. The busy season has begun!
A friend sent me this yesterday and I thought you all would like it.
Thought for today:
What do you call a fish with a crown?
A king fish!

Hey, kids,
Heather - that porch looks completely spiffy! Love it.
Allie - Sounds like you got some sleep, hope so. How are your fatigue levels these days - with that much weight gone, I hope that you are able to get through the day without being so exhausted…
Beth - I'm watching my weight creep back up, and the same thought crossed my mind. Trying to sweep that off in the margins with other bad ideas! 😀
So, of course, since I'm thinking about gaining a bit of weight lately, I spent the morning making meatballs. I'm edging back into frugal cooking, if you're looking for ideas:
I only buy ground beef here from Aldi's, and end up getting three pound packs as they're cheaper than anywhere else by the pound and higher quality meat.
However, it's far more beef than we can or should eat in a week - so I took the remainder that was unused after burgers last night, added a half pound of ground pork and made half into Italian meatballs and half what I call NIMs - non-Italian meatballs made using onion soup mix. And I threw into the overall mix before I split it about 4 ounces of ground up fresh brown mushrooms, two eggs and panko breadcrumbs.
I sauteed the rest of the mushrooms for an omelet after my labors - it was good, too.
The NIMs are good in various dishes, from Chinese to Mexican. Very versatile. I like the taste of onion, just not the reality of them. The texture of both raw and cooked onions grosses me out - but dried onions bother me not at all.
I make the meatballs small (I eat one or one and a half, Corey eats six) so overall, it makes eight meals for us all told - it's a pretty good, frugal stretch, lots of iron and protein for me, and I freeze them after I bake them off, of course. Super easy to pull out, throw in a sauce, make some pasta or potato or rice, a veg for him, and dinner's ready. And all to our taste, no one elses.
Eight meals averages just under $1.50 per individual meal, even with pasta or rice or potatoes and veggies added into the end cost. Considering that our very rare breakfast out after the colonoscopy cost us $40 with tip, I'm pretty happy with a meal for two that costs a total of $3 these days.
According to how you make them, the meatballs end up being approximately 100 calories apiece or less. Mileage varies! 😜
Now that I've eaten my mushroom omelet, I'm off outside to weed my one flowerbed that the crabgrass or whatever it's called climbs up on and tries to take over every spring.
Hope it's a grand day for all…
Love from cloudy, but dry until tonight (supposedly), Arkansas,

Wow! The UTI finally got revved up, so I was back to the doctors. I didn't want to be left with it during a bank holiday weekend! Saw a sweet young woman, who prescribed me a week of strong antibiotics to get this recurrence under control. I suggested oestrogen pessaries to help, as I had them years ago during my breast cancer treatment. She has prescribed them as well. So, I hope I am set for a while. It is so frustrating and annoying.
This morning started out well, with me moving knickers, socks, and pyjamas out of what is now John's room, and into mine. I found a place for them. The beautiful dresses I took to the charity shop. Hooray! I also threw a big bagful of underwear in the bin. Good feeling. Now I only have what is comfortable, what looks nice, and what I will wear.
Dinner is mashed cauliflower, fried apple slices, and black pudding.

One of these days I will try the cottage cheese internet thing. You place cottage cheese on parchment paper spreading it thin. Sprinkle mozzarella or which ever cheese you want, with "everything" sprinkles. Bake until its bubbly and a bit brown. Then peel it slowly off the parchment and use as the tortilla for a wrap sandwich.😁💖

Ssslugs! In the mini-greenhouse. Tiny one in pot of poppy seedlings, medium sized one going up the wall. [shudder] Maybe they were drawn by the warm, humid environment but how do they know to get up the deck and under the plastic? Yuck!!!
Kay bless you and bless you and bless you. Lavender/Possum looks like a sweetie. Does she play dead? Are her legs short? She might have some of my favorite Skye Terrier in her. Look forward to the after pictures. Ah I see she’ll stay in familiar territory, but hope you will visit her frequently. Leash training is not an overnight phenomenon…
Lisa/Machka/Heather code switching. Not consciously but as I’m phonemically weak it happens. Traveled to Chicago with friends, then flew to Maine for a two week visit. When I rejoined the friends, they could not understand me when I asked them to get the caht. WHAT??? The CAHT! The CAHT! The grocery CAHT!!! Oops. Lisa that lisp might be a symptom of the same…
Barbie loved the history of your dogs’ naughtinesses through the years. Did your spiritual practice help you come to that realization?
Flea what a horror! In what universe could a stepfather think that was ok? Can NOT understand. Needed learning about Peter and the Starcatcher(s) as an antidote, thanks! Was unfamiliar and surprised to learn that the humorist Dave Barry co-authored the children’s novel. Will look for it in my library, both the books and perhaps the play.
Friday, T & D joined me and the guests down the creekside path to Whaleshead beach early enough to enjoy low tide and before the wind came up too strong. The touring sticks T gave me came in handy as the path was a little muddy and slippery in spots. Then guests wanted to lunch somewhere with a fantastic ocean view so we drove to Port Orford and lunched at Redfish. K wanted more so she drove us to Bandon where we wandered around the Old Town piers. Wasn’t so much the steps (~7500) as the sitting in back seat of a rough riding Ford Escape that really wiped me out. Stiff!
Through pg 15.

