LESS Alcohol ~ August 2025 ~ One Day at A Time

@Alatariel75 and @itlaydee thanks for sharing. I think you’re both on to something about where we are mentally when it comes to our ability to moderate or not. I know that when I am stressed and overwhelmed or depressed, I stop logging my food, exercising consistently and definitely the drinking more *kitten* it gene kicks in. Not to blackout or anything, but I’ll have that 2nd glass without batting an eye!
@NonnieDoiron hahahaha! One glass of wine tonight at work, and that’s it. Exercises today and feel much better than yesterday. Off to bed. G’nite all!

AF-19Another day down. It’s been a week of thorough audits, and my eyes and head hurt from staring at computer screens and deciphering numbers for hours on end.
I’m ready for the weekend. Although I’m not sure why. I’m not particularly looking forward to cleaning bathrooms. I wish I could hire a maid sometimes.

@Michieb125, thanks for your supportive comments re my depression. It's the sort that runs in families, so I've been dealing with it, up and down for over 20 years, maybe even before I was diagnosed. The alcohol never really helps, but it works faster and more predictably than anti-depressants on a bad day. But I've always known that it sabotages my mental health. As is probably true for most of us, we know what we ought to do, but if it were easy to change, it wouldn't be a struggle.
@NonnieDoiron, I'm reasonably fit and retired, and I still don't want to clean bathrooms. Been there, done that.😕 I hope Friday is an easier work day for you.
2 -
@nbruns83 I have been battling mental health issues, more anxiety but with periods of depression, for basically my whole teen/adult life too, and I know exactly what you mean about the alcohol working faster, but I've had to get really real with myself of late and also accept (dammit, kicks rocks) that it makes it worse, too. When I'm drinking, it's better, but not even enough to give me a hangover these days will make me more emotional, anxious, down, and less motivated the next day. Turns out that not drinking, eating healthy, and getting exercise and sun DOES actually help, dammit. Ugh.
5 -
@NonnieDoiron nobody looks forward to cleaning-and the way you sterilize your bathrooms is a lot more time and effort!!!! Yes, I’d love a maid too. I have the next best thing-a broke student that needs money. He does a great job too!
@nbruns83 and @Alatariel75 sorry to hear you guys go through depressive states. Dealing with mental health issues is absolutely no fun, and the energy required to do the healthy things we know works is enormous. I can totally relate, and you’re not alone in your struggle. And yep, reaching for alcohol is much easier, it relaxes us, and we can have an escape for a little while. Plus that dopamine hit of that first sip is up there with the first sip of coffee. Hugs all around!!4 -

Happy Friday LA friends:
Getting outside this am for a long walk before it heats up again!
My ritual drink tonight will be a NA Key Lime Margarita by Mingle, a woman owned company. The flavor is so refreshing on a hot summer evening.
Looking at my last two weeks I see I where I can do better. Planning 2/3 AF days over the weekend and can still enjoy a nice dinner and wine tomorrow.

AF-20Magic bottle of wine did not appear this week. The magician must have pulled to ultimate magic trick and disappeared. However, the potato chip fairy has taken his place!😡 That is one b i t c h I don’t need in my house! I saw the chips, walked over to my husband and asked, “when did you stop loving me?” He looked at me shocked and asked what I meant. All I said back was, “Chips! Diet!” And he laughed at me. Jerk!
Anyway, up at 3:30 this morning. Thank you, Bladder! I’m tired. Going to lay down and doom scroll until I fall asleep.

Hi everyone,
HAPPY WEEKEND! Yes, I did reset my count once again, but this time it's urgent. I've been having pancreatitis, which can become quite serious and is rather painful. My blood pressure has not yet come back down, but today is only Day 2. I feel like I've (finally) been "SCARED SOBER"!
I think i have a better shot at this now, due to the health detriment becoming increasingly more evident. It's also stalling my weight loss; so here I go!
Thanks so much to everyone wishing me a happy birthday!😊
Enjoy the days ahead!

@Alatariel75, Yeah, I chuckled at your commiseration. "Dammit" all those healthful behaviors do work, yet for me they don't turn into "good habits." It's always a struggle, and the imp on my shoulder 😈 is always whispering something tempting like, "Why don't you bake a sour cream coffee cake?" (No, I didn't. I ate an apple instead🍎. Sigh…
I hope as you all head into the weekend, you can stick with your healthy plans.

