Might be a stupid question... but...

I was wondering, if you stay in your calorie goal & you exercise every day, will you still lose weight if you're eating crap foods?

Edit:
My food diary for today would be a perfect example of what I mean. I do NOT eat like this every day. But I was just curious.

In the beginning yes, when you have a small amount to lose, like in the last 20lbs range, its probably harder to lose, but still possible I'd assume.

Theoretically, one would imagine yes but, would you be healthy?!? There's also a saying that you can't out-train a bad diet!

You can... it's called the twinkie diet. This guy ate twinkies for a whole year or something like that, and he lost weight... was he very healthy at the end of it? No.

You can eat the crap and healthy stuff.. but the trick is to eat more healthy then crappy. I personally plan all my meals the night before and then tweak as the day goes on.. but it saves me from eating junk just because I can.

She is right..... Try to eat a little healthier and the weight will be easier to lose and then use junk food as a once in awhile reward. You will feel SO much better.

Yes, as long as you have a calorie deficit you'll lose. Health is the consideration for eating better foods. Losing weight by eating crappy foods will not make you any healthier(aside from benefits of not being overweight).

Weight loss is cals in vs cals out so. It should. There was a study some professor did where he only ate twinkies for a month but stayed under certain amount of cals. He lost weight.

The two issues I see with your diary is no water consumption (or if you are like me, none recorded atleast :), and the excess sugar you intake will most likely be turned to fat once it is processed through your body.
  • theres tons more calories in junk food so you cant eat much to stay in your goal range. you would feel really hungry not to mention the nutritional deficit you would create. but ya you would lose weight you would just feel like what you eat! lol

You could lose weight but it would be safe to assume that you would be losing more muscle with the fat, which will lower your metabolism in the long run. Try treating your body like an athlete. If you are going to spend the time exercising and getting fit why not feed it healthy as well??? I drive an older Ford pick-up truck. It's a work horse but nothing pretty. I put regular gas in it and it runs just fine. My son, however, has a very nice BMW sports car. It only takes premium gas. My analogy is, what would I prefer to be: an old work horse or a sleek sports car? My answer is sleek sports car so I'll feed my body premium fuel!

I don't log my water, but I do drink it =)
I don't eat like this every day. Just had a bad day =P It just made me curious, if a random day here or there like this would hurt me in the long run.
  • technically its possible to lose weight doing something akin to the twinkie diet. No, its not super healthy. I have the same difficulty and what I suggest is something difficult but simple. Eat more of the healthy foods. Whole grains, lean proteins, fresh fruits and vegetables, should help keep you full and away from sweets and junk food. Now the thing here is that you need to eat enough of them. See like today you only had 1000cals but worked out too. To stay away from sugar you probably should eat more.

I'm not saying I do this well, but I'm not perfect. Best of Luck!

I do not eat "clean". I eat "junk food" often. Today I had a real hotdog on a white bun for dinner (and apple sliced, I was eating with toddlers only). I eat healthy-ish most of the time. It hasn't seemed to effect my weight loss.

When it's only an occasional day it may actually help - consider it a carb-loading/re-feed day. The variety might help prevent your body considering 'starvation mode'.

    Can you define crap food?

The carbs and sugar in junk food tend to make you crave more of the same and keep you hungry all of the time, so it is much more difficult, mentally, to lose weight while eating a lot of carbs and sugar.