Hey, kids,
Three hours work, once I got done with making meatballs early - but worth it. I hopefully have finally gotten rid of the ugliest lily EVER, with leaves that were too long and too heavy for itself, always broken in the middle and looking ragged. It regenerated from tiny bits of bulb over and over - I moved them into this bed from a different one the first year we lived here, and after I catered to them for one full season, I decided they should be terminated with extreme prejudice. Zombie lilies every year since. We'll see if I got the whole growth this time. Doubtful.
The leaves you do see in front of the shrub are just the hydrangeas that came back just fine, but in the middle of a mess of weeds. I just planted a number of other hydrangeas, will see if I can get them happy and ready to bloom by next spring.
What you can't really see is that behind the small bush (a blueberry shrub) is an Eastern redbud tree about three feet high that volunteered there. Probably seeded by the wind from the neighbor's tree, which was absolutely beautiful until the electric people turned it into a Dr. Seuss tree. I was able to winkle this one out and have put it in a pot with some good soil—if it survives, it will be the first tree we plant at the nearly-gone-now little house.
The only weeds I couldn't get to were the ones too wound into the morning glories - after I accidentally pulled the second young morning glory vine, I decided they can stay weedy. They don't seem to care, and I'll be able to clean them out in the late summer after the morning glories die back.
Got about four projects in the house I want to play with, but feeling back to my usual self. Lunch was a wafflemaker grilled cheese. Figured out long ago that textures can replace calories like butter on the outside of bread. I just throw two pieces of bread in there with a piece of cheese in between them. Yummy, crunchy in places, toasted in others, melty cheese. You don't miss the butter that way.
Later, babies,
Love y'all,

First hubby is alive and well, and still my best friend. We have known each other since I was in 7th grade.
What happened was one day he walked in the room and announced he didn't want to be married anymore and left the next morning- No warning at all. I had no idea why. I didn't find out for 20 YEARS!!! He was just gone. On my birthday I got a friend request from him -He said Happy birthday, he was sorry for all the pain he caused and explained why he left. He had mental issues that he was NOT dealing with but hid them from me. He was worried he had inherited bi-polar from his mother. He had been having anger problems that were excellating -yes he threw things at me-hit me with a vase once, cussed at me, etc. He was so afraid of hurting me so he left before that happened.
Current dh and I had been married 18 yrs by that time.
He didn't want to break up my marriage even though the feelings were still there(and still are) so, when his second wife passed away from cancer, he quickly found a third and married her.
He says all the time that leaving me was the biggest mistake he has ever made. I was ready to give him a second chance but before we could, he made the choice to find someone else
We talk every night. I still talk to his dad and stay in touch with both of his brothers.
A few years ago, before dementia got bad with his mom, I got to take her out shopping. Her favorite thing and what we used to do when we would visit. She was a mom of 3 boys so loved clothes shopping with me.8 -

The view from my front porch of the little house today - all that's left is the concrete front stoop and the bare dirt where the pier and beam foundation of the house was constructed - badly (long story). The stoop will be removed, as well, plus one more shed, which they'll haul off whole, and they'll put every bit of trash in the dumpster you can't really see at the right. We had that wooden fence constructed so we didn't have to look at the trashy little house and its equally sketchy occupants… and it obscured the view completely. I can finally see Corey's vision of the rolling lawn to come. The fence covered the gap you see now, and the house. All the wooden fence is coming down as well.
The mimosa in the foreground was about three feet tall seven years ago, just sprang up beside the entry gate. We dug it up and replanted it, using it to heal up the scar of one of the old burn piles we found everywhere, once we cleaned it up. It obviously liked it, it's 15 feet high now… Love this tree.
Naptime, I think… was up last night designing a compass rose needlepoint pattern. Because I can't help it, apparently… 😀 Egg liked the company.

Machka in Oz,
Great job on your medical numbers! You have worked hard and proof is in the pudding!
When I was packing for my sisters, I was trying on some summer shirts and they just felt too big! That's an interesting feeling. I have started a pike of clothes to give away.