@Walela617 That's very scary. Pancreatitis is very serious and can be life threating. I assume you are under a doctor's care. So, please listen to their advice. Most of us think of alcohol just affecting our livers. But it also effects the pancreas, the spleen, our gastrointestinal systems, our hearts and blood pressure, and our brains.
I've also had medical problems from drinking. I had esophageal varices. Which is bleeding in your esophagus…also life threatening.
I've recently quit drinking (well only two days ago) and am already starting to feel better. I wish you the best and listen to your doctors.
Take care of yourself!
7 -
@Walela617 I'm seconding what @WestCoastGirl_7 has said, and not to freak you out but my husband ended up an insulin dependent diabetic because his pancreas failed due to multiple alcohol induced bouts of pancreatitis. Please take care of yourself, you have the best reason in the world - your health!!
8 -
@WestCoastGirl_7 I’m very happy for you that you’ve quit drinking. I know the 2 days probably hasn’t gone by without some struggle, but it definitely sounds like you have found your resolve and are on the way to healing.
@Walela617 please take care of yourself. Pancreatic illnesses are no joke!
Going to spend time with the female teenager today. Going to go get our hair done. To be honest, I worry about her a lot. She often behaves/dresses like a 12 year old boy. (She’s 15.) I keep telling myself she’s just a late bloomer, but I’m starting to think she’ll never bloom. Every now and then I get a glimmer of hope. Yesterday she actually put on eyeliner and lipstick! She doesn’t wear makeup, and I had to give her one of my unused lipsticks which was completely fine with me. I have to force her to wear dresses. We have a deal that she must wear a dress twice a year as “a gift” to me at Christmas and Easter to church. Usually, it’s one of my dresses that she pairs with weird accessories and doc marten boots, but at least she looks like a girl for a couple hours. She’s not gay though she “tried” to be a couple years ago, but she realized it’s not really what she wants. She recently admitted to having had a boyfriend (broken up now) and a huge crush on Ryan Reynolds which explains why we’ve watched the Deadpool movies about 50 times this month alone. I would like to sit with her and watch some of his chick flicks, but she usually leaves the room when I’m watching those. I plan to ask her today if she’ll watch The Proposal with me. It’s so funny and has Betty White in it, and she thinks she’s hilarious. So, I might have a shot. Fingers crossed and prayers to God!

Happy Saturday. I hope everyone has great plans for today and if no plans, just enjoy the day. I’m sitting here waiting on a wood delivery. I’m very much a procrastinator…I finally got around to placing the order as the temperatures are changing and they are late. I guess they are procrastinators too!
My husband has been motivated to walk, so the last two days he’s walked with me, causes me to walk slower, but that’s ok. He’s doing 2 miles with me, without, well, less say not much complaining. He’s already asked about walking today!
@Michieb125 ~ did you get your long walk in yesterday?
Today is a planned A day. We are going out for an early dinner.
@Walela617 ~ Be careful and take care of yourself. Did you see a doctor? I was not familiar with the ailment but looking it up it does sound very serious!
@nbruns83 ~ you’ve got a great month going on. After vacation is always a struggle for me…but getting there!
@Westcoastgirl _7 ~ Congrats on 2 days down. It may not seem like a lot but every day is a step in the right direction!
@NonnieDoiron ~ You are on a mission, so chips would not be a good thing! Good luck with the female teenager! 😂. 15 is a tough age. I say just enjoy them (as much as they will let you)!
Happy Saturday!

I did walk yesterday @itladyee….it was almost 3 miles (but my DH and dog slow me down) so I tell him I must walk alone to actually get exercise! Today my body is telling me I need to take a break-super muscle fatigue from the BodyPump class on Thursday.
I’m happy with my 4 days of amped up exercise this week. I’m looking for a new Health app that will track my exercise and keep me motivated.

Congrats on 2 days AF @WestCoastGirl_7, such a great accomplishment! Best wishes on your path.

@NonnieDoiron Thanks! I'm still on my AF streak…3 days now. I haven't looked at the spreadsheet, but you've really been doing well this month.
I wouldn't worry about your 15 year old teenager. I'm 68 and married (to a man) and I still dress like a 12 year old boy 😁. To me, it's more comfortable. And, I have always been the outdoors athletic type. I can't imagine playing frisbee, fishing, or kayaking in a dress. When I was very young, my grandma had an Italian friend that lived a ways away from us. We would visit from time to time. Her son had kids about the age of my brother and I. One day, my dad insisted that I wear a dress. I put up a fit. You can't play in a dress!!! Guess who won? Well, I'll just say that I showed up not wearing a dress. And, I've never worn makeup. Oh, I tried a couple of times. But it just wasn't me.
When I was in my 20's, a few of my friends and I would go to dance clubs in SoCal. My friends would take hours getting ready. One of my friends once said to me, "We take hours to get ready. And, all the guys ask you to dance!". I think some guys just like the natural look. And, probably, others may not.
Anyways, don't worry about her. What's good for one person may not be right for another. BTW…I haven't worn a dress since my high school graduation 🙂

And, thank you @itladyee and @Michieb125! One day at a time!
PS everyone…we ended up adopting two new kitties (3 months old). I felt like it was too soon. But my brother (amongst others) said that we weren't replacing Tinker, but just adding to the family. I haven't had kittens for a long time. I've made a vet appointment to get them checked out and established. But I'm thinking I should have made an appointment with a psychiatrist instead 🤔 They can act pretty nutty at times!

