30DS with shin splints: alternative cardio?

Hi guys, I wonder if you could help me out. I know a ton of people on here have done the 30DS so I thought you could shed some light on my problem. I've recently developed shin splints because I've been running a lot while training for a couple of 10Ks. I have also recently started the 30DS (on Day3 of Level 1) and am loving it but finding the jumping jacks, etc quite hard on my shins. The only truly low impact option in level one is the punches. Does anyone have any ideas for some low impact cardio that I can do during the 30second-1min slots?

Thanks guys!

Step exercises are good, fairly low impact but can get your heart rate going.

Try googling if you don't have much luck on here! Some great websites out there!
  • squats, lunges??? personally, I stole some of the moves from her yoga hell .. I mean yoga Meltdown workout.

No jumping for me either because of shin splints.

I know this sounds weird but icy hot on my shins always made them feel better when I got shin splints. and a little ibprofen....

Presuming you want to stick with videos rather than go to the gym to use the machines, do circuits etc, you could try her "Banish Fat Boost Metabolism" DVD - that's all weights but is fast-paced enough to have cardio benefits. Similarly her "Yoga Meltdown" video, while not pure Yoga, is very low impact and for me anyway, got my heart rate up into the "walking slightly uphill at 4mph" range - almost 80% of my max heart rate at times. They may be good alternatives or, as someone else has suggested, you could swipe some moves from those and put them in 30DS until you're feeling better.

Do step-jacks. Step out to one side and raise your arms then step together lowering your arms. Repeat to the other side. Seemples!

Hey, thanks guys! The step-jacks sound good. Now that I'm on level 2 there are some good alternatives as well, the plank jacks don't hurt my shins (well, no more than the rest of my body!)

JamesBurkes - I do weight train at the gym as well, I have a trainer that I see once a week and have a programme that I follow most of the time but 30DS is perfect for days when I can't get to the gym - I think it will be great come winter when the car starts getting snowed in a.gain! Not too many of her DVDs are available here in the UK unfortunately! Thanks for the advice guys