I had my yearly mamogram today. The lady and I are good friends. The fact that we chatted the whole time, and she unconsciously was gentle moving things around, helped. She lived 8 years in Japan, has grown up in Oregon near John Day, we have oogles of subjects similarities to chat about.
I feel like always a meal behind! I have a drink from breakfast I am still working on, my Wasa crisp bread with havarti cheese and turkey I ate 1 and 1/2 of the 2 crackers. The edamame is a bust because I am full already. Still have some celery/T of dressing, 5 chicken nuggets and a container of yogurt to eat. It might be a 700 to 800 calorie day, just can't do it.

Barbie loved the history of your dogs’ naughtinesses through the years. Did your spiritual practice help you come to that realization?
😀 The short answer is yes. I live by spiritual principles that are a blending of many practices that I've read about, listened to, seen in action, or studied over the years. I am always looking for a solution for what ails me because feeling bad doesn't feel good.
😀 As I finished washing the third of eleven panels on my fence and pulling another five gallons of weeds, I marveled at reading about what others have accomplished. Another part of my day is riding my exercise bike, knitting, and watching TV while the dogs nap until someone walks down the street then they jump up, run to the door or window, and bark before going back to sleep.
😀 Lisa, what a great view.

I am trying to cook more at home- Eating out is so crazy expensive. DH likes to eat out all the time but even he is thinking about eating at home a bit more, most of the time.
We went out for lunch the other day. I got a simple power bowl, he got a burger- $50 before tip- we had heard about the place but never been there. Won't be going back.I LOVE the budget meals. Don't find the great deals on meats like we did even a few years ago but still can do it.
last night it was veggie curry- his request and it turned out great. Made plenty for us and a quart of leftover to drop off for son beings he has moved out completelytonight will be simple nachos- got a quart of Pace salsa for .98 today so it will be a cheap meal

When my seedlings just started in my green house, I was out "snail/slug hunting" with my flashlight every night a little after dark. After the greenhouse I would walk around the yard near the greenhouse. I added a line of salt around the greenhouse. It worked for a few weeks until we had a little rain. They did get a few plants- funny how they got the two cucumber plants in the very middle of the flat. Didn't touch any of the other 22 plants.

@mandyrosesews … Mandy, welcome here!
@dlfk202000 … Debbie, I do need to have my annual check for skin cancer soon. I'm actually slightly overdue for it.
On recliners … I've never found them comfortable. But then, I've only really tried enormous, puffy ones like the picture. I can't sit upright in them with my feet on the floor. I can't sit upright in them at all. And the pillow part behind the head is too far forward.
My chair is a wing chair with an ottoman, and a cushion for lumbar support.
On measles … I had measles when I was a child, then I had one dose of measles vax when I was a teenager.
In 2016, I got, what we can only assume was measles and when I did some reading, I found out that people in my age group should have had two doses of measles vax, not just one. In late 2019, I got my second dose of measles vax and in early 2020, I got the shingles vax. And then, of course, along came COVID and I've been having all sorts of vaccinations.
But the reason I opted to get the measles vax in 2019 was because I was so incredibly miserable with what we assume was measles in 2016. I was covered in a very itchy, painful rash from head to toe … every part of me. It was so bad that wearing clothes to go to the doctor was challenging, and I still remember the reaction of the doctors (I saw a couple as it got worse and worse) when I walked into their offices and said, "I've got a bit of a rash", then lifted my top. I've never heard doctors gasp before.
They ended up giving me strong allergy meds and strong painkillers which knocked me out for about 2 days until the rash began subsiding.
My skin has been super sensitive since then.
On gardening … I have a vision of what I'd like our front garden will look like, but progress is slow. Then I watched Better Homes and Gardens last week, and they toured someone's gorgeous garden but made the comment that it was amazing to have a garden so nice when it was still quite young … it was 12 years old. So I guess the chaos going on out front after 1 year isn't so bad.
I am admiring what many of you are doing.
On weight … I've lost 9.3 kg = 20.5 lbs since January. 😀
I wore pants yesterday that I thought might just fit, but they were baggy! Cool!
Not sure I will get exercise in today … it has been raining. We desperately need the rain, so I'm not disappointed in that.

