I love a good swim. It helps me tune out the world for a while.

Any exercise is good for weight loss. Swimming vs. Running: it certainly doesn't burn as many calories as running, but if you swim more consistently than you run, then it only makes sense to keep it up!

I think it depends on your physical level when it comes to swimming - I can push myself farther in the pool than I ever could on land, so for me, swimming is a better workout. It's individual, I believe. It's much easier on your joints than running, which is why I stick to swimming as my main form of exercise.
  • I can't speak to its superiority over running but I do know that there is a certain zone I get into almost always when I swim compared to when I run. Maybe it's the water shutting out the world or something. Love it.

I have a bad ankle so I don't run very well - I can actually burn more cals in the pool in the same amount of time than I can on the treadmill. It's a great full-body workout, IMO.

From past experience, I've lost weight using only swimming as exercise (5x/wk) and noticed a difference in my waist measurement after just a week.

Swimming is a great workout. I swim with my kid's peditrician once a week and we get a great swim in! It's so much easier on my joints than running!! :)

Agree completely with the above posts. Also, if you can cross-train IE run, bike, row etc, combine that with swimming for the best weight loss and muscle building. Our bodies adapt very well so if you're swimming lengths and that's all you're doing, you will adapt and burn fewer calories in a given period. You can overcome this through varying the workouts, doing intervals, kickboard, finger drags etc.

    Swimming rocks! I love it
Having said that I also love running
    (and cycling)
they each have their own unique quality which really appeals to me. I agree with the water shutting the world out that someone else made, it so does!

I'm not sure about calories burned swimming vrs running, all I know is that I can get a damn good work out from either and its probably more important to choose something which you enjoy and maintain as a form of exercise than worrying about what burns the most.

Hope that helps and enjoy the swimming!
