Help!

I have a ripped knee and a massive DVT in my leg, but I HAVE to reduce my weight asap before I blow out my other knee. What exercises can I do to have the most impact without using my legs? :(

Given your situation, I would ask your doctor for a referral to a physical thearpist so the can determine what would be safe for you to do.

    Good luck

I second the physical therapist recommendation.

If your goal is weight loss, I'd observe that exercise is optional for that, so you can hold off on doing it if it's too risky or painful. Weight loss can be accomplished entirely on the eating side of the equation if necessary.

There are chair exercise videos on YouTube that don't use legs. With your doctor's approval you might be able to do some form of pool exercise, since the water supports much of body weight.

But a referral to physical therapy would be a good starting point, to avoid further injury. The therapist can help you identify safe exercises you can do.

Yeah, weight loss is about getting the food under control. Exercise is a minor part of losing weight, unless you have limitless time and are willing to do a lot of exercise. I'm guessing that if you have significant weight to lose that food is the problem.

It's a big task if you have a lot of weight to lose, but it's worth it. You're worth it.

I'd say ask for a referral to a Dietician - that's where you'll get help with food.

For now, log everything you eat and study your food diary. Big changes, but if not now, when?

I saw an interview with a woman in the UK who lost 100 lbs in a year and a few months. The only thing she changed was dropping her soda habit.

So maybe look at your diet and figure out what you can let go of or find a substitute for. I stopped drinking Dr. Pepper back in Jan. and replaced it with Doc Pop, for ex. Or if you eat lots of chips or ice cream while watching TV, separate those two activities: eat the ice cream, then watch your show but not both at the same time. That will help your mind register that you've eaten.

Another idea: relocate your favorite snacks so they are harder to access. We keep chips in a closet inside our garage instead of in the kitchen. Or store your fav chocolate in the fridge instead of out on the counter. You still eat the treats, but make it more work for yourself.

A lot of people limit sugar by not bringing it home in the first place, so ice cream becomes something you only buy one serving of at a time.

Or start a healthy habit: one big glass of water first thing every morning and with each meal.

Best exercises for weight loss: Fork Put-Downs, Plate Push-Aways, Spoon Drops… (being funny but you get the picture).

Weight loss is about eating less than your body burns, you do NOT need exercise to accomplish that. You eat less to lose weight, exercise for the health benefits. The two are not required to be done simultaneously.

Now, that being said, without the additional calorie burn from some exercise you'll have to be pretty religious and try to be as exact as possible with your tracking, weighing, measuring, and logging, but you can still 100% accomplish your weight loss goal without the addition of exercise!

Controlling your eating and getting into a calorie deficit is more important right now. We don’t burn as many calories as we might imagine / estimate exercising. You should add exercise later when it’s more realistic - not just to burn some calories but for all the other incredible benefits including staving off dementia, heart health, and lengthening our lives! But for now, get really good at counting calories!