Well done on the weight loss, Machka!
I've found that I'm not as big as I thought I was, and last year's clothes still fit. I'm just naturally eating a bit less these days. I can't drink alcohol at the moment, because of the UTIs, so that's a silver lining. I haven't weighed myself since last August.
I absolutely hate taking antibiotics, because I have carefully cultivated my microbiome over the last few years. I hate killing off those precious good bacteria. They were my friends and I nurtured them. However, needs must. I have no choice. I will continue to eat well, and ply myself with helpful things when this is over. Let's hope it truly is over. Life is no fun when all your consciousness has moved to your nether regions!
It's raining! 😃 Very much needed and wanted. We have had the driest, sunniest spring on record. Endless days of blue sky. Very bad for the farmers. Of course, we all say, it's a bank holiday, so it's raining!☺️
Tonight we are going to a Big Band Swing Concert in Brighton with the family. It's a kind of birthday treat for Max. You can, apparently, dance in the aisles, if you feel like it. Next week, for half term, they are off to the Isle of Wight, a small island off the south coast of England. They are renting a house with DDIL's parents. Shame about the weather! We are having the girls for lunch and a playdate on the Monday of the following week, as the school has a teacher training day. Called an 'inset' day.
Lisa - So happy for you, nearing the end with clearing that nightmare house. I know it cost you a pretty penny, but it must be such a load off your mind. Nothing worse than terrible neighbours.
So, more rationalising of my bedroom space today. Because my bathroom is upstairs, it's more complicated than normal. Also, a lot of my clothes are next door in John's room, which was our bedroom. I have to decide what I really need in here, and what I can keep elsewhere, without too much inconvenience. I do use the bathroom on this level at night. I feel a bit disjointed at the moment. I really need another cupboard, but can't decide whether to bring one in from John's room, or buy a new one. The alcove is very shallow.
Love to all. Heather UK xxxxxxxx

Hooray! Tidied up and rationalised my wardrobe and shoe rack. ( I have very few shoes) Threw away a few hiking socks, as I don't go on many hikes these days, and moved some rarely worn stuff, like fleeces, into John's room. The wardrobe looks so much better! Especially the cloth hanging shelves at the side, which were a muddle. Much better now. Bags and scarves. I don't need things I wear once a year taking up space. Still could move some cruisewear out. Inspiring myself! 🤩 The things I wear everyday should be front and centre. More to do! It was the other way round when I was in 'our' bedroom, but they've just stayed there.🙄

I have to say, John has one of the wardrobes in here, for the same reason. This was the spare, or guest room.

Heather: I rationalise my wardrobes twice a year when I swap winter/summer clothes. I like my current clothes easy to see, so they are hung by colour. I have a divider which lets me know which clothes I haven’t worn in a season, so they are candidates for the donation bag.
Well done on the weight loss, Machka. We were hoping for rain yesterday, as the garden is parched. There was very little, and what there was was very light.
With the Bank Holiday Monday, we have a 3 day weekend aged, plus Tuesday and Wednesday free. It’s bound to rain then 😝

Heather - I got an overdoor hanging thing that has six compartments, kind of like the picture. I get dressed in the bathroom every morning, so I use the bottom three for pajamas, clean undies and socks, etc.
The others are used for other bathroom things. I fastened it directly to the door because I hate it when things flap, which it did every time you closed the door. I just inserted screws in the middle down the whole length. Added tons of space to my bathroom cabinets as well as my dresser drawers.

Morning, all, and congratulations to all our ladies who are losing weight - you're encouraging me to get it back together once more. Been on kind of a tear of late, and just need to find my sense of control and purpose again.
Was startled awake at 4:15 by a thunder boomer that sounded like lightning struck right next to the house. It might have, it's still dark, can't tell. Lay in bed for a bit counting between the flashes and the bangs, as they played tag through the nearby hills and valleys of this green countryside… and finally hoisted myself out to get going with my day.
Feel more myself than I have in a week, the gut ache from all the biopsies taken from the colon has finally faded, and my sense of taste has returned. Also my ability to gain weight by looking at food, unfortunately!😜
These procedures always reset my biome, much like your antibiotics, Heather. Been taking probiotic or eating a small yogurt each night before bed to try to get things restarted with beneficial bacteria rather than the bad guys. So far it seems to be doing OK.
For the moment, the washer and the dishwasher have taken the place of the rain sounds. This system is moving from west to east, like most this time of year, and as you can see by the little round yellow dot on the Arkansas/Oklahoma border, we're literally in the eye of a storm at the moment… 😲 I really do love storms… which is a good thing. Each of those little jaggedy things is a lightning strike, so this one's chaotic and large… and that mess to the north and west of us is growing from a thin band of storms to a big mass, the leading edge of which will hit us in an hour and a half or two.
I love the Internet. I know how chaotic and stressful the world is for so many at the moment, but I just marvel at how much we never knew existed when I was first learning about the world, and how much I have at my fingertips now. I was born at the right time, in the right place, to be able to remain truly awed at what we are capable of now.
Later y'all,
Lisa in the middle of all that… 😀🐈⬛🤷🏻♀️😉10 -
💻️ I love the internet too!