AF-21Thanks for the perspective, @WestCoastGirl_7. I know she’s going to be fine. I was never a huge girlie-girl growing up. I’ve always preferred my jeans over dresses, but I wear dresses when appropriate. And, wearing makeup is reserved for date nights, but I still wear it. I was raised with an older and younger brother, so I was a pretty rough and tumble kinda girl. I even liked to play football with the guys through high school. Today was a good day with her though. We both got our hair done, and we have the same hairstyle now. She showed the stylist an inspo pic of a short hairstyle, but the stylist recommended a wolf cut instead. I showed her pictures, and she liked it. So, she got a wolf cut, and I liked it so much on her I got one too. It’s a lot of layers, but it’s light on my next which I like with the hot flashes. 😂 Then, we did end up watching The Proposal, and she thought it was funny especially the part when Betty White and Sandra Bullock were dancing around the fire.
It really bothers her when I use her slang terms, and I was joking around and said something followed by “no cap” (similar to “for real” or “honestly”). She freaked out, and I asked her why. She said it was weird. I told her that I was just trying to be relatable and maybe seem a little “cool” in her eyes, and she kept saying that I was cool but not to use her slang. So, I guess I’ll stop trying to be “the rizzler”,😉🤣🤣3 -
@NonnieDoiron That is so funny…I'm never around teenagers, so I have never heard the term "no cap". A few years back (before Covid), I was taking some courses at our local community college. I was one of the older students. But, there were quite a few older students. I currently live in a rural county is SW Oregon and a couple of the larger companies had closed down, so there were quite a few older students. Of course, there were still young students just out of high school. One day this kid in my class came up to me and said, "Sup?". I busted up laughing. It's funny how the slang changes. In the 80's or 90's it was the "Valley Girl" thing…"For sure, for sure!". When we were kids, we used to say everything was "Witchin" with a "B". (I didn't want to get kittened).
The wolf cut sounds interesting. I currently don't have a hairstylist. Mine was younger than me but she retired. So I've been bouncing around from salon to salon (and we don't have that many around here). I've actually been cutting my own hair when it gets too long (just the front perimeter). Anyways, I went to Supercuts last time. They had a real good stylist there a while back, but of course, she left. So, I had someone new. When I described how I had been cutting my hair she said, "Oh, kind of feathered or a wolf cut". I may have to go back to my old salon. It's kind of far and out of the way. But, I may have better luck there.

I have been AF every night I intended to be, and last night, knowing I was going to a comedy gig and was going to have a drink, I was proud to only have 2 over the evening, then come home, have a tea and go to bed. Stopping drinking is a bigger challenge for me than not drinking, so that's a huge victory!

Very cool. It’s kind of like jumping back on the horse after falling off … have fun.

@Walela617 I don’t know what you’ve previously tried in order to quit, but if you haven’t already I highly recommend reading some of the books on alcohol. I found most of the books listed at the beginning of this thread useful. For me personally, they helped me to see alcohol differently so that I didn’t have to rely on willpower.
With whichever way you decide to get there, I wish you well, I understand being stuck and thinking there is no other existence.
Today’s times look very different from where we were just a short while ago since health officials admitted there were no safe limits. I hope this knowledge will help our current generation and the next.7 -
@WestCoastGirl_7 I am deeply sorry for your loss. Happy to hear about your new baby kitties.
@Michieb125 been a Les Mills regular for 20 years. The music keeps me going. The one class that's been a regular is body pump.
Reading posts about obsession, well I think a bit of obsession gives us motivation so if it doesn't cause damage, it could be good to be obsessed about the right things.
Today I am going to body pump then a walk in an air conditioned mall probably followed by a nap and likely a netflix movie. I'll push cleaning to Monday and work on having a proper Sunday day of rest. No drinks today for sure.

Hi everyone, (Weight finally under 160 again!)
I just wanted to let you all know how much I appreciate your kind words and very good advice. Today I'm on Day 4 AF and my pancreas pain is improved today. I can still feel it, but it's decreasing to the point where it's still a "warning" but I can complete my daily activities. My next doctor appointment November 7, but I will go sooner if it gets worse. I hand no desire to drink alcohol. At all; so maybe this was the "rock bottom" wake-up call I needed?
Enjoy your day! 💞Carole
