Don't really know what i kept mine at really, but all i know is i recently burnt my bands out that help control resistance. Now the thing is like pedaling a bike that has no chain. Ugh.

I love my elliptical. So much less impact than running either on a treadmill or outside (and I do run outside occasionally). If I want to sweat & feel the burn I usually try to keep the resistance at a 7 or 8 and get between 140 to 150 strides per minute. This is on a gym style, sturdy Precor elliptical. I don't like any that have moving handle bars because I like to keep my hands free.

Oh and given the intensity, I usually aim to workout no more than 30 minutes. I'm not a huge fan of the hours long cardio workouts. I just want to get in and get it done and move on.

I hated it in the beginning but love it now! I do 40 minutes max at a time. Since my knee injury, this and the stationary bike are the best exercises. Now the bike, I hate! I do the 'cardio burn' option on the elliptical and boy do I sweat.

i like my one at home but the one at the gym kills me.

If you dont want to do long periods on it why dont you think about interval training on it - same benefits in way less time.

I only use it for warming up or post weights, im a runner and am far more happy on a treadmill.
Was just curious how other people managed to last so long on them.

I love elliptical. It's easy on my joints. I either watch TV (only time I watch, I don't have cable). I also close my eyes and I feel like I am walking on air. :flowerforyou:

I used to hate them, but I am learning to like the one at the gym alright. I keep my resistance low (5 or 6), and try for no more than 40 minutes at a time. I don't do any other cardio (except maybe the bike) on the days I do the elliptical, just some strength.
  • The elliptical is supposed to be amazing because it's such low impact, but it kills my knees. After about 30 seconds it just really hurts my knees so I can't do it. My trainer insisted I do it, too, because it's supposed to be so awesome but I just can't.
