If I do this, what should I get? Whey isolate? I need more protein (a lot) and fewer carbs (a lot).

Any recommendations?

Thanks for your advice?

Pulses are great, or tofu if you like it. Egg white and milk too. Decrease stuff with really high carbs like white rice etc

Luckily, as a post op Baratric patient, rice is one of the things I can not eat.

If you want RTD (ready to drink), then get the Premier Protein drinks at Costco. They are 30g of protein to 5g of carbs (and only 1g of sugar). They are about $24 for a box of 18.

If you prefer powder & make your own shake at home (much less expensive in the long run), then get a Blender Ball cup, and then buy Champion Whey Stack. It blends VERY well, and has great flavor. So far I've tried Chocolate, Strawberry, Vanilla, Banana Cream and Cookies & Cream, and liked all of them. They are 24-30g of protein per scoop with 1.5-5g of carbs.

The other protein powder you want is Any Whey by Optimum Nutrition. Look for the one that says "Optimized for Baking" - you can put this in things like breads, muffins, cakes, soups, and even mashed potatoes. For me, this is a compromise when I'm making a 'carb-heavy' dish, so that I can at least increase the protein count of that dish. In theory, it's Vanilla flavor, but really - it's somewhere between tasteless and 'whey' flavored. In *most* dishes, I can't tell it's there.

If you prefer protein bars, the absolute best tasting ones to me are Power Crunch bars in Wild Berry, French Vanilla or Peanut Butter Creme. Unlike many traditional protein bars that are a cross between a snickers bar & a granola bar in texture, these are VERY light. They are like sugar wafers or Nutty Buddy bars (in texture). They typically have 14g of protein and 10-11g of carbs in each one.

I'm post-bariatric too - I had the Duodenal Switch. Which one did you have?

Ah, as a Bander, you will especially like the Power Crunch Bars because won't have to worry about them getting stuck. Have you already reached the sweet spot , or are you still adjusting the amount of restriction you have?

I like them after a workout when I need *some* carbs to replenish my body. I buy them at Vitacost.com but a couple of people recently have told me they found them at Wal-Mart and The Vitamin Shoppe.

I actually reached the sweet spot in Summer 2008. Since I have inexplicably re-gain 100 pounds.

What do you think has caused your regain? Are you eating high calorie liquids? Do you think you have stretched out your stomach or esophagus to accommodate a larger quantity of food? Do you feel that your metabolism slowed down to compensate? Do you think the band has slipped or developed a leak? Are you following the principles of a small poucn (band or RNY) by water loading between meals?

Have you ever done The Cottage Cheese test to see how much room you have in the upper reservoir above the band?

  • Actual food is going to be more beneficial than supps IMO, but its really personal preference. If you want protein from supps just go with ON gold standard whey, it has the least amount of fillers in comparison to other supps.

Whey is quick and easy, but if you want actual food, tuna is awesome, nonfat greek yogurt is good too.
  • I love the Nutralife Bodyshape protein shake. It has like 2grams of carbs and a massive protein hit. And the taste is actually bearable.
